Sinjen -> New BETA AAR's Please (ex: see Snigberts) (3/22/2002 3:42:21 AM)

Snigberts AAR's were great reading. I would love to see some more posted here. I am greatly anticipating this game along with my friends and would enjoy reading some more AAR's as we await the release.

Thx to all who have posted AAR's up to this point.

Joel Billings -> (3/22/2002 12:59:14 PM)

Here's the combat report from days 3-6 of the 4 Weeks of Hell scenario. I'm playing the Allies in a PBEM game. This scenario starts on Oct 22 1942 and lasts 28 days. It does not cover New Guinea operations, only those around Guadalcanal. We have fog of war on so the reports have some distortion built into them. The combat report is a text file recap of all major action during the previous turn (it doesn't capture all action, missing search planes attacking ships and subs while on search, coastwatcher reports, etc.).

As the Allies I elected to launch a pre-emptive land assault against the Japanese forces in Lunga (Henderson Field hex). The Japanese are fatigued and short of supplies. However, this does threaten to use up my precious supplies before I can get a convoy in to resupply my forces, and could shut down my air operations prematurely (supplies are generic). Of course with the constant IJN attempts to bombard my airfield that may not be a problem. I started the game by sending all PT boats to Guadalcanal, while I formed my 2 CV's, 2 BB's 4 CLAA's and some DD's into a carrier force and sent it northeast of Guadalcanal. I hoped this might intercept his bombardment forces form Truk or at least keep his carriers away from my surface forces. I sent a TF with 4 CA's 2 CL's and 9 DD's immediately to block any attempt to bombard Lunga, while I also assembled a large force of DD's to act as a follow up force. I sent oilers out to the southeast of Guadalcanal so I could keep forces at sea. My transports started loading cargo and troops for the resupply run. I also built up an airbase at Wunpuko (north Espiritu Santo), basing around 45 B-17's there to support my ground troops on Guadalcanal.
This is the results reported on October 24 and 25 (the pattern in the report is all night actions/all day actions/all night actions day 2/all day actions day 2):

So after the first 2 days of action, the Enterprise is knocked out of action, as is the Shokaku. Other carriers and BB's take some hits as well. US PT boats do an amazing job, getting 2 torps into the Yamato (followed later by a 1000 pound SBD delivered bomb), although they pay a heavy price in sunk PT's. A major bombardment of Henderson Field is averted, although planes losses on both sides appear to total near 100. I'm not sure, but I'm hoping I've made a dent in the Japanese battleship force, although a lot of those reported shell hits could be of the 20mm and/or 5" variety. As usual, Japanse torpedoes took a heavy toll from the USN cruiser force.
At this point I ordered the Hornet to cover the Enterprise while it tried to get away. More light surface forces were ordered up to cover the Allied transport force and defend against another Japanese attempt to bombard Lunga. New aircraft were rushed to Henderson Field, although it's too dangerous to overstuff the field with every plane I have.

The following is what happened on October 26 and 27:

The Enterprise took a beating. In case my opponent is reading this I don't want to give away too much, as with fog of war on, you don't always know about enemy ships sunk until up to as much as 60 days after they sink. Thus, I don't really know if I've sunk many of the ships I've pounded, and neither does he know for sure about many of mine. Let's just say we've both took a pounding. Somehow I have to manage to get my convoys into Lunga sometime in the next week or so, supported by enough surface ships to survive any attacks. I think I've chewed up his carriers pretty well, either damaging their flight decks or shooting down or damaging most of his bombers. It's his CA's and DD's at night that I really fear. That's all for now. Hope you enjoyed this.

Joel

Sinjen -> (3/23/2002 12:22:11 AM)

Wow, thx for the AAR Joel. It looks like your PT Boats held the line for quite awhile there. However, attrition in your PT boat fleet looks to have nearly wiped them out. Lets hope they did enough damage to those Japanese heavies to make up for their brave sacrifice.

I noticed towards the end after your PT fleet was wiped out that the Bombardment fleets were starting to get thru.

Hrmm ever consider stripping your BB's from the CV TF and sending them in supported by cruisers and destroyers at night to try and stop the Bombardment and japanese resupply?

Also something I did in the old QQP game, "WWII: Battles of the South Pacific" was to group my subs into wolfpacks. Is this possible in UV? If so perhaps having a wolfpack patrol there might net you some rewards.

Just some ideas, thanx again for posting Joel.

Sinjen -> (3/23/2002 12:29:15 AM)

One more thing..keep those AAR's coming. It is great reading and very enjoyable. They are greatly appreciated by those of us waiting for the game release.

Thx again for posting the AAR. Helps give some insight into the strategic and tactical possibilities.

Erik Rutins -> Missing Carriers... (3/23/2002 12:34:11 AM)

Those carriers indeed aren't there, which shouldn't be a surprise given the fact that it's long after Midway. We're playing the historical scenario "Four Weeks of Hell", which goes for a month starting on October 22nd, 1942.

... or perhaps that was a dig at the IJN, in which case we'll just have to see how you like the "No Midway" campaign scenario where all of them can show up in the South Pacific. :D

In any case, Joel and I have been PBEMing as part of the beta test and as you might expect he's an excellent player. This is my first time taking the Japanese against him and I have to say that his deployment of BBs and CLAAs in one very solid carrier TF has proven to be an excellent decision. While I made it through his CAP on that first round of attacks without suffering much damage, his effective flak accounted for plane after plane.

In our last PBEM, I sent Washington and South Dakota to Guadalcanal in separate TFs to conduct surface combat and bombardment. Both of them went to the bottom of Iron Bottom Sound thanks to multiple Long Lance hits and some chance encounters with the Yamato and the Musashi. Ouch.

Regards,

- Erik

Sinjen -> (3/23/2002 12:40:42 AM)

hrmm, perhaps those american BB's are more valuable in a AAA role with the carrier TF than as an addition to the surfice action force. If I remember correctly the American BB's could keep up with the carriers and had a great AAA rating. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, Erik or Joel, can you group your subs into wolfpak like groups and concentrate them in an area? Since you know enemy surface action and resupply fleets are coming there, this tactic might payoff.

Erik Rutins -> Yep... (3/23/2002 12:50:50 AM)

The BBs are quite speedy, close enough to the carriers and they carry very good complements of AA guns, particularly the 40mm Bofors. I had considered using them in that role, but decided against it. I think either way can be effective, but Joel's decision in this case almost certainly saved the Hornet from further damage.

You can certainly form wolfpacks and assign your subs to patrol, lay mines or transport. I'll post here the results from the next turn, where you can see that the badly wounded Enterprise met up with one of my subs on the way back to Noumea...

PO2 D.Minami of EII-1 Daitai scores kill number 3

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can see that while the Hiei and Kirishima TF did well, the Chokai's TF was absolutely savaged by the remaining Allied cruisers and destroyers. The SG Radar-equipped Helena in particular performed very well before being sent to the bottom by my follow-on force.

Since Joel is reading this, I can't comment on current and future operations that didn't show up here, but you it's a safe bet that the action will continue at least for the next two turns until one or both of us becomes a bit more cautious.

Regards,

- Erik

I noticed that it every so often it reports someone getting Kill #3 or dying or getting captured. Are these squadron leaders? What bearing does their kill count or capture\death have on the squadron or their individual abilities???

Thx again.

Joel Billings -> (3/23/2002 1:07:59 AM)

Give a medal to the skipper of the Swordfish. Not only did he get a torp into a transport off Guadalcanal, killing troops on board, but he then got 2 torpedo hits on an IJN DD. You can bet there are plenty of subs of both sides operating around Guadalcanal. I think I have around 15 on station.

Joel

Adnan Meshuggi -> PT-Boats (3/23/2002 8:34:24 PM)

Very intersting thing you wrote, go on !

But after reading your posts, i think you should change something with the pt-boats. Sure they have the chance to kill capital ships, but only with torpedos, the idea of ptīs sinking or damaging heavily a crusier or battleship with guns is strange and should be fixed. Also, the chance of stopping a task force with ptīs should be like a jackpot in lottery. Sure, ambushed and sleepy, a tf could suffer heavily from the torpedos of the ptīs, but not with 20/40 mm cannons....

also, wich kind of torpedos do they use ?
The german s-boats had the submarine torps (if i remember correct) so if this is similar to the american/japanese ptīs, they should have the same advantage/disadvantages of the toprs of that time.

An other question, you told us about the hits, but i think we should differ between big gun hits or huge explosions (after a critical hit) and the hits of a 40 mm cannon (well, i think it is really a difference if the washington will be hit by an 25mm flak gun or a 18,1 inch granade of the yamato....) Maybe this could be done, also, a "war record" ship by ship, like engagements, successes, shot down planes, sunk ships and so (with fog of war, this isnīt exactly, but well, you will love your successfull ships and hate your unlucky ships)

:cool:

Joel Billings -> (3/24/2002 1:14:11 AM)

I did not "stop" the TF with torpedoes. They still bombarded. I just got a few lucky hits. In the combat animations you can see reports of the type of shell that is hitting (too much info for combat report summary). I don't think all those 20mm and machinegun hits do much to most of the ships they hit. I did see a DD reported as sunk after hit many times in a PT action, but it might have been damaged going into the combat.

Joel

Sinjen -> (3/24/2002 1:40:34 AM)

Keep those AAR's coming, they are really giving us an insight into the fun waiting to be had playing this gem.

Too bad there isn't IP to IP play, but from the way you talk PBEM is pretty cool.

Joel Billings -> (3/26/2002 7:21:11 AM)

Well, coincidentally about 2 hours before I saw the email suggesting I move BB's into defend Lunga, I had sent off my save game doing just that. I couldn't admit to it immediately as I didn't want my opponent to know what I was doing. We've played about 6 more days since then and I can give a brief recap from my point of view. First, my force of 2BB 4CLAA and 5DD sailed in to Lunga and intercepted several TF's. The one I remember most is a group of 10 unescorted transports. Erik had 2 DD's in the hex left over from a previous battle and he hoped that this force would help block my surface group from getting at his transports. He also ordered 4 CA back to Lunga to protect the convoy. The CA's didn't get there in time and the 2 DD's could not protect the convoy. At the end of the action I think I had sunk just about every transport and DD at Lunga. Erik said I sank about 1/3 of a division with the transports.

At the same time my planes at Henderson Field were getting the occasional bomb hit on his carriers. The Enterprise was sunk by a submarine as it limped back to port, and the Hornet withdrew to Noumea with considerable damage. I just was notified that the Shokaku is sunk. His remaining carriers seem to have withdrawn, either due to damage or heavy air group losses, or both.

I was able to get two convoys into Guadalcanal so I now have more troops, engineers and aviation support units, as well as the much needed supplies. My land attack, suspended for 4 days due to a lack of supplies, has gone forward again and I've almost driven the Japanese force back to Tassafaronga. On the most recently completed turn, a major Japanese bombardment task force hit Guadalcanal again, but I've still got a large air force ready on Guadalcanal and they have been getting their licks in.

The scenario has another 12 days to go, but it looks like Henderson Field is secure.

Joel

Sinjen -> (3/26/2002 7:54:34 AM)

Sounds like you have the momentum. His transport fleet is probably going to take longer to replace than yours would. Taking down that transport fleet may be one of the most decisive actions in your campaign. From what you report it definetely kept him from reinforcing his ground forces, enabling you to make some ground.

Keep it coming, would love to hear from both of you as the campaign comes to a close.

Joel Billings -> (3/29/2002 2:44:40 PM)

Recent events in the 4 weeks of hell scenario PBEM game:

After refueling and rearming in Espiritu Santo, my BB/CLAA force returned to Guadalcanal in time to attack a transport group escorted by 1 CA and 2 DD. Most of this convoy was sunk with only minor damage to my force. After this a major Japanese bombardment force got in along with a 150 plane airstrike, destroying many planes and kocking out Henderson Field for a day.
The Japanese player snuck in the Zuikaku and Zuiho south of Guadalcanal hoping to intercept my shipping, however by this point Henderson Field was able to launch significant airstrikes and over the course of 2 days was able to score 4-5 bomb hits on the Japanese carriers. The Japanese carriers launched 40 bombers at my BB/CLAA force that was making it's third trip to Guadalcanal, but the steel curtain of flak prevented any bombs from hitting my ships, and about half of the attacking force was shot down. Right after this my force ran into a Japanese BB group moving into Ironbottom Sound. My now highly experienced crews were able to throw back the enemy force with only minor damage, while causing considerable damage to at least 1 BB and several DD's.
Subs have been particularly active on both sides, with several ships being hit. Cripples leaving the Guadalcanal area have been especially hard hit by the subs.
Here is the most recent combat summary (air operations on both sides were curtailed due to bad weather). The scenario ends on November 18.

Erik Rutins -> From the Japanese point of view... (3/29/2002 10:28:57 PM)

Here's a quick summary of the recent highlights from my side of the monitor...

The convoy loss was definitely decisive. I'd had a 1CA + 2CL + 5DD force guarding it since Rabaul. Unfortunately, the previous day's fighting around Lunga had caused heavy losses to this covering force (and to the US ships that attacked it). Afterwards, I had two operational DDs that I could leave there. That made me quite nervous, particularly when my scout planes noticed his BBs and CLAAs apparently returning without his carriers.

My carrier TFs were heading back to Rabaul, but at present were just a ways north of Guadalcanal. I detached four of my best cruisers and sent them down to protect the convoy at Guadalcanal. In my defense, in our previous game I'd lost both the South Dakota and the Washington while fighting Japanese CAs at night - multiple torpedo hits from Long Lances took both of those mighty ships down. I had every reason to believe that as long as my CAs made it there, they would be capable of causing enough pain to force the US force to turn back.

Unfortunately, here's where I failed my command check and miscalculated the distance they would travel. The CAs were still just short of Lunga when the US armada rolled in, bypassed my weak destroyer patrol and wreaked massive havoc among my large force of transports. It was perfect timing for Joel, since a turn earlier and a turn later my covering force was much stronger. It was also a bad error on my part that has certainly played a huge role in deciding this battle.

After that, I thought I'd ambush his force the next time up by positioning Zuikaku and Zuiho well to the southwest of Guadalcanal where they could launch strikes on his supply lines. Unfortunately, I miscalculated again and a few P-38 escorted strike found my carriers and gave them enough of a pounding that it was not prudent to remain. I still got off one large strike the next time his BB/CLAA force appeared, but the bastards shot down most of my planes without a single hit. :mad: grrr.

I'm hanging on at Tassafaronga, but Lunga is entirely under Joel's control now and I see history coming up behind me like a freight train saying "told ya so". :) I'm fairly sure that Joel pretty much has this one in the bag points-wise (unless I manage to sink a few large ships unanswered), but I'm still going to contest the airspace around Guadalcanal with my strong Zero/Betty/Nell force in Rabaul that has yet to be badly damaged. One of us will no doubt keep you posted as to the highlights.

Regards,

- Erik

The closer things get to Rabaul, the more dangerous things should get for the US forces if he is bold enough to take the fight to you.

I wouldn't give up...I've had nothing but light carriers left as the japanese in similiar situation with QQP's South pacwar game and managed to sink Yorktown and Hornet with a surface action group led by the Yamato. I slipped them behind a stormfront to get close, then raced in to intercept the American carrier TF under the cover of darkness.

Losing your transport fleet is probably killing your offensive abilities. This should be somewhat offset by the fact that your DD's and CL's can carry some troops and small amount of supplies via Tokyo express??? Wondering if japanese DD's and CL's can carry troop and small amount of supplies in UV???

This might be enough to hold onto what you have and hope for a decisive engagement to put victory and the initiative back into your hands.

corbulo -> (3/29/2002 10:54:06 PM)

When did american ships start using BOFORS AA guns? I read in "The War in the Pacific" that this made a big difference. As I can see in Joels' AA report it was before October 1942.

BTW I read in the same book that American SUbs only became truly effective in January 1944 with the advent of the Mark 18 torpedo.

wflarry -> (3/31/2002 2:37:27 PM)

How effective were U.S. subs in 1942?

For the most part the old school cautious captains were still at the helm. How many of these guys were aggressive enough to go after japanese naval task forces? If memory serves, Morton, Fluckey, O'kane and other younger, more aggresive skippers didn't get their subs till 43 or 44.

Were bad torpedoes an issue in 1942? I believe I read that most of the torps (Mark 10s?) on hand at the beginning of the war worked fairly well, as they were made slowly by master craftsman and had been overhauled and rebuilt many times by the Navy bureau of ordinance. It was the replacement, mass produced Mark 14 torps that gave U.S. subs trouble till the problems with faulty depth keeping and bad contact exploders were finally identified and corrected.

The Mark 18 had its own problems, one of which was a rudder that tended to jam causing it to run in circles. Several U.S. subs managed to sink themselves with their Mark 18s.

juliet7bravo -> (3/31/2002 3:43:11 PM)

Biggest problem with the torpedoes was the Mk. 6 detonator...the magnetic detonator bit didn't work period, and the contact detonator bit only worked about 10% of the time.

Mk 14 torpedo had numerous design flaws...worst was that it ran about 10' deep. The only semi- effective torpedo the US had was the Mk 10, used in the old R & S class pig boats. The Mk 15 was the torpedo used by surface ships, and wasn't that bad a torpedo (comparatively speaking)...but it also used the Mk. 6 detonator. The Mk 15 could also be used in fleet subs (but not S boats)...but had to be loaded into the tubes at dock (from outside?) because they were so long...couldn't be routined (maintenance) either while at sea. The Mk 15 didn't sink a single ship in 1942 because of the Mk 6 detonator...basically, US destroyers in '42 were just oversized gunboats outclassed by the Jp. Navy in almost every way, especially training and tactics.

Starting in '43, they started deactivating the magnetic detonator on all torpedoes, so people at least had SOME chance of their torpedoes going bang. Plus they started rebuilding the contact detonator with field modded firing pins machined from aircraft propellers. Set the depth 10' higher, disabled the magnetic detonator, rebuilt the contact detonator...and bam, they were in business.

How about that Mk 13 air-dropped torpedo? Had to be dropped at around 50'@100 knots airspeed, LOL, or it'd break apart...I think the stall speed for most US torp bombers was around 90 knots. Compare this to the Jp Navy air-dropped torps in use in the early war...good for 1000'+ feet and over 250 kots.

The Mk 18 didn't have a major problem with "circling", no more so than other torps (or not much)...the problem was that for some unknown reason, the Navy Dept. removed the "anti-circular run guard" off its rudders that were standard equipment on earlier torpedoes. Unfortunately, it took a while before someone survived a circular run and came back to explain what was occuring...I'm not certain, but they might not have figured it out until post-war, and some of the survivors who by some miracle survived both their subs sinking and the Jp. POW camp explained what happened...I think they were pretty pissed about it.

Can't believe the Navy never properly tested the torpedoes. Some admirals should have been tried and executed for treason over the entire fiasco. They spent most of '42 denying that there was even a problem

Can't really say that the early war skippers lacked agression in '42...how froggy you going to get when going into combat with weapons that you KNOW ain't gonna work except by divine intervention? The problems with the torps weren't exactly a secret within the submarine community. A large number of the subs in service in '42 were pretty much obsolete to boot. It was also a period when doctrine and tactics were still being formulated, and the new war production fleet subs themselves still had teething problems. Later in the war, the hardware, tactics, training was vastly improved over what it was earlier...you could afford to be a tad bit more aggressive if you were driving a radar periscope equipped "heavy hull" Gato around instead of a creaky old WW1 S boat or a cow like one of the "cruisers".

mogami -> Dud Torps (3/31/2002 8:23:34 PM)

Greetings, to be fair, the only country that entered WW2 with working torpedoes was Japan. They were the only peacetime military to use warshot torpedoes for practice. (This revealed torpedo problems to be fixed before the war began). The Germans could have done much more damage early on had their torpedos worked. (Hmmm..... I think one of their torpedo delvelpment officers was actually shot over this. Have to recheck)

Paul Goodman -> (3/31/2002 8:51:18 PM)

My understanding is that the Mk 14 torpedo was tested exactly twice, one of which failed, prior to its release for production and supply to the fleet. However, I don't think it was BuShips officers who should have been shot. It was republican congressmen.

I started sending fighter sweeps to Lunga along with the larger raids from Rabaul. While I assigned about 60 A6M2s to the sweep, about half of them never made it thanks to weather. We had another meeting of the big surface combat forces on Iron Bottom Sound, with another one of those blasted CLAAs going to the bottom. At this rate, I may actually consider attacking that US TF from the air again. :)

Joel launched a raid on the port at Shortlands with his new P-38s flying escort. Unfortunately, the Hiei was anchored there with a few other ships and one of his bombs found it. My BBs have certainly taken a pounding so far in this battle, but I'm definitely glad to say that I haven't lost any (yet).

- Erik

Scouters -> Evaluating hits in the AAR (4/1/2002 3:45:01 AM)
Originally posted by Adnan Meshuggi

An other question, you told us about the hits, but i think we should differ between big gun hits or huge explosions (after a critical hit) and the hits of a 40 mm cannon (well, i think it is really a difference if the washington will be hit by an 25mm flak gun or a 18,1 inch granade of the yamato....) Maybe this could be done, also, a "war record" ship by ship, like engagements, successes, shot down planes, sunk ships and so (with fog of war, this isnīt exactly, but well, you will love your successfull ships and hate your unlucky ships)

I agree. It would be very helpful to have some indication of the general caliber of the hits, especially when evaluating damage to enemy vessels. In Mr. Grigsby's "War in the South Pacific" he used to indicate this by adding 1-4 asterisks after the hit report to give you an idea of how much damage was inflicted by the hit. A typical surface action would look like this:

BB North Carolina Hit* (e.g. for a 5" shell hit)

CLAA San Juan Hit**** (e.g. for a 14" shell hit)

Additionally, after each battle, a list of the enemy ships (by type) was reported with 1-4 asterisks indicating the estimated damage. A typical AAR would look like this:

Enemy Task Force:
CV
CV**
CVL****
CA
CA
CA*
DD
DD
DD**
DD
DD

It was a quick and effective way to estimate damage, and it reflected the tendency for AARs to overestimate damage.

Could something similar to these be added as a modification to the current AAR? This could add significant detail without much additional text.

Thanks!
