Just last night, in fact, we were discussing our desire to do an expansion for FOF. It wouldn't appear in 2008, though (not if we want to devote sufficient time to getting it right).

This XP could really rock. I hope it gets done...there's more than just scenarios involved surely...some insight on the goals to achieve? plsssss :-)

Well, to be honest, while I love FOF, I'm so curious to see what WCS comes up with next, that I think I'd rather have them skip the expansion for FOF and devote the time and resources to the inevitable new project they must be at least contemplating at this moment.
I suppose it would be futile to ask what you have been considering...?

Thanks. Well, as I've mentioned before, we do have a secret project that we hope to release late this year, and that's already in an advanced state of programming (though not testing). A FOF expansion would come after that (and perhaps after another project that I've been doing preliminary research for).

GShock,
Nothing is set in stone, since the FOF expansion is not an official "go" project yet. If you dig down in the forum a few months back you'll find at least one or two threads in which various possibilities were discussed. One idea we are weighing would be the inclusion of historical battlefields and a map editor (there's definitely a thread on that somewhere), but if we did that it would come at the expense of other features. We definitely want to do more with how generals function in the game, both by adding new ratings (e.g., artillery, logistics, engineering) and adding some more rules for promotion/demotion. (ACW game players obviously love their generals, so we should make that part of the game more multifaceted.) We'd definitely want some more special abilities for brigades. Etc. etc. etc. Between the Wish List thread up above and our internal "Wish List" thread in the testers' forum there are literally dozens of excellent ideas, so it will be a matter of choosing the ones that would add the most to the game (and, one hopes, be easiest to do).

Gil R. -> RE: Expansion pack???? (5/11/2008 10:21:35 PM)

Oh yeah, I forgot: new scenarios. We already have a "Fredericksburg" (= Dec. 1862) scenario that jimwinsor put together, but it turns out that any post-1861 scenarios will require additional coding. So, a FOF expansion would have this scenario and presumably a few others (plus it would be possible for players to mod their own).

That woluld be great! Looking for the expansion, You guys have me hook line and Grape Shot

We haven't forgotten FOF. We're trying to finish "Crown of Glory: Emperor's Edition," and then will focus on the next FOF patch. And after that, I'm sure we'll think of something else to do...

Hopefully with the NW bug discovered there will be at least a patch forthcoming soon.

I would like to add to the things that may or may not have been brought up before as well.

1) Pensacola as a CSA port.

2) The end game showing me the actual end of the game stats and not just a flash page. There are lots of things to be learned from being able to view the map after the game is over. I'd like that option.

3) A much more detailed rendition of supply and reinforcment allocation. One that is determined by what parts of the country they are actually connected to. To units that are actually able to trace an unobstructed line of supply to an area that is issuing them supply.

Example: If I capture Atlanta with a Union unit but they are surrounded by Confederate controlled areas then the only supply/reinforcements they would have coming to them would be from Atlanta.

If I cut the Confederacy in half from Kentucky to Florida, the camps on the western side of the Union controlled areas couldn't send troops or supplies to the eastern side of the controlled areas.

The Mississippi river would stop reinforcements and supply from going in either direction. Not just from west to east.

4)The ability to do scorched earth in cities I capture.

Example: If I capture Lynchburg Virginia and I see Lee coming, I want to be able to destroy SOMETHING in Lynchburg. I want to be able to do some sort of damage to the areas I own. A two week time period gives alot of opportunity for setting fires.

5) Winter months to include February, which is the coldest, stormiest, winter month of all. If the game is set for only two winter months make them January - February. Otherwise have them be December, January and February.

6) Have the Shenandoah Valley be a much more important area in the game. To include a town. Winchester would be the perfect choice for that. That would have alot of horses and manpower for such a small area, as well as the highest forage number of any area on the map. An arsenal in the area could represent Harper's Ferry.

Thanks for the hours I've enjoyed the game so far.

Good Hunting.

I would also add a starting CSA Corps or division or two in SC and GA with T. Holmes, A. Lawton and J. Pemberton starting with them. Also similar to MR I would have the provinces changed: Add winchester, and VA is misproportioned: There should be a province of 'alexandria or Mannassas', Spotsylvannia, Harpers ferry and also add Corinth Miss.

That's all for now that I can think of.

My recommendation was for Winston to cover all the other little amenities that you pointed out. I'm looking to combine all that in one location in the Shenandoah Valley. While of course not all of that is there the Shenandoah was a very strategic place or it wouldn't have continually been fought over. In my games in FoF it has no importance rather than location. That's not historically accurate. The valley was tremendously important to the Confederacy in terms other than just location. It was the breadbasket of the Confederacy for one thing. Horses, manpower etc all came from this region as well.

Harpers Ferry is hard to put into a game like FoF. While it was an arsenal the main reason for it's importance was location. The place was almost indefensible, being shown by the fact that the place changed hands about six times during the war. It wasn't a fort and the ferry sits down in an hole.

So, while almost every single area on the map would have some sort of city I wouldn't change what the game is overall. Just the one place that was the most strategic in the war that currently only has value for it's location.

Here's how I look at the Shenandoah Valley, put it anywhere else in the Confederacy, anywhere, and it would be the most important area in the entire south. In FoF that isn't represented.

Good Hunting.
