Well, I don't know if the US(rahrunner) is willing to fight this turn. Unlike Turn 1, I now have reactionary forces based on Saipan, Truk, & Kwajalein. With the US only having 1CV in play, I'm betting the US will hide a few turns until they get a few more CVs.

Baby is good. She's so cute. She just needs to be nice to us and let us get some sleep.

Good point, GC (:cute baby,too:). After staring at the map for many hours, hiding seems like my only option. I just don’t have enough ships to get into an even up battle. And if I lose the Saratoga this turn, who knows which upcoming turn I will get more CVs! I know Yorktown, Enterprise, Hornet, and Wasp are in the works, but don’t know when!
 
Current US ship list: Total - 1CV, 6BB, 15CA (note some of the ships are at Guam & Wake)
IMO, the amount of ships I have means I can only do like one operation. So what island do I go for?
 
Let me compare each area with IJN forces possibly responding(by ship #/type)….
Note – does not include possible IJN subs
 
I could do some reinforcement of currently US-held islands.
 
Attu – is totally safe. No reactionary IJN ships can reach area.
Midway – only IJN ships from Kwajalein can reach (1CV, 2BB, 2CA)
Tarawa – IJN ships from both Truk & Kwajalein (3CV, 3BB, 4CA)
Wake – IJN ships from Saipan, Truk, & Kwajalein (4CV, 5BB, 6CA)
Yap - IJN ships from Saipan, Truk, & Kwajalein (4CV, 5BB, 6CA)
Guam - IJN ships from both Truk & Saipan (3CV, 3BB, 4CA)
 
I could invade a Jap Island (that all US ships can reach). But the numbers get worse.
 
Kwajalein - IJN ships from Truk, Kwajalein, & inbound Def Op ships from Japan (3CV, 2CVL, 4BB, 5CA)
Truk - IJN ships from Truk, Kwajalein, Saipan & inbound Def Op ships from Japan (4CV, 5BB, 8CA)
Saipan - IJN ships from Truk, Saipan & inbound Def Op ships from Japan (3CV, 2CVL, 4BB, 5CA)
 
I could invade a Jap Island (that only Guam & Pearl US ships can reach).
But this might be a bad idea, since it takes defending US marines off islands that will be invaded this turn.
 
Okinawa - IJN ships from both Japan & Saipan (2CV, 3BB, 4CA)
Iwo Jima - IJN ships from both Japan & Saipan (2CV, 3BB, 4CA)
 
 
On Turn 1, I knew that I was only going to be dealing with only 2 IJN CVLs (about 30-40 planes total for the battle/scenario). But with this turn, the IJN CVs are really now in play and can react into a battle (so 150 planes with 2CVs or up to 300 planes with 4CVs for the battle/scenario).
 
I really don’t like the odds this turn. I’m going to sleep on it tonite and hopefully turn in my moves sometime within the next 24hrs.

TURN 2 - USN Operational Movement Phase

Well, I decide to try and reinforce both Midway and Tarawa. Since both of these two bases are within 2 Movement points from Pearl, I'll save my warship movement until the Turn 2 USN Reaction Movement Phase. This will let me see the IJN Reaction Movement Phase first before I decide which battle(s) to take on.

NOTE: New map, GenChaos added port boxes to islands to help clarify which ships are in port / land unit on base(units touching white rectangle) and which ships/units are actually out at sea.

I decide to counter both reinforcements of Midway & Tarawa, and some ships go support my own reinforcements for Truk & Iwo.

TURN 2 - USN REACTION PHASE (US warships still at base can move up to 2 movement points)

I send both surface groups from Guam & Wake to stop the Saipan supply, while the Sara CV group support the reinforcement of Midway.

Since we are now basically done with the 4 movement phases of Turn 2, hopefully we can get the battles setup soon.

After the movement phase, there are 5 possible battles.
Random draw determines which battle to address first.
1-Yap, 2-Tarawa, 3-Guam, 4-Saipan, and 5-Midway

EARLY WITHDRAWL PHASE (random draw determines which side chooses early withdrawl first, if they want to)

1 - Yap Battle Proceeds ( USN cannot withdrawl since no ships in area / IJN wants battle )

2 - Tarawa No Battle ( IJN wants battle / USN withdraws from area )

3 - Guam Battle Proceeds ( USN cannot withdrawl since no ships in area / IJN wants battle )

4 - Saipan Battle Proceeds ( USN wants battle / IJN wants battle )

5 - Midway No Battle ( USN wants battle / IJN withdraws from area )


So now there only 3 battles for Turn 2: Yap, Guam, and Saipan

Careful Mario, bad things happen to overconfident people.  BB vs. CV is only a mismatch at over 20 miles. Besides, they're just little carriers. I am, afterall, the victor of Yap with the same force correlation.[sm=happy0029.gif]

No problem getting the transports to Guam. The Invasion Force did come under air attacks and received a few hits. But only minor damage and no TRs were sunk. No sub attacks, too.

IJN DEALS HEAVY BLOW TO USN FORCES!

Reports are coming in that 5 USN CAs were sunk and 3 CAs damaged.
While the Japanese navy received no damage and was able to supply Saipan with 2 Air Units.

Turn 2 Saipan Battle AARs submitted to me.......

AAR:  USN RAdm Random Rail
Played agressively with my CA force consisting of 4 CA and attendant DDs.  Was going well right up until my lookouts developed amblyopia.  I had the Northern Jap carrier pinned, and lost him in the dark on day 2.  Almost had ahold of him again with my other group (1BB 4CA DDs) but he got away again.  Wound up sacrificing the light group (4CA&DDs) to save the heavy group.  AA fire, entirely ineffective.  Lookouts, almost entirely ineffective.  Was spotted repeatedly without spotting the search plane.  Don't know what ship/ship gunfire was like, only got within sight once, and a 25 knot carrier somehow managed to outrun a 33 knot cruiser group.  I took a beating on this one.  I attempted to play agressively and botched it.  I probably still stood an excellent chance to get away with minimal losses, however I decided to continue to prevent the reinforcement of Saipan.  I should have realized that only having 6 search planes (what's up with that GC, should be 2 per CA/BB?) I had effectively no chance to detect and close with the enemy before bombs started dropping.  However, like I said, I screwed it up.  I'll get him next time though. RR

The USN almost cut me on day 1 with his fast advanced. Early in the morning he was very close in the middle of all my TFs.I ran away from him and I launch many waves. He start to retreat. On day 2 , near Saipan, he run again to my CVL and almost grab it.Many waves again. 2 CA down. Day 3 More of the same. He almost catch one of my CVL again.More planes waves slow him again. He also loose more ships. The Ryuho did most of the job attacking the same TF till he finish the job on day 4.The Hosho was less successful with the Taxas TF who stay more under the clouds.    There was a small surface combat at the end when the Nagato sank the last DD of his poor TF. The TR start to more to Saipan only when the sea was clean of Yankees.

The Ryuho max speed was 28k. Those 3 k help me a lot has you see ;-)

That was not historical. USN did not use search planes like that.
The problem came from the poor leadership of the US Navy.
The British Navy did the same mistake sending the Prince of Wales and the Repulse without air cover.
Three days after Pearl Harbor, the Japanese demonstrated to the Royal Navy exactly what happens to surface craft who stick their necks out without friendly aircover. Britain's Force Z, centered on the battleship Prince of Wales and the battlescruiser Repulse, attempted to intercept the Japanese amphibious forces off of Malaya. They were located by planes of several IJN air groups off the eastern coast of the peninsula, and subjected to multiple attacks, the third of which left both capital ships sinking. With their demise, the road to Singapore lay open. Only 3 Jap planes was shot down.

I'll get him next time though.

Interesting....the USN Surface Fleet search plane rule.....planes or no planes?
Mario(IJN) says should be no planes, R_R (USN) says should be full 22 search planes.
What would your comments be if you had to switch sides?
Mario - Would you be happy playing that scenario as US with NO search planes?
IMO, I had to compromise and hense why I gave the US limited search with 6 search planes.
