Of course the USCG was very active prior to Pearl Harbor. My dad in law was a Coastie aboard the Wakefield when she was bombed by the Japanese at Singapore, soon after Dec 7th.. (They had just dropped off the last Commonwealth troops prior to the surrender of that city.) Later, he served aboard the APA Calloway, and when my dad was carried to Omaha beach on LCI 91, that crew was Coast Guard as well. Yeah, I know they are called "shallow water navy", but truthfully most of the crews of American landing craft were Coasties, so we grunts must be respectful. BTW, that 2nd flag raised at Iwo Jima was from a Coast Guard ship: http://www.uscg.mil/history/weboralhistory/Resnick_Iwo_Jima.html
