Alexandra -> Opinion time (3/28/2002 9:56:45 AM)

Hey guys,

I re-started Long Long Road earlier today, with a mostly ranger core.

It's the HQ, 5 or 6 Ranger Platoons - can't recall on the top of my head, 1 platoon of Sherman A3s, and a platoon of the M13 SPAA track - those things eat infantry!!

Currently, all my rangers are the platoon type with Thompsons, BARs, satchel charges and grenades.

I'm pondering if I should upgrade - well crossgrade - some/all to the Garand/Bar/Baz/Grenade version.

Pro's for the first version: Much better when you infiltrate into hordes of baddies, as the charges and SMGs take them down fast.

Pro's for the other version: Better long range fire, able to kill tanks at more than one hex!

Any comments on which any of you feel are better is welcome.

Alex

Split it half and half.

One group can supress while the other moves up to one or two hexes away and blasts them.
If you really want to get effective have a thrid group waiting nearby and when your foes squad falls back move this third group up and hammer them.

Ive been using my infantry like this with every nation and its highly effective.
You take higher casualties but when the issue needs to be decided this is how I do it.

Since they both have their 'pros' I'd go with a mix...maybe change the platoon leader's squad to the bazooka toting variety. I've never played Long, Long Road so this is speculation.

Bazookas are a fine piece of equipment. When fighting as Americans, never leave home without them. Especially not if the road to victory is long.

If I intend to use have the rangers to infiltrate, then I prefer the ones equipped with Thompsons. Else, I choose the ones equipped with bazookas. Usually I have them infiltrate in an area with much cover, so they won't be caught in the open. Then the ability to destroy panzers from 1 hex is enough.

I think that AFVs & heavy weapons are for stand off killing and suppression and that infantry small arms are close in killing. I prefer SMG equipped Soviet units instead of rifle equipped ones for this purpose. Unfortunately MGs cannot infiltrate so you are out of luck there. If you need some range for infiltration units you will need the rifle units of course.

I think AFV's are for overrun - I do so whenever possible. The sound file is the best of all 700+ such files. If you followed the thread a few days ago, we are working on an elephant overrun file as an option for nature lovers.

Carthaginians everywhere will be proud of that file.

:D
Personally I prefer the first category with SMG's and demo charges. I like to use the terrain and get in up close. If I want to supress, well that is what MG's and small calibre mortars are for. I like to activate and deactivate various weapons in my squads in action to use a particular attack or defensive strategy. Rather than just blasting away with everything all the time. Unless you load up with lots of ammo.

Just a question but have you really had much success with a Bazooka at 2 or 3 hexes on anything really dangerous? Unless I am in open ground I would prefer to be overrun and then counter attack with demo charges at zip point doodle range. Yes I will lose some troops but that AFV is slag.

always use the rangers with bazookas and M1 rifle... with high morale and exp they are among the most deadly units in game.
i must know it, ´cause i´m at the second last scen on the long hard road. over half of my core are rangers.....

How about: Rangers mounted on elephants with Thompsons and bazookas (M9 naturally)?

Cost for transport ought to be low; elephants work for peanuts, right?

Thanks all who have replied.

I'm 4 battle into the camp now, with 1 MV and 3 DVs.

I think I'll stick with the DC/SMG rangers for now, though I may upgrade some when the better baz's come out in '44/'45.

But, given the way I'm playing - using most to all of my six Ranger platoons to infiltratre (yes, it is a little cheesy), the non baz combo works well.

I've upgraded my M13 SPAA tracks to M15s. They are pretty cool - a rapid fire 37mm cannon and a .50 MG. They can take on anything short of a real tank with good odds.

Currently, I'm debating replacing my 2 baz teams and 2 .50s with some other type of gear, probably infantry, though I may accept the initial penalties and add tanks or SPA.
