Couldn't be the Tony/Ki-61 as it wasn't yet deployed.  Doubt it was even the Judy (an inline engined divebomber) as that too didn't appear (as a spotter plane in limited numbers) until Santa Cruz in the fall of '42, so that wasn't at the Coral Sea.

IIRC, the Judy made itīs first appearance at Midway when HIJMAS carrier SORYU had 2 D4Y1 acting as scout bombers aboard. Both were lost during that action.

xj900uk -> RE: Truk - free intel part. 3 (3/20/2009 12:34:16 PM)

Thanks for that, although I actually meant when the early Judy (D4Y1) appeared in the South-West Pacific theatre.  Only a few early Judy's ever saw service as it was too structurally weak for dive-bombing and only had a limited range (as opposed to the float planes) for spotting duties.  It was re-designed to have more integral strength for dive-bombing, but production problems delayed it's arrival as the D4Y2 until '44 - by the time of the Marianas Turkey shoot the IJN was still using the quite outdated Val a lot of the time, although I do believe (correct me if I'm wrong) some of the smaller carriers couldn't take the fully laden Judy so carried on operating the Val

RGIJN -> D4Y (3/23/2009 11:57:27 AM)

I agree, youīre right in this Chris.

BTW, one of this warīs very last missions included several D4Y Suisei "Judy" attack a/c, when on August 15th 1945 the well-known IJN Admiral Ugaki Matome took off with some other pilots (IIRC it was flight of 10 or 11) to seek his death in attempting another last Kamikaze attack.
He was found dead some time later with his plane shot down...

attached is the last known picture of him when standing in front of "his" A/C. (he stripped himself of his ranks and forced another pilot to fly him into doom)

xj900uk -> RE: D4Y (3/23/2009 3:25:48 PM)

Thanx 4 the pic - big plane!  Bigger than the Val (which I've flown in)

BTW, thought that Matome's final flight on August 15th 1945 was still a bit of a mystery - we know he took off on the last 'unofficial' kamikaze mission, but I always thought no trace of the planes was ever found & there is no record even in the US archives of beating off a kamikaze attack on that day.

RGIJN -> RE: D4Y (3/23/2009 7:55:32 PM)

I think itīs described en detail in Ugakiīs diary. Will have a look into this book later tonight.
He was definately found ashore with his A/C, I remember.

Daily barge kill today: six. Another night raid to Noumea (I forget to set the Betties back from attack) resulted in losses for nothing. Bad weather sets in.

RGIJN -> next allied move (3/30/2009 9:19:53 AM)

after some days off playing, the game is now running into the final days. Itīs 9th of November 1943 and obviously the enemy is about to launch the next landing... as it looks Rossel Island is the target this time. Several TFs (Transport, CV and Sc type) are reported heading to this area.

I am prepared! [:D] Tokyo even has released some extra ship reinforcements just in time for the upcoming battle(s).

the enemy ship cluster moves on northwards. Some suicidal tuned Nick crews tried to attack with their terrible 60kg bonbons, and I am pretty glad they never made it thru the tough CAP screen to learn the truth about their ridicoulous firecrackers... [;)]

besides, an allied FT TF brought in some troops to Gasmata. I guess the intention is to open up another supporting airstrip. It remembers me well those days back when this was tried at Rennell Island (in advance of the ill-fated Irau invasion)...[:D]
So I donīt wonder one DD already hit a mine. There are thousands more waiting for juicy shipīs bellies[sm=00000959.gif]

after a heavy soft-up air attack Gasmata has fallen and my starving troops had to flee since the US bombers resisted to dump rice. Instead it rained bombs...

another IJAAF squad (Sally bombers) was foolish enough to follow their fellows from yesterday.

Allied forces still on the move. Not sure about their actual heading by now...

Hey this is my part of the story to tell[;)]

Right now i feel quite welcome at Gasmata.
Reckon has sighted an enemy carrier force located north of shortlands. Iīm sure it is accompanied by several BBs and their escorts. Next turns will have lot of tension... unfortunately I will be away the next two days. I hope I can get some sleep...

Thatīs part of the concept! [8D]

RGIJN -> RE: next allied move (4/2/2009 4:07:00 PM)

WOW... his huge fleet closes in day by day.

Today a first series of strikes against the intruders were launched. And though two or three were smashed and despite suffering some decent losses (over 200 A/C for 35 allied or so), telling blows were delivered to the US fleet carriers by my crack Betty squads (70...90 exp are the guarantee for success). But since I almost know for sure he brought the kitchen sink - even more power will be released to fend them off. Of course this time the punch will come from another place...
Meanwhile, the enemy wasted his striking power against Minelayers and an already striken escort vessel that was running away. Of course both sunk right on...[;)]

Next turns should be full of action I think, so stay tuned! [:)]

RGIJN -> RE: ITīS GETTING HOT NOW!!! (4/2/2009 11:36:12 PM)

mixed results today.

The main imperial air attack on the Allied invasion force (which just arrived in Simpson Harbour, Rabaul) was rather unsuccessful. Only a few hits, one fish into a BB. The airstrip got some decent pounding. And my airforce unfortunately missed the chance to finish off the two US CV cripples, but from their slow advance off the scene I can tell they most probably must be doomed anyway.
The remaining US carriers failed to score too. All attackes were fend off from my outstanding CAP, and no counterstrikes were made into the hell of F4Us and F6Fs. Heavy A/C losses (about 200 / 80)
Meanwhile the enemy took another base - Madang has fallen without resistance.

IMHO, the next few turns are going to decide the whole game.

fuelli -> RE: ITīS GETTING HOT NOW!!! (4/3/2009 7:58:18 AM)

Suicide attacks arenīt a speciality of the Japanese. I really wonder what the 20 Hellcats were escorting? The Pizza delivery service? On the pro side: Pennsylvania didnīt even notice the torpedo hit. Must have been a dud. Hornet and Yorktown are limping slowly beside the fact that can do much more speed. I donīt know why but right now I would say they can reach port safely if no more attacks occur.
The most pleasant about the last day was something that did not happen. Mine hits:-) More then 100 ships have enterd the invasion zone and not a single mine hit. It seems that Rabaul is not that excessively mined which was one of the main reasons to choose this for my final movement. Of course its an all or nothing assault. I do not even know how much troops he has there. Of course I have reckon flights every day but the information about ground troops are crap. Right now it says that there are two Inf units of unknown size. Yea that would be great[;)]

Your choice of target was perfect... Congrats! You really got me on a very weak position there. Never thought of an (direct) invasion & assault of Rabaul since I was focussed to strengthen the outer perimeter. And pretty busy I was with that. So "Only" about 1000 mines at Rabaul and my LCU assets in town are regrettable... [:(]

RGIJN -> RE: ITīS GETTING HOT NOW!!! (4/3/2009 7:24:10 PM)

Just a few notes to this turn.

Last night I detached almost the entire battlefleet (7 battleships plus cruisers and destroyers in several TFs) from KB and sent them into Rabaul to interfere. But this time the IJN suffered a straight defeat and there was not even the slightest chance to mess up the allied invasion fleet. I lost almost all DDs and all other ships are damaged to a good degree, most of them heavily.
And though KB had another good day and was able to hit the US carrier fleet hard, I was not able to sink their transports (BUNKER HILL, ENTERPRISE and one CVL reported sunk, plus the two cripples finished off I guess. Three of my flattops received little...medium damage in return). And these transports are the key to success, since I think there are already enough enemy LCU landed to wipe out the garrison of Rabaul.

So IMHO itīs over soon...

I am not going to call it a victory as long as the battle rages. But it is true that this turn was crucial. My surface units were able to repel the enemy attack. And this was the most critical part for this operation. A good portion of the invasion force is already ashore and it seems that the enemy did not expect me to try it at Rabaul.
Right now the map looks quite messy with dozens of scattered fleet portions heading in all directions. I have lost a lot of aircraft this turn due to the losses of my carriers. But my fighter squadrons are still strong enough to keep up the cap over my most precious treasure, my transports and the brave men fighting for the liberation of the south pacific.
