Definately my bad. A ship rigged Barque.Certainly not a clipper, although her lines are similar. Question. Would a frigate like JAs Surprise been much smaller than that? Somewhat. HMS Surprise was a small frigate , a 32 I belive (forgive me, it's been at least 10 years since I've read the books). Have you seen Constitution(a 44) in Boston or Constellation(a 20 gun sloop of war) in Baltimore? Length wise she'd be between the two, but in weight and displacement closer to Constellation . Before they made the movie , the ship they used used to be HMS Rose and was homeported in Conneticut. 28. Havent made it to Baltimore yet. All and all, she would have been a rather sizable ship, I take it. As a 28 she was barely a frigate. There were sloops that were rated 24. USS Ranger (John Paul Jones 2nd command) for one. I would say that she would be considerably smaller than either ship. Smaller than a sloop? The Constellation was built in 1859. The Surprise , when 1760's? Compare a predreadnaugt of 8,000 tons with a post ww2 CA like Rochester (17,000 tons). Get my drift? Different era's , different standards. Constellation was the last pure sail vessel for the USN. It was nearly as big as a 38 gun frigate (Like the previous Constellation). According to the books the HMS Surprise was a sixth-rate of 24 guns (8 pounders), her complement was 140 - 195 officers and men with an additional 30 Marines. According to Wikipedia her tons burthen was 350. (one note. Weights and measures of English vessels can be hard to make heads or tails of, since that source was wiki take it with a grain of salt) Another note, in one of the later books JA replaces the 8 pound long guns with 32 pound carronades. By the period of the JA novels HMS Surprise was indeed an anachronism. Still a good read though [:)].
