Good thanks overall. Have less time for RL nowadays though with the job. Still enjoying it but I am finding it tiring me out. Thats not good since it means I haven't the time or effort to put in PBEM as much as I used to!

I still have a look around here frequently but just don't have the time to post as much[:)]

How are you doing?

Question for Threadsters: what is the coldest place you've lived for 1 year or more??

My personal answer: Syracuse, NY - which i think is colder than Niagara Falls (which is N of Buffalo)... certainly gets more snow than Buffalo... worst winter i had was in Connecticut (it was normally not too bad, but that was the worst winter for the area in recorded history).

For me it was Kosovo. It wasn't so much the cold, it was the fact that I was stuck on top of a mountain with no trees or cover and constant wind blowing. That sucked.

similar situation here - RL and work are cutting into my time more that they used to.

alaviner -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/11/2008 4:08:35 PM)

I have not spent much time in the cold - but I will put my summers in a North Carolina tobacco field up as the hottest and must humid.

going outside at the height of unpleasantness in (say) Houston on a bad day isn't going to literrally kill you in 10 minutes like going out on a bad day in winter (say, during a cold day when the wind is blowing)... or if it doesn't kill you, you can get permanent damage due to frostbite.

Well, heat would kill you too if it got that much hotter than our body temperatures as it gets colder. 30 below is 128 degrees different from our body temperatures.....know what happens at 228 degrees? [:'(]

Yet I can survive 30 below with just some good clothing. I'd need a specially designed suit to handle 228.

Nope, we are much better suited to handle cold than heat.

The point is - it doesn't GET to be 130 deg F over body temperature outside... we are talking weather here, not volcanoes! [:'(]

And even with good clothing, when the wind blows when it is that cold - forget it... only option is to stay in shelter (inside, preferably, or in a car in an emergency, although lots of folks tend to die when they get stuck in their cars during something like that...)

It can get darn close to 130 in AZ in the summer. Single hottest hour I spent was at the air base outside of Phoenix (forget the base name). They marched us cadets out onto the tarmac in flight suits and mid-day and stood us at attention. Two cadets passed out from the heat.

The coldest place I've ever lived was here in CO, but that's not saying much as my other homes were Houston, DC and LA.

I wasn't there a year, but I'll agree with Mr. Twain. The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.

Ft. Drum NY. -30 in a canvas tent is no fun. Specially when Gen Meade comes up with the great idea of "Attack the cold". Newsflash, the cold doesn't care![:@]

Reminds me of an FTX in south-central Ohio one winter where we got freezing rain over night. Every tent was covered in about 3" of ice in the morning. We all had to chip our way out of our pup tents. [:D]

Hi bobo

niceguy2005 -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/11/2008 6:02:28 PM)

SO with my project running on schedule and ahead of budget, I'm just waiting for that big foot from Monty Python to squash me from above! [sm=rolleyes.gif]

Chris, it sounds like you should have a little extra time and money for a vacation!  [:D]

THREADQUIZ:

In the 1940's, where was the free world's leading producer of uranium metal?[&:]

NOTE: i am NOT talking U-235, but rather Uranium before it has been separated into isotopes.

USSAmerica -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/11/2008 6:06:38 PM)

Hey, Bobo, I'll be arriving in the Turks and Caicos Islands in 10 days time.  Is the beer tanker on schedule to arrive, or will I just have to attempt to drink the islands dry of rum while I'm there?  [:D]

I'm trying to imagine what it may have been used for before the atom was first split. I'll guess the US?

I need one bad...

The Denver museum is leading a Sea Kayaking expedition to the San Juan islands. Unfortunately it's a week I'll be in Austin. [:(] ...speaking of hot, I'll be in Austin the first week of August. [:(][:(]

Hmmm. I know that CO was big in uranium production, but that was probably after 1940.

Colorado - big in Uranium ORE, i think... we are talking about purifying the ore into metal (prior to separating into isotopes). But maybe some of that went on there as well... however, we are talking "biggest producer", here.

That was would be my next guess....but i believe Oak Ridge is where they produced the U 235.

Actually, now that I think of it. Oak Ridge barely existed in 1940, I think and there was probably no Uranium refinement going on.

It's probably someplace like Pittsburg.

Mike Solli -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/11/2008 7:19:14 PM)

There was a big refinery in Southern Ohio that was closed up some years ago.  Costs tons of money to clean it up.  Still not cleaned up yet.  People wandering around with 3 arms down there, at least those that haven't died of cancer yet.

Mike Solli -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/11/2008 7:20:13 PM)

Piketon?

Mike Solli -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/11/2008 7:20:38 PM)

Naw, started in 1954 there.

No - they produced the U-235 isotope (as NG pointed out).
