THREADQUIZ:

In the 1940's, where was the free world's leading producer of uranium metal?[&:]

NOTE: i am NOT talking U-235, but rather Uranium before it has been separated into isotopes.

I'm trying to imagine what it may have been used for before the atom was first split. I'll guess the US?

A city, please...[:)]

Hmmm. I know that CO was big in uranium production, but that was probably after 1940.

Colorado - big in Uranium ORE, i think... we are talking about purifying the ore into metal (prior to separating into isotopes). But maybe some of that went on there as well... however, we are talking "biggest producer", here.

Oak Ridge, TN

That was would be my next guess....but i believe Oak Ridge is where they produced the U 235.

Actually, now that I think of it. Oak Ridge barely existed in 1940, I think and there was probably no Uranium refinement going on.

It's probably someplace like Pittsburg.

We are talking 1940's, not 1940... Oak Ridge was quite large by the end of the war.

The free world? As in anything not Eastern Bloc?

There were (are) large deposits in Namibia and the Congo. Australian reserves were detected in the 40s as well I believe... Wasn't Canada also mining back then.

However, I am going to go with Congo as my answer. I think their deposits were first found in the early 20th century.

Ah. I misread the question. I thought is said 1940. [8|]

Still no idea.

No, not ore - refined metal (later separated into U-235, but we are looking for the producer of the metal (before isotopic separation)).

HINT: Think industrial city! Arguably, there are two adjacent cities that might make the claim, and i'll accept either.

No - you are still thinking about mining/ore (or your reference is)...

Once the metal was purified from the ore (and this place where happened is where i am looking for), it was combined with fluorine to make Uranium Hexafluoride... this was sent down to Oak Ridge for gas diffusion separation.

niceguy2005 -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/11/2008 8:08:10 PM)

I know that there was a refining operation in the Cincinatti area...but I think that was cold war time frame.

I'm still going with Pittsburg for now. [:'(]

A good signing for San Jose Earthquakes.  He used to play for Lincoln City back when he was starting out in football [8D]

No, but in the correct part of the country (Northeast US).

Apparently so... at least for the decade...

EDIT: One website mentioned they (Ames Project) supplied 1/3 of the Uranium in the first atomic pile.

[:D]

They are so old they use the first ever turbofan engines. The basic design of the engine dates from 1951. There's some stuff in them that was pretty advanced for the time.
