Hmm, I really like a good Pinot Noir. I have had a wine from there before. Was there a specific type/year you enjoyed ?

2007.

Ah, well...it appears I missed the party today. [:D]

Poor Wilhelm....tyke loved his boats and ships and couldn't understand why the Brits felt so threatened by them. His granny probably could have straightened him out, but she was long gone when he started on his doomed project. That was one of the most interesting things about Dreadnought was seeing how Wilhelm changed after Victoria died.

rtrapasso -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/26/2009 2:12:47 AM)

i thought from reading the book it was Bismarck working his evil charm on Willie... it got Otto the power he wanted (temporarily) but in the long run it also got him pushed out, and it the very long run it resulted in disaster... the weird thing is the Bismarck seem to realize this would also be the outcome of what he did.

It was a small price to pay for a fleeting grip on power, i suppose... [;)]

Fleeting? You punster you! [:D]

My take from the book is that it was just Wilhelm being honestly enamored of ships, especially British ones. Bismarck really didn't give a rats toe about boats, so I don't see him as being a catalyst for the Kaiser's fleet ambitions...maybe his colonial ambitions, sure. And there's a reasonable connection there, but I'll still contend that the bottom line was that Wilhelm wanted a fleet of his own to show off. He certainly had NO intentions of alienating England, and indeed to the very end couldn't understand their great umbrage taken at his construction project. But that was just his total lack of ability to see things 'as others see it' to paraphrase Burns.

Afternoon Delight
The Starland Vocal Band

Gonna find my baby, gonna hold her tight
gonna grab some afternoon delight.
My motto's always been; when it's right, it's right.
Why wait until the middle of a cold dark night.
When everything's a little clearer in the light of day.
And you know the night is always gonna be there any way.

Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.

Thinkin' of you's workin' up my appetite
looking forward to a little afternoon delight.
Rubbin' sticks and stones together makes the sparks ingite
and the thought of rubbin' you is getting so exciting.

Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.

Started out this morning feeling so polite
I always though a fish could not be caught who wouldn't bite
But you've got some bait a waitin' and I think I might try nibbling
a little afternoon delight.

Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.

Please be waiting for me baby when I come around.
We could make a lot of lovin' 'for the sun goes down.

Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.

Repeat chorus.

Thanks Robert!

i agree that Otto had nothing much to do with the Kaiser's fascination with ships... i think OvB had everything to do with the "total lack of ability to see things 'as others see it'" of the Kaiser... this was a deliberate ploy by Bismarck to undermine Willie's father who was a liberal and constitutional monarch... Willie was tricked into believing he was an all powerful Emperor and started to act like it, leading Germany down the path Bismarck predicted.

So, if he realized what was going to happen, why did B. do it? My guess is he realized what he had done too late to stop it.

Don't know if the u-tube link works for you to give you the song, but it was considered "soft rock" or maybe "pop" when it came out... listening to it now. it sounds almost country and western.
