terje439 -> OT - WWII quiz (7/11/2008 10:26:12 AM)

I am bored, and want to increase my post count! [:D]

So to fix those subjects I will start a new WWII quiz thread, new Qs will be posted every now and then (feel free to highjack!!)

Q: Who did Hitler chose to take over as German Head of State after his own suicide?

Kaletsch2007 -> RE: OT - WWII quiz (7/11/2008 11:19:37 AM)

As far as I know, it was Admiral Doenitz.

oscar72se -> RE: OT - WWII quiz (7/11/2008 12:03:29 PM)

Actually, Karl Dönitz was appointed President, Reichspräsident, and Joseph Goebbels became the Head of Government (Reichskansler). The day after Hitler´s death Goebbels killed his six children, went out to the garden with his wife where she took poison and he shot himself. This meant that Dönitz was the only head of state. After the war Dönitz was sentenced to ten years in prison after which he moved to Auhmühle in Schleswig-Holstein where he wrote his memoirs and lived on a captains pension (the rank he had before Hitler promoted him). Dönitz died in a heartattack in the early 80´s.

terje439 -> RE: OT - WWII quiz (7/11/2008 12:05:15 PM)

I was fishing for Dönitz here, actually did not know that Oscar, cool I'm learning as I go along [:)]

Q: What was the codename for the German assault on Norway?

Caranorn -> RE: OT - WWII quiz (7/11/2008 12:23:29 PM)

When do you know the questions are too easy? When even I know them (yes I studied history, but usually I stand no chance at these types of grunt quizes.

Unternehmen Weserübung (also Operation Weserübung or Fall Weserübung).

terje439 -> RE: OT - WWII quiz (7/11/2008 12:29:04 PM)

Q: What was the name of the STRONGEST Polish enlisted soldier at Monte Cassino, and what is so strange about him?

Neilster -> RE: OT - WWII quiz (7/11/2008 2:57:02 PM)

Göring was dismissed from any of his numerous positions, because being in the Alps instead of fighting an Endkampf in Berlin in April 1945, he sent a telegraphic ultimatum to Berlin. It's content was that he would resume the entire Leadership of the Reich, if he wouldn't get a telegraphic response from Hitler in a certain time. That silence would mean the "Führer" "wouldn't be able to act at all". Thus Göring could try more openly to get a cease fire arrangement with the Western Allies. (Well the man was a known drug addict).

This telegram did enrage Hitler so much that he ordered to totally dismiss Göring and have him arrested by the SS. And he ordered Dönitz who was in Kiel/Flensburg then, to become the next head of state. He chose Dönitz, who lost one or two sons being U-Boot Kapitäne in WW2, simply because he was one of the most fanatical Nazis in the high Command. Goebbels on the other hand, who as a more left winged Nazi and fanatic contemplated an arrangement with the Soviet-Union against the Wallis, stayed faithfully to his master in Berlin for the Götterdämmerung. Thus not being an obvious choice for the leadership.

Oh, and in spring 1945 Hitler ordered preperations for destroying the entire German economy. Because: In the titanic racial struggle the German people is weaker than its enemies. Thus it will perish and doesn't need any economy no more. After the war Speer stated that he sabotaged this "Nero" order, which isn't entirely true.

Regards

And because of that I must highjack the interrogation... ehm... sorry. I ment questioning.

No idea, so guessing, and putting ALOT of weight on the name of the unit here [:D]
-it's main purpose was to hunt down Axis mail pidgeons!

Am I close?

You are indeed correct.

Britain conscripted birds into service. They also had "National Pidgeon Service" and "Falcon Control Unit" to protect the carrier pidgeons.

The biggest operation during the war for birds was in the Italian Campaign when US sent over 10000 messages with pidgeons because the mountainous terrain limited radio communications.

Neilster -> RE: OT - WWII quiz (7/12/2008 11:53:44 AM)

This is trickier and hopefully hard to Google. What strange method of guiding American air-launched weapons was suggested by a famous researcher towards the end of the Second World War?

Cheers, Neilster

Damn this one I have no idea about. And not as easy as the anti-pidgeon unit to guess either...
I know the USA had radio-guided as well as free-fall gyro-guided weaponry, but I am betting those are not the one you are after...

Trained dolphins with a homing device?
