Two possibles spring to mind:

It might be HMS Centurion, the old de-militarized battleship that was used to try and fool the Italians that the Mediterranean Fleet still had an operational battleship for use with the ill-fated "Vigorous" convoy.

It might be HMS Repulse. I seem to recall that the British tried to keep the identity of Force Z secret (presumably so Japan did not know how hopelessly inadequate it was [:(]). They would have been only to pleased to announce the modern and battle hardened battleship (Prince Of Wales) was heading to Singapore, but the un-modernised battlecruiser Repulse may have had a less than worrying effect on the Imperial Japanese Navy.

Absolutley bang-on with the second possibility. Singapore, early December 1941. The press was prodded to make glorified references to the Prince in order to imtimidate the Japanese, but referred to the Repulse as something like "other capital assets". She was even berthed separately and further away from prying eyes.

I have the feeling the Repulse might be the answer to one of your three questions. Also the Renown. I considered the Resolution but soft 'e' pronunciation doesn't work. So based on your wording above I'm going with:

HMS Repair = Repulse
HMS Refit = Renown

Suicide of General de Artillerie Becker in front of Gestapo officials. He was head of the Research Department and Weapons Training Office. He was criticised by Hitler for low return results in munitions production.

General Becker's suicide is correct.
Hitler was paranoid about an ammunition shortage occuring and demanded more stocks. There had been a major,major arms squeeze in 1937 and 1939 due to shortages of raw materials. It was the release of scarce raw materials mid 1939 that allowed a huge increase in production, under Becker.. But Hitler's favourite, Fritz Todt, had just taken leading role over the military ordanance organisation and he got the credit. Military procurement became part of the Todt organisation, away from military control. Becker shot himself.

Well that's embarrassing - is it worse people thinking I thought the siege of Sevastopol was in July 41 (although I suspect December was too early anyway), or confusing V for 10 [8|]?

Personally I think either are sufficiently bad such that there is only decent thing to do. I shall retire from the forums and not show my face in public again.......[;)]
