Orm -> RE: Next quiz (3/15/2011 12:12:10 AM)

Aircraft 1:
1) I am an counter in MWIF.
2) I am the first combat aircraft my country both designed and built.
3) I am a fighter but I was actually made from a modified bomber design.
4) I was mostly used as close air support but I was originally intended as an interceptor.
5) I am a CW counter in MWIF.

The Australian Boomerang looks to fit the bill.

if you are not even going to guess ...then I will give the answer

British (Scottish)  52nd lowland division

terje439 -> RE: Next quiz (3/17/2011 11:36:20 AM)

clue 5 led me to believe it might be a ship (the sister referance).
BUt out of curiosity, how is it labeled incorrectly?

Warspite1

I could not understand the first two clues - I'm still not sure what they mean - can you clarify please.

michaelbaldur -> RE: Next quiz (3/17/2011 8:03:32 PM)

the British mountaineer air landing division is labelled 51 highland ...should have been labelled 52 lowland ...

the 52 lowland was a mountaineer that was trained for air landing ... and there are a air landing counter ......so the unit has a counter (more or less)

but the counter was labelled the 51 highland division ..  so the unit don´t have a counter

the sister units clue had to do with Scottish units ....

but the counter is clearly wrongly labelled .... the 51 highland was NEVER trained as a mountaineer or for air landing ....

Okay thanks - I see what you were getting at.

terje439 -> RE: Next quiz (3/17/2011 10:13:17 PM)

I'll make one again then;

Clue 1: I am a plane
Clue 2: My design might lead you to think I was intended for the previous war.

Of what situation did Churchill say: "I ought to have known. My advisers ought to have known and ... I ought to have asked."

Shannon V. OKeets -> RE: Next quiz (3/20/2011 8:30:15 PM)

I have been going crazy the past couple of days trying to remember what the Germans called their units that got cut off during the Russian winter offensive 1941-1942. Hitler labeled it a tactic and insisted on it being used throughout the long retreat from Stalingrad.

I assume that virtually all of you know the answer to this (even some remote part of my brain does I am sure).

Unlucky B******s? [;)]

Nothing comes immediately to mind - are you thinking of one word or a phrase here? I seem to recall he classed certain key positions as fortresses that had to be held at all costs - only Hitler could authorise any withdrawal.

One word. The concept was permitting a strongpoint to become isolated with the intention of reestablishing communications with it later (days, weeks, months).

He was commenting on the defences of the "Impregnable Fortress" and the fact that they were not anywhere near as strong as he believed them to be.

"I ought to have known. My advisers ought to have known and...I ought to have asked... the possibility of Singapore having no landward defences no more entered my mind than that of a battleship being launched without a bottom."

I think that pretty much sums it up.

paulderynck -> RE: Next quiz (3/21/2011 7:43:14 PM)

That's it.

More of this plane was built abroad under licence than in the home country
