During World War II an aircraft was shot down at a height of 12,100 metres (40,000 ft). This was the highest interception ever made by a pilot without a pressure suit, flying in an unpressurized cabin. What were the two aircraft involved?

Apparently some have claimed interceptions at up to 45,000 ft, but this seems unlikely.

Either way, the same two aircraft types were involved.
Warspite1

Okay, clue time.

The aircraft involved were: a) one of the most famous of WWII aircraft, and b) a lesser known type. The theatre where the interceptions took place was the Mediterranean.

I take a guess at one of the variants of Me-109G as the well known aircraft. I know some of them where used as high altitude interceptors. But I think some of them had pressurized cockpits.

No, not the 109. Final clue:

The interceptor was British and the intercepted was German.

Ok . So Spitfire IX vs Ju 86 photo reckon version. That JU86-p got everywhere.

Warspite1

Yes its the Spitfire IX and the Junkers Ju-86R. Every reference source I have checked seems to have a dfferent height for the interception - and even location - but the sources at least agree on the two aircraft types and the approximate height!!

I was going to guess on a German ship like Scarnhorst but the sad face in clue two made me change my guess to a RN ship. So I go with HMS Royal Oak.

What type of boat was it.

My guess would be one of the later types German U-boats.

ezzler -> RE: OT - WWII quiz (2/27/2012 8:52:07 PM)

Ahh. And I thought that was hard!

yes it was a late war German Uboat.

The type Type XXI U-boats were highly prized by all of the conquering allied powers. The French kept theirs in service for years.
Of 118 built between 1943 + 1945 only 4 were finished and took to sea as the idea of producing parts in one location and shipping them for assembly to another was a disaster.
Allied bombing caused delay after delay and railroads often had other priorities.
And the prefabricated parts often didn't fit causing extensive reworking to be carried out.

Extraneous -> RE: OT - WWII quiz (2/28/2012 5:39:13 PM)

What Italian port was attacked on December 2, 1943?

Over 100 German Junkers Ju-88 bombers of Luftflotte 2, achieving complete surprise, bombed shipping and personnel operating in support of the Allied Italian campaign, sinking 27 cargo and transport ships and a schooner in the harbor.

At first, the Allied High Command tried to conceal the disaster, in case the Germans believed that the Allies were preparing to use chemical weapons, which might provoke them into preemptive use, but there were too many witnesses to keep the secret, and in February the U.S. Chiefs of Staff issued a statement admitting to the accident and emphasising that the U.S. had no intention of using chemical weapons except in the case of retaliation.

Warspite1

I assume that refers to the battle e.g. Taranto, Pearl Harbor etc as opposed to the ship never leaving port - but I might be wrong...

If she never left port at all, that must mean she was attacked on the slipway or in the fitting out basin. Can't readily think of any in the latter camp.

brian brian -> RE: OT - WWII quiz (2/29/2012 12:53:17 AM)

Extraneous's question's answer is Bari, Italy. That raid did hit an Allied ship loaded with chemical weapons, causing many military and civilian casualties. These were compounded by the secrecy surrounding everything - basic precautions like taking off exposed clothing weren't used, for example. The whole incident was hushed up to a huge degree, with some details only coming out decades later.

I just read a new history of the Allied campaign in Italy that devotes several pages to this incident. Rick Atkinson's "The Day of Battle"
