seille -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (11/30/2008 10:10:22 AM)

The south.

continued to put some pressure on the northern flank of AG South.
It looks good, i cutted off several german units.
My Stalingrad front keeps close contact to the germans waiting for a chance to attack.
Damaged some german fortifications.

Near Baku i evacuated some of the defenders and start to build a new front north of Baku.
The first air battle was already fougth northwest of Baku.
Giving my new front air cover had a high priority on my side.

george1972 -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (11/30/2008 11:32:01 PM)

Another 5 turns have passed so another forces overview. The overview shows 2 things very clearly: Overall German strength has declined over the past 5 turns while overall Russian strength has hardly increased. Instead Russian production was focused heavily on mobility (trucks) and supporting weaponry (artillery). Despite the huge production difference, I managed to inflict great losses on the Russian armies, mostly in the South. But despite keeping my infantry relatively intact, my air force, artillery and flak suffered greatly.

The production difference has finally been made good by the fall of Baku. Germany now controls 3 major centers and 7 minor ones, giving it 110,000 production. The Russians now control 4 major and 4 minor centers, for a production of 120,000. At least, as soon as Baku is fully restored, which will take a few turns still.

German advantages in supporting weaponry have almost vanished except for mortars and a slight edge in artillery. But the biggest problem is the fact the Russian infantry now outnumbers the German infantry 2 : 1 and has much better Staff support and mobility. The non-existent mechanized corps I feared early in the war have now turned into reality.

The other factor against Germany is that for the short term, it is more likely that production will fall into Russian hands (Riga, Kharkov) than into German (Sevastopol) due to the distribution of forces along the front.

Will the capture of Baku turn out to be a Pyrrhic victory?

george1972 -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (12/3/2008 9:46:12 PM)

Germany, Turn 41, August 31, 1943

The first act of this story saw the initial German invasion of the Soviet Union failing to decisively defeat the Russians in one swift campaign, followed by a long withdrawal during a ghastly winter. The second act described the great advances of the Wehrmacht but also some serious reverses. Leningrad was captured, but lost. Stalingrad was captured, but lost as well. The Fins were jolted out of the war and Baku stormed and taken by Romanian forces.

The balance of power now clearly shows a Russian advantage in strength on the ground as well as in the air, but both combatants now posses almost equal means of production. Germany could still wrestle the Russians to a stalemate, if it manages to destroy more Russian combat power than it loses for a prolonged period of time, which would even out the unequal force ratio.

For this, every means at Germany's disposal must be mobilized and ruthlessly put to use: Total War.

And now for the third and final act...

george1972 -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (12/3/2008 9:48:10 PM)

AG North starts fighting back against its opponents, but lacking air cover it cannot protect its most useful assets (artillery) properly. Even when stationed inside fortified areas, the massed Russian air forces still manage to take out the guns and no replacements are arriving.

george1972 -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (12/3/2008 9:52:08 PM)

AG South is now put under pressure from all directions: from the East comes the powerful Stalingrad Front, lavishly equipped and supported by air and artillery assets. The recent loss of air power makes taking out those supporting weapons an impossible task.

Its exposed northern flank is now probed and penetrated by Russian units and the "paper front" quickly collapses, sending German units into headlong retreats toward Kharkov, which is held only by a token force.

Some relief is gained by the arrival of the Luftwaffe from AG North which now redeploys behind Kharkov and starts hitting the mobile units that by-passed the German defenses.

george1972 -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (12/3/2008 9:55:16 PM)

In the Crimea the fighting continues but my forces are running out of steam and manpower. The have only just reached the first fortress but the Russian units guarding it are strong enough to prevent any quick success.

The Romanians start repairing Baku's production facilities and immediately have to come up with a plan to counter the new Russian Front advancing towards Baku from the North. Redeploying formations from this Army Group to other fronts is still out of the question.

seille -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (12/4/2008 9:02:04 AM)

The North.

We were very successful capturing Riga and destroying
bigger parts of AG North.
High german losses, so we maybe can force them to not longer
focus at the south only.

seille -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (12/4/2008 9:08:25 AM)

The south.

Also very successful attacks. We recaptured Kursk, destroying the garrison.
And we unleashed a hard attack against the northern units of AG south.
We destroyed or crippled several german units there, destroyed or captured a couple of
fortifications. Now the destruction of the Luftwaffe pays off a bit since we can use
our own planes and artillery with max effect.

North of Baku we build a new front. Unfortunately the germans were very fast in cleaning
the Baku area, so we have less time than expected for the buildup before the fights will start.

TheArchduke -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (12/5/2008 9:30:47 AM)

Riga poses a big problem, because without it, things wouldnīt look too bad for george. Once again Seille has to throw unexperienced raw recruits before the Romanians, whose Exp must be enormous by now. If the game was not finished, I would say: Hang in there, George!

george1972 -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (12/8/2008 10:05:46 PM)

Germany, Turn 42, September 30, 1943

Things have taken a turn for the worse as Seille unleashes his offensive on Riga. I wasn't expecting this, as can be seen from the destinations assigned to my newly formed troops.

george1972 -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (12/8/2008 10:07:45 PM)

The situation in the Baltic and Belorussia is rapidly deteriorating. The road to East Prussia is virtually devoid of German troops. A bold Russian commander could claim to be the first to bring the fight to German soil before Winter if he dares...

george1972 -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (12/8/2008 10:11:29 PM)

AG South is involved in a life-or-death struggle with the Stalingrad front coming from the East and the Orel front moving towards Kharkov from the North. The Luftwaffe fights hard to regain control of the skies, but until that is gained, stand-or-die tactics will mostly result in my troops dying. So the AG takes another step back, while retaining a strong position East of Rostov.

george1972 -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (12/8/2008 10:14:41 PM)

In the Crimea, I continue to push the Russian back into the fortress. Will I be able to pull off a "Tobruk" on the Russians? Forcing a numerically superior enemy to surrender would be a nice bonus.

The Romanians start battering away at the new Baku Front. Their enemy's relative inexperience makes their job a little easier, but OKH has already sent notice: from now on, all reinforcements are to go to AG North and Center.

russian turn 42.

seille -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (12/10/2008 1:43:37 PM)

The North.

Riga is under my control now and i started to repair itīs production.
My fores concentrate on destroying the german north front and then attack the center
from two directions.
And i want Konigsberg. My spearhead is only two hexes away now....

Due to my bad reconnaisance i missed the chance to hit the AG North HQ in the open.
All i hit was the AG center HQ in Dvinsk. Even i knocked out 6 of 10 truks and some more
troops i was not happy with. The northern HQ in the open would be broken after that attack......

seille -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (12/10/2008 1:49:16 PM)

The south. No major operations.
I just continued to move closer to Kharkov from north and east.

And i attacks some fortifications near Rostov to prepare my attacks to the southern part of
AG South.

North of Baku i fought back a german unit. I was really unhappy to see all of itīs
four tanks were able to retreat.
After the hard german air attack and my now evacuated airfield my Baku troops are now without
air cover. I have to repair the airfield as fast as possible or build a second one.
My artillery and trucks north of Baku are in danger especially in this terrain with no cover !

george1972 -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (12/14/2008 3:16:06 PM)

Germany Turn 43, October 10, 1943

The Summer is coming to an end and the situation on the front-lines is serious. On nearly all fronts Germany is forced to retreat and the Red Tide seems almost unstoppable. Due to the relative high mobility of German units, I managed to disengage several units and give them some rest behind the front line. The Russians plunged their strongest and mobile units into the gaps thus created to keep up the pressure. These fluid situations offered the German High Command the possibility to show the world the next new doctrine after "Blitzkrieg": "Mobile Defense".

george1972 -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (12/14/2008 3:24:10 PM)

The Russians have reached the borders of East Prussia and AG North is redeployed to counter this threat, but this leaves AG Center "dangling" in Belorussia.

george1972 -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (12/14/2008 3:27:44 PM)

AG South managed to put together a reserve force that is thrown against the Russian spearhead that crossed the Donetz and is threatening to drive into its rear. A large artillery unit is identified and attacked so strongly that it simply vanishes from the Russian Order of Battle. Still the situation remains highly volatile.

george1972 -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (12/14/2008 3:31:13 PM)

Near Sevastopol some minor progress is made but it will take a long time to reduce the numerous Russian infantry dug in there. The good news is that the city itself is finally in artillery range.

The Romanian Army Group conducts an aggressive defense that develops into a full-blown offensive. Russian commanders desperately try to keep their disintegrating front-line intact, but for now they fail completely.

TheArchduke -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (12/14/2008 4:03:58 PM)

So slow updates. But a true nailbiter here. The russian offensive in the south has lost much its steam and 16 artillery is a major haul. My prediction for the next turns: Königsberg holds, AG Center retreats, but Stalingrad may be retaken. Keep it coming, guys!

george1972 -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (12/14/2008 4:10:14 PM)

Yeah, sorry 'bout the slowness, I had a very full social calendar this month, but we should pick up speed again now and bring you the "grand finale" so you can finally see who actually won.

seille -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (12/14/2008 4:52:49 PM)

@Archduke
Pls donīt underestimate the work this AAR makes especially with the work on all the graphics.
And since we both have also a real life itīs not easy to post the 3-4 turns per week i had
in mind when we started. This is the (little) price the readers have to pay for this VERY detailled AAR.

Iīll post my next turn tomorrow.

AZKGungHo -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (12/15/2008 3:08:13 AM)

Hey guys,

Just keep doing what you can when you can.  The fact that we are all on pins and needles waiting for the outcome just shows what a fantastic job you are doing with this AAR!  Best ever in my book!

rominet -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (12/15/2008 9:26:10 AM)

Very interesting AAR!
I just bought the game and i may confess that this AAR has a part of my decision to buy this game, and for now, i am not disappointed.

Just a question to George and Seille.
You alternatively give us the 2 points of view of this war.
How do you do that without giving to your opponent, precious informations?
I now that when the turn is done, ... it is done but however ...!!!
Do you have a delay between your turns and the AAR?

Thanks!

george1972 -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (12/15/2008 10:46:11 AM)

The game we are writing this AAR for has already finished. We played it from March 2008 until July 2008, so that's why we can show you "insider information". Funny thing is that writing this AAR is actually taking longer than playing the game ;-)

seille -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (12/15/2008 3:18:08 PM)

Hehe George, youīre so right.
But for me writing this AAR is like playing the game again with all ups and downs.

The happiness was wonderful after destroying all the planes on the ground and now iīm sad
after the loss of all my expensive artillery[:)]

@Rominet
I think you wonīt regret buying this game. Itīs a lot of fun.
In case you ask how we can write this AAR after such a long time...
The game has a screenshot function that makes a shot at the start and end of each turn.
And it has a battle review. With both combined (reopening yours and the enemy turns) you can write
a very detailled AAR.

seille -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (12/15/2008 3:19:44 PM)

Russian turn 43

First the overview and production.

seille -> RE: George vs. Seille - A Russia 1941 AAR over 60 turns (12/15/2008 3:23:15 PM)

The North.
Only smaller attacks.
For now i want Minsk back and force AG center to retreat
since i realized iīm too weak to get Konigsberg in a fast attack.
