RayKinStL -> Austrian ships?!!?!? (7/31/2008 7:56:15 PM)

What the hell is the point behind the two light ships Austria is given at the beginning of the game? Seems totally useless to me. Also, is there a way that the game will skip the bnaval phase if you have no ships?

NeverMan -> RE: Austrian ships?!!?!? (7/31/2008 7:59:06 PM)

Ray, I agree that the light ships are useless for Austria. At least in EiA Au's ships could transport and provide naval invasion supply.

Mardonius -> RE: Austrian ships?!!?!? (7/31/2008 9:50:02 PM)

They are there for the Turk to sink, Allah willing!!!

AresMars -> RE: Austrian ships?!!?!? (7/31/2008 10:07:15 PM)

Funny enough, I agree with Mardonius....Great way for the Turkish to make extra PPs.  Just dont send too many ships...

Ray, the Austrian ships are a legacy from Empires in Harms (EIH) v3.0 that is part of DNA of EIANW.......

There is a YAHOO group for EIH, now in version 5.1 if you are really interested....

gwheelock -> RE: Austrian ships?!!?!? (7/31/2008 10:49:54 PM)

Actually in the old EIA; there was a use for Austria (and Prussia) to have an exactly >1< factor fleet; since
that could carry an entire corp of troops.   In our games; Britain would usually pay for the ship & fleet counter
so that he would have an extra counter to use.

RayKinStL -> RE: Austrian ships?!!?!? (8/1/2008 12:49:39 AM)

Yea, that light fleet is worthless since you cant even make a depot on it.  I wish you didnt have to have a certain number of shipd to transport troops.  That was always part of the mystery.  Since sea battle is so simplistic, the mystery was in how many ships each fleet counter had.  This crap where I gotta have 16 ships just to transport my 8 calvary corps is fking stupid...seriously, I hate it.

Further, I hate having to even play the naval phase as Austria.  There should be an option in the Reinforcement phase where you can check a box to skip Naval phase.  As France, if GB plays right, you rarely do anything, so skipping that phase would help.  Of course you would code an override if you got attacked or something that would need attention.

Just let your game host know that it's ok to skip your naval turn. If he gets to
it first; great. If not; you do it yourself. Speeds the game up a bit.

I'm not interested enough to get into a EiH Yahoo group, but I would be interested to know what EiH players think about the latest version. Is it better, how is it better, why is it better, etc.? How many players are actively involved in EiH??

All I have played is this EiANW version. It's interesting as far as a game goes, but the sooner we are provided a classic EiA OOB and an updated EiH OOB, then we can better compare and contrast gameplay. I want to try both.

DCWhitworth -> RE: Austrian ships?!!?!? (8/1/2008 8:29:27 AM)

All the PBEM games I am playing in have a default agreement that Prussia, Austria and France (usually because they are blockaded) will all have their naval phases skipped by the host unless they say otherwise.

This works especially well if the host is Turkey or Spain, you can get a lot of phases done at once.

NeverMan -> RE: Austrian ships?!!?!? (8/1/2008 3:19:14 PM)

The problem is that by introducing these "fantastic" [8|] EiH rules, they have managed to make the Austrian ships utterly useless and pointless. Just another way EiH is "enhancing" [8|] the game.

anarchyintheuk -> RE: Austrian ships?!!?!? (8/1/2008 7:11:44 PM)

IMO Austrian ships should be useless. Historically, if their troops were going anywhere they'd be walking or boarding British ships.

That's fine, then simply do not have them. Just don't put them in the game. Why bother if they can't transport troops, provide naval supply invasion or essentially attack anyone?

Thresh -> RE: Austrian ships?!!?!? (8/2/2008 9:27:58 PM)

There are some aspects of EiH that I think are very cool, in particular the OOB's and the method to change them. I like the addition of some of theleaders, others are a headscratcher.

In EiH Naval counters have morale as well. England is 4.0, Demark is 3.5, Holland is 3.5, some countries get modifiers if they are in a certain zone. Austria has a morale of 2.0.

I think Mike's heart was in the right place with EiA. There was a tipping point though, and so much chrome was added itmade the game pretty unplayable IMO. If most of the additions had been optional, I think it would have been a good game. He did yeoman's work in getting it done though, and his original counterwork and map are very good IMO.

Th number of EiH players varies, as does the number of EiA players...

They can still provide sea supply.
As Austria, I had them included in my plan for corps surviving inside France. Eg hit the a port and use a lend ship by my ally to provide invasion supply. Then if i took a port Austria could place a depot and use sea supply. Since it requires a fleet in eigher end of a sea-supply chain.
In later wars, you might have build some transports, and dont need to lend a fleet.

But yes, they seem to have little use.
Have you tried ask GB to lease them ? He could still use them in battles where he has 1.5 times more heavies.
+1 GB +1 Heavy Advantage, -1 Austrian ships is still net +1.

Kind Regards
Bresh

Bresh,

Are you talking about the two lights Austria starts with??? Those can't be used for sea supply because you can't make depots on light fleets. Maybe I am misunderstanding what you are saying?!?!

Depots on fleets is called invasion supply.

Depots starting in a supply source habor, and ending at a friendly controlled habor is using sea supply. This required a friendly fleet at the supply source or the friendly controlled habor.

For the record I was refering to invasion supply, but bresh, you are correct they can be used for sea supply. This is the ONLY thing they can be used for.

Yes, and it is so neat to be able to supply corps all over the board [:D][:D]

we can consider this fleet as a fleet in being. Playing against the IA, I found Turkey sending his transport without escort in Med. Sea ... so Austria can have his transporting fleet [8D]... or Turkey need to have a transport fleet with a lt/hv fleet always. This can help Russian

Also can be used in the piracy options.

Wouldn't know, I try not to play with that option.
