wild_Willie2 -> OT: War in Georgia, what tank is this?? (8/13/2008 11:56:51 AM)

Hi there, this image is of some destroyed tanks in Georgia.

Am I the only one to recognise a T34 as the second tank in this image ????

It's a T-62. Look at the "bulge" in the middle of the gun barrel.

T34/85 would be my guess too. Wonder why they employ 50 year old tanks though when they have been part of the Soviet Union for 50 years and there were enough "modern" tanks built. But IIRC also in the conflict in Yugoslavia in the 90s there were still some T34 around. Even Austria has more modern tanks! [:D] So I guess it´s some successor of the T34.

Terminus -> RE: OT: War in Georgia, what tank is this?? (8/13/2008 12:06:01 PM)

Like I said... A T-62.

castor troy -> RE: OT: War in Georgia, what tank is this?? (8/13/2008 12:12:24 PM)

What makes me wonder is the turret though. A T-62 has a very flat turret already while the one in Willie´s picture seems to have a pretty high one.

T-62

With the damage, lighting, and distance, it is hard to identify without seeing the track gear and rollers.
Imagine this with the barrel sleeve..Hatch in the right area, but this is only one version of many.(T 55 series).
The hull is too low for a T 34 in the first pic..Either T or I are correct.

m10bob -> RE: OT: War in Georgia, what tank is this?? (8/13/2008 12:31:13 PM)

This is showing a model of one in approx the same hull angle as the orig pic..Looks like the same gun..

The barrel sleeve is just past midpoint on the gun barrel. That ain't no T-55 I ever saw...

Mmmm... Spam in a T-62 can...[:'(]

HansBolter -> RE: OT: War in Georgia, what tank is this?? (8/13/2008 1:12:24 PM)

Looks like an upgunned (retrofitted with a cannon from a T62) IS2 to me.

Local Yokel -> RE: OT: War in Georgia, what tank is this?? (8/13/2008 1:29:46 PM)

I'm probably completely wrong, modern armoured vehicles are not my strong suit, but is the vehicle in fact a tank? I agree with castor that the turret looks high for a post-war Soviet tank design. Might this be an SP artillery piece, e.g. a 2S3 Akatsiya?

the SP artillery would have the turret further behind though and I think the tank in Willie´s pic has it in front.

hueglin -> RE: OT: War in Georgia, what tank is this?? (8/13/2008 2:24:25 PM)

I agree with Terminus. It's a T-62 with upgraded armour on the front of the turret. Here is a picture of one withdrawing from Afghanistan.

Zakhal -> RE: OT: War in Georgia, what tank is this?? (8/13/2008 4:22:15 PM)

When I was in army back in -98 we trained inf close assault against tanks with moving T55:

It was the only working tank I saw in army during my entire service and its still used afaik (T72s went to scrap allready though). The rest I saw (all disabled) were ww2 captured russian stuff and som german stugs in the brigades "tank park". In the forest there was one post-ww2 UK tank too that had been reduced to scrap after been used for target practise.

bradfordkay -> RE: OT: War in Georgia, what tank is this?? (8/13/2008 4:51:44 PM)

The photo that castor troy posted looks like a KV-1 to me... which is also WW2 vintage so I must be wrong...

greg_slith -> RE: OT: War in Georgia, what tank is this?? (8/13/2008 5:41:17 PM)

The KV series had smaller road wheels, while the T-34 series had the large wheels.

Feltan -> RE: OT: War in Georgia, what tank is this?? (8/13/2008 5:51:45 PM)

Hi guys,

It is a T-72, probably an M model or an A model with a "Dolly Parton" armor upgrade. Although we can't visualize it, it probably has a Command and Control upgrade using GPS courtesy of the US.

Georgia only has T-55's and T-72's, and that ain't a T-55. Additionally, the sole armor battalion of the Georgian military is located in Gori -- which is ground zero for the latest battles.

Regards,
Feltan

Mynok -> RE: OT: War in Georgia, what tank is this?? (8/13/2008 5:56:33 PM)

Something sure popped-the-top on that front tank. Sabot round or airstrike?

bobogoboom -> RE: OT: War in Georgia, what tank is this?? (8/13/2008 7:22:41 PM)

i imagine someones going to be trying to order some m1a2 or lepord 2 very soon.

...OT: War in Georgia, what tank is this??

It's a dead one for sure.

06 Maestro -> RE: OT: War in Georgia, what tank is this?? (8/13/2008 9:09:04 PM)

It is difficult to be certain, but I would say it is a T64. The one telling feature is the horizontal ridge on the front slope. Niether the T62 (an antique) or a T72 have that.
The 72 was an export model as Feltan mentioned, but an old one. I doubt those were donated to Geogia after the Breakup of the S.U. Perhaps they purchased a few after achieving independance.
The turret and hull is very similar to a T55, but the bore evacuator on the 55 was on the end of the barrel-not the middle.

Something sparked the ammo rack. It could have been a SABOT, or 30/40mm from an aircraft going through the roof. From what we can see of the terrain, it could easily have been a light AT weapon. Shaped charges can easily penitrate the side of a T64.

A bomb or large (AC lauched) AT rocket has a tendancy to disasemble the target a bit more...

What kind of cycle is that?

I could be wrong but I think that is the Georgian Presidential limousine. They had to get rid of the '57 Zil after the Russkis cut off the pipleine in '06.

Neilster -> RE: OT: War in Georgia, what tank is this?? (8/14/2008 12:53:28 PM)

It's clearly a British Matilda II. You can tell by the 2 pounder it's armed with. It was probably captured in France in 1940 and then used by the Germans in the invasion of the Soviet Union. Captured again, probably at Stalingrad, it would have been used by a Russian crew in the huge Red Army armoured offensives of 1943-45, possibly carrying the nickname "lucky", except in Russian.

From here, its history becomes murky but somehow this tank made its way into Georgian hands following the break-up of the Soviet Union. Given the Matilda's thick armour, its destruction must have been due to a lucky shot. Although I could be wrong...now...where did I put my medication? [:'(]

Cheers, Neilster

I realy appreciate the style of the language you use here, very clinical.

It's obviously not of Russian manufacture, the Russians make bicycles out of concrete don't they ?

Titanwarrior89 -> RE: OT: War in Georgia, what tank is this?? (8/15/2008 2:58:45 AM)

I would say T-62/72 early series. The type of suspension system seems to look like a christe suspension and location of the muzzle brake.

I think it may just be a Badonkadonk.
