Advisors or administrators (Governors, if you will) contyrolled by the AI and who administer the economy, so you can take control of the campaigns and not have to deal with it. An example would be Medieval Total War, where you are allowed to select and have the AI take control of Administering Taxes, Building, Training units, etc. I think this would also permit a player to ease themselves into the game. Eventually, when the player feels more confident he/she will take back control of the function.
