Iīm not sure where the Allied will fight in Malaya. First I thought at Malacca, but they withdrew. Perhaps they will now fight in Johore Baru. If not, they can only fight at Singapore...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Malacca

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 5004 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1623

Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 0

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 0

Japanese max assault: 44 - adjusted assault: 46

Allied max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1

Japanese assault odds: 46 to 1 (fort level 0)

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 2601 troops, 76 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 36

Defending force 2664 troops, 23 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 58

Midway reinforcement invasion will go in tomorrow. South Sea detachment will land after a cruiser TF will bombard the enemy positions. Hopefully this will then crack the defenses... The TF that was spotted yesterday disappeared, guess it headed full speed towards Hawai again...

I mean perhaps it is inevitable RG will fall, but usually there is at least a delaying action, and it is very strange the location of his build ups remain unknown.

yes, itīs totally unknown for me where he will intend to hold. In the Philipines it looks like he will hold at Clark and Manila, in Malaya I thought he would hold at Malacca but his troops are now falling back to Johore Baru, donīt know if he will fight there. Three of my divs were sent to Burma just to find the whole place emtpy, there hasnīt been a single Allied unit spotted so far in Burma. Target for the next weeks will be Java, at the moment there are a lot of troops in Batavia and Soerabaja. In China I have ordered my troops to assault Changsha as there are some 140.000 reported enemy troops there (so I guess we will face some 100.000). With the abandoned Ichang and Homan I can already defend a buffer zone if the enemy tries to counterattack further North.

Donīt know if it is because of his assumed inexperience in PBEM or if itīs only a good tactic to confuse me, but at the moment my opponent is far less predictable than the most experienced opponent I could think of.

The hit rate over Manilla may be low, but at least they do some damage.  Damage that is being repaired by engineers, instead of building fortifications.  Or making them burn supply.

Did your CAs off Midway really suffer ?

Aircraft Attacking:
20 x Ki-21 Sally bombing at 11000 feet

first attack on PM (Laeīs airfield was built up to level 4 yesterday). I want to knock out the airfield to interdict those nuissance airstrikes. Shouldnīt be much of a problem with those IJA medium bombers at Lae and there are nearly no engineers at PM to repair the damage. One more attack on PM and the af should be closed, then Rabaul will be targeted...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 93,61

Japanese Ships
AP Amakasu Maru #1, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
SS Triton

Japanese ground losses:
34 casualties reported

Triton kills an AP with a small contingent of the South Sea detachment that wasnīt unloaded at Midway... Unfortunately it carries the "parent unit" so if this ship goes down I fear to see the ghost unit bug then or the bug when the rest of the unit (which will be 99% in this case) wonīt turn into the parent unit... [8|]

Attacking force 57674 troops, 744 guns, 17 vehicles, Assault Value = 1697

Defending force 23076 troops, 121 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 508

Allied ground losses:
63 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

Moved a couple of divs, a HQ, some arty and engineers to Nanning to clear the road from China into Indochina. Only two Chinese corps there, in total 4 units so there must be two HQs also. Attack next turn, I expect the enemy to be forced to withdraw to the base one hex South where they will be destroyed then.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Nanning

Allied Deliberate attack [X(][X(][X(]

Attacking force 16146 troops, 118 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 507

Defending force 92946 troops, 977 guns, 22 vehicles, Assault Value = 1697

Allied max assault: 491 - adjusted assault: 57

Japanese max defense: 1807 - adjusted defense: 2909

Allied assault odds: 0 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
62 casualties reported
Guns lost 5

Allied ground losses:
1621 casualties reported
Guns lost 43

Now whatīs that? Bigbaba sees nearly a dozen units marching into the base and the first turn he can attack he does so! How can he think that he could do damage to a dozen defending units with two understrenght and undersupplied Chinese corps? Well, it will make it even easier to destroy those units. Those units should have been immediately withdrawn on 7 Dec.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Midway

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 2333 troops, 65 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 34

Defending force 8256 troops, 79 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 158

With those troops at Midway now I expect to see the base falling...

It will stop them from building more forts and this is the reason why I fly those attacks. And the fact that I can achieve supply hits. But repairing damage doesnīt use up any supply, only building uses up supply.

My CAs didnīt suffer at all as the 155mm guns canīt really harm them, but itīs a very bad sign if your bombardment TF goes in and gets heavy return fire. Your invasion TF following will then be hit hard most certainly, as seen in this invasion also.

Aircraft Attacking:

after first having most of the Allied airforce in the SRA stationed at Batavia, my opponent took the aircraft further back to Bandoeng to have them save against shore bombardments. But after having Palembang, Bandoeng is now in normal range of IJA medium bombers, so some 110 bombers were ordered to attack Bandoengīs airfield after having it reconned for the last days. 74 bombers locate the target and we destroy a dozen aircraft on the ground but only one of the dangerous [;)] Dutch torp bombers was destroyed. Hit rate on the airfield wasnīt satisfying but Iīm now starting on seriously wearing down the Allied airforce within the SRA - if bigbaba this time decides to fight and not withdraw the airforce immediately, like it was done in Malaya.

This was a better strike, coming in from Balikpapan. Normally I really donīt like using IJN torp bombers for anything else than nav attack but in the case of Java, thereīs not much else I can do than also using my long range bombers. The defending fighters werenīt a threat at all, flak is far more dangerous here. And still, this attack was a total success, weīve destroyed a lot of aircraft in total, while still we havenīt destroyed enough bombers in total today. Only bombers are a threat to my upcoming invasion of Java.

hmm... I was amazed to see the base NOT falling today with this force attacking and the failed Allied attack yesterday. Doesnīt matter, casualties within our troops are light, disruption is very low and the base should fall tomorrow.

BUT! I proved to be a dumb ass again, no matter how many thousand PBEM turns Iīve played already. Imagine that: I forgot the division under Southern Area command that is scheduled to attack Hong Kong (38th div?). Instead of moving this unit out to be deployed somewhere else, I just wondered why it seems that Iīm not having the troops on hand for my conquests that I normally have... [8|] After more than 3 weeks of war I figured out that I was missing this division... now it will take a week to have the lift capability in position to take up the division and at least another 10 days to have it redeployed... Lecivius -> RE: Waiting for AE - bigbaba vs. Castor Troy (11/5/2008 8:11:07 PM)

My vote on Burma is a stand at Akyab.  Rangoon will never hold up during the initial attack, so defending it is a sink of scarce resources.  A determined defence at Akyab will start to stretch the Japanese neck, an if you make a mistake he can crucify you there.

Akyab can turn out to be a torn in the a$$ of the Japanese in Burma. But it can alos turn out to be a blood bath for the Allied when they have to bring in troops and Rangoon is full of IJN bombers. [;)]

Two of my divisions in Burma are one hex South of Mandalay now and we spot ONE [:)] enemy unit there. The third division that was sent to Burma is now at Rangoon, waiting to get shipped out again.

As mentioned yesterday, our subs reported a big convoy heading towards Johnston Island (where it arrived tonight) and KB was still sitting near Midway to cover the still ongoing supply unloading and fights on the atoll. Iīve ordered a full speed run towards Johnston and unbelievable, KB managed to move 9 out of the max 10 hexes and ended up just in the hex 240 miles North of Johnston, which means that the torp bombers would drop torps. 114 Kates dropped torps, means 3 times more than what KB will have available in AE [;)] The convoy was hit hard.

BUT, as expected it was a reinforcement convoy and this convoy had time to unload in the night phase and even though many ships sunk outright, I fear that the enemy landed a couple of thousand troops. When the ships were reported sunk we got the message that parts of the 25th USA / C division and parts of the 3rd USMC def btn were rescued. When you see what the USMC def btn is able to put up for a fight against my invasion of Midway, then I have to really think about attacking Johnston when there are now more troops than on Midway. Even though our opponent lost his convoy and a big part of the troops, he can consider this operation a success because I am now thinking of not going in against Johnston. I expect him to also reinforce Palmyra and Canton, which would probably be the A and B of the 25th USA division. With 100+ assault points on an atoll, I would have to bring at least a div and a bgd - which arenīt available of course. But we have time and who knows what I will decide to do in two months time as there will be a lot of divs available coming from the Philipines and Malaya.

two days ago I spotted 8 Allied units marching down the railroad from Manila to Naga and I was highly alerted! This was a move I didnīt expect my opponent as I thought he would just sit at Clark Field and Manila. Iīve only landed minor troops at Naga, biggest unit was a nav guard with some 100 assault points. So all available transport aircraft were flown into the area to bring as many troops to Naga as possible and we were able to raise the assault points from 200 to 450+ in three days and there is also a bgd coming in with a convoy that should arrive in two days. I expected some 800 Allied assault points but as we can see now, not even 500 are attacking and even if there are no forts, I donīt see a chance for the attacker as it is a wooden hex. When our bgd arrives, our assault value will be around 700.

Even though bigbaba seems not to be up for a fight on the whole map, he still surprises me with unexpected moves like this one. Another unexpected move (and here the question is if it is a good one) happens in Malaya. First the Allied troops abandoned Malacca and I moved in to take the empty base with level 3 forts. Then the Allied troops sit at Johore Baru and now bigbaba decides to move against my troops at Malacca again! This will be the easiest way to attack them...

One of KBīs victims today:

USS Allen (Destroyer # 66, later DD-66), 1917-1946
USS Allen, a 1071-ton Sampson class destroyer built at Bath, Maine, was commissioned in January 1917. She operated along the U.S. east coast and in the Caribbean area during her initial months of service, performing patrol and escort missions after the United States entered World War I in April. In June 1917 Allen escorted a troop convoy across the Atlantic and then began began combat service out of Queenstown, Ireland. Until the fighting ended in November 1918 she escorted shipping and made anti-submarine patrols in the waters off the western British Isles and France. In December Allen was one of the many U.S. Navy destroyers that escorted President Wilson, embarked on the transport George Washington, into Brest, France. Less than a month later, she returned to the United States.

In 1919 Allen resumed peacetime operations in the western Atlantic and in the West Indies area. She was designated DD-66 in July 1920, when the Navy implemented its hull number system, and was placed out of commission in June 1922. She returned to commissioned service three years later as a Naval Reserve training ship, based at the Washington Navy Yard, D.C. Allen was again decommissioned in March 1928 and spent the next dozen years laid up in the Philadelphia Navy Yard's "red lead row".

In August 1940, when Allen was the last survivor of her class, she was placed back in commission in response to the growing crisis that followed the outbreak of World War II in Europe. Shortly afterwards she was sent to the Pacific and was thereafter based at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. She was present there on 7 December 1941, when Japanese aircraft carriers delivered a devasting raid that formally brought the United States into the war. Allen's crew claimed assists in shooting down three of the attacking planes. For the rest of the Pacific War, the old destroyer was employed on escort and patrol duties, mainly in the vicinity of the Hawaiian Islands, but with some voyages to and from the U.S. mainland. In September 1945, with hostilities concluded, she steamed from Pearl Harbor to Philadelphia, where she was decommissioned in mid-October. USS Allen was stricken from the list of Naval vessels at the beginning of November 1945 and sold for scrapping in September 1946.

We shoot up another TF with a huge strike and see most of the 115 USN base force going down with the ships. yesterday the base was empty. Today during the night naval phase the base was empty. Unfortunately it wasnīt empty anymore when my paras were dropped in. The paras were completely destroyed. This means, the enemy in Malaya has no chance to hold this line and will soon be driven back to Singapore... [:D]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One of the DMS that was sunk today. Fine with me if he sacrifices those valuable ships...
USS Boggs (Destroyer # 136, later DD-136, IX-36, AG-19, DMS-3 and AG-19), 1918-1946
USS Boggs, a 1090-ton Wickes class destroyer built at the Mare Island Navy Yard, California, was commissioned in September 1918. She performed her initial active service in the western Atlantic during the spring and early summer of 1919, then returned to the West Coast where she operated until decommissioned in June 1922. In mid-1931 Boggs was reclassified as an auxiliary (first as IX-36 and very soon afterwards as AG-19) and converted for employment as a radio-controlled target ship. She served in this role, as well as being used for towing targets and for minesweeping, for nearly a decade. In November 1940, after being transferred to Pearl Harbor from California, she was reclassified as a high-speed minesweeper, with the new hull number DMS-3.

Boggs mainly operated out of Pearl Harbor for the first two years of World War II, performing minesweeping, patrol, towing and transportation duties. In April 1944 she joined the Operational Training Command at San Diego, California, serving as a fast target tug. She was redesignated AG-19 in June 1945 and shortly afterwards sent to the central Pacific to provide target towing services closer to the combat zone. Returning to the United States early in 1946, USS Boggs was decommissioned in March and sold for scrapping in November of that year.

USS Boggs was named in honor of Rear Admiral Charles S. Boggs (1811-1877), who commanded several ships during the Civil War and led the European Fleet in the early 1870s.

one Chinese unit seems to try to flank Canton, no idea for what reason. He canīt circle those troops as we have Hong Kong in the South were we "could" [:D] retreat. With the urban bonus he would need some 10.000 assault points to achieve anything as we have also some forts. And he canīt starve me because I can ship in supplies if he manages to cut the town off from the road heading East. Instead of marching on Canton, bigbaba should concentrate on Changsha as this is the place where he could lose some 100.000+ troops if he doesnīt act.

with the forced retreat the Allied troops suffered at Malacca Iīm now sure that they wonīt be able to hold on to Johore Baru (level 0 forts) so the enemy will be pushed back to Singapore easily I guess. With the unconventional moves of my opponent I have now again changed my plan for Singapore. Therefore my airforce is now attacking Singapore. While it first looked like that all enemy forces on Malaya will retreat without a fight to Singapore (where I just wanted to starve them), the enemy now took serious losses while achieving nothing. This means the troops that will be at Singapore can be worn down pretty fast I guess as we have nearly 2500 assault points on the island. Instead of starving the enemy in Singapore I have now decided to take the base. The plan to just starve the Allied troops on the Philipines is still valid though.

How important is the Burma Road in the game anyway?

It is important as the Chinese get IIRC 500 supplies over the Burma road every turn. When you take Lashio, the Burma road is closed. The supply situation in China is severe (in Nikmod not so severe as in stock though) and losing those 500 supply points just makes it more severe. But thereīs nothing an Allied player can do against losing it anyway.

castor troy -> RE: Waiting for AE - bigbaba vs. Castor Troy (11/10/2008 9:46:55 AM)

DD Jarvis was hit twice by IJN subs off Johnston Island. The destroyer isnīt confirmed sunk but after two torp hits, I guess the ship is doomed!

USS Jarvis (DD-393), 1937-1942
USS Jarvis, a 1500-ton Bagley class destroyer built at the Puget Sound Navy Yard, Bremerton, Washington, was commissioned in October 1937. After shakedown and alterations, she spent the next two years operating in the eastern Pacific and the Caribbean. Jarvis was based in Hawaii after April 1940, taking part in the U.S. Fleet's preparations for the increasingly likely outbreak of war with Japan. She was tied up at the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard when the Japanese attacked on 7 December 1941 and used her guns in the efforts to repel the Japanese aircraft.

During the next seven months, Jarvis participated in several operations, including the abortive Wake Island Relief expedition in December 1941, anti-submarine patrols and aircraft carrier screening duties in January 1942 and escorting convoy to Australia, in February-March and May-June 1942. Jarvis was then employed on patrol and escort work in the south Pacific until mid-July, when she joined the task force that was preparing for the U.S. Navy's first major Pacific War offensive undertaking, the invasion of Guadalcanal and Tulagi.

Arriving in the invasion area on 7 August 1942, Jarvis covered the landing forces as they put U.S. Marines ashore. The next day, she was hit by a torpedo when Japanese aircraft counter-attacked. Though badly damaged and down at the bow, she was still seaworthy enough to proceed independently to Australia for repairs. While steaming past the northeastern end of Guadalcanal during the night of 9 August, she was briefly and ineffectively engaged by Japanese ships during the Battle of Savo Island. Shortly after noon on that day, USS Jarvis was attacked by an overwhelming force of Japanese land-based bombers. Hit repeatedly, she was lost with her entire crew.

The enemy troop transport TF made it unspotted all the way to PM! [X(] We have 200 aircraft at Lae, the bombers set to nav attack and not a bad number of bombers took off to attack the American/Australian/Dutch TF at Port Moresby. Unfortunately we have only one daitai of IJN torp bombers at Lae as weīve needed the Army bombers to attack the airfield. Even though the IJA bombers are between 75 and 80 exp, the hit rate is rather poor. What is really amazing is the kill rate of my Zeroes. For the loss of 1 Zero, they took down 22!!!! Hurricanes, piloted by Australian pilots! The pm strike wonīt face many fighters I guess...

This is the pm strike and again a good number of bombers attack but again the bombing runs are spread out over nearly all combat ships and so we donīt really do much damage. And still, at the end of the day, there are two burning and heavily damaged Allied CAs at Port Moresby. This is a reinforcement TF for PM and NOT an evac attempt! And thatīs great, I love to see my enemy reinforcing PM!!! [8D] This will be the grave of a lot of ships, ac, troops as he will have to supply this base and as soon as I have recons and bombers at Gili Gili this will be a nightmare for my opponent. Hopefully weather allows us to fly strikes tomorrow, would love to really kill off one or two cruisers. What was really devastating was the flak fire the Allied cruisers were able to put up already. At the end of the day, we have lost 13 bombers to flak.

DAMN! Weīve ordered a deliberate attack and exactly this turn, the Chinese were able to move in more troops. Northern China will get interesting as the enemy is now (again) moving on Homan AND 4 units are also spotted to move on Chengting in the North. I guess I will have to send two or three divs from the South to reinforce my positions in the North if the Chinese really get serious mounting an offensive. With fort levels between 2 and 5 I hope to hold long enough until the reinforcement arrives.

castor troy -> RE: Waiting for AE - bigbaba vs. Castor Troy (11/10/2008 10:10:56 AM)

Well, at the moment Iīm a bit shocked. This is a closed IJN AAR and I was more than surprised to see my opponent reading my AAR while I posted another day:

Iīve pmīd my opponent and I am pretty unsettled at the moment. [8|] The first pages clearly says that this is a closed AAR, but as I see my opponent lurking in my AAR I am now not anymore surprised to see his moves... [8|]

From now on, there will be no more talks about strategy and no more new combat reports. Iīm thinking about not posting a combat report that is not at least 7 days in the past. [8|]

I don't want to throw rocks too soon, but if he did it on purpose (ie not by accidentally clicking on the thread and going back immediately without reading a single line), what a shame ![:-]

mmm, Iīve got a reply on my pm that Iīve sent him and he told me that he didnīt know that heīs not allowed to read it, he thought he would only be not allowed to POST something in my AAR. Well, this means that all I have written so far was read by my opponent. This for example also explains why I see his troops turning around two days after I post here that I find it strange that they retreat, this gives him free info on everything so far.

Now what should I say...[8|]
