Another silly beginner question: What is the benefit of reducing the range of engagement on the unit information screen? It seems to me that as long as you don't take advantage of op fire your unit can stay concealed without having to modify the range. Therefore, a natural assumption would be to set this number up to max effective range of the unit. I am sure there is more to this but I have not been able to figure it out. TKS in adavance to anyone that can answer this.

Cheers

When you play a scenario with human wave attacks by the Russians you will appreciate not having to decline every Opportunity Shot available to your troops. You can get 20+ opps for each of your units in that situation. Your fingers will get tired of right-clicking.

Another reason is that with Limited Ammo on, you sure don't want to take all those long shots that the Op Fire makes available to you.

TKS rbrunsman, I have not played any large scale scenarios as of yet, (slowly getting the hang of the game with tutorials and small # of turns scenarios) but that makes a lot of sense.

One reason for setting reduced ranges would be to allow units that will auto fire anyway (like AA units) to let a target get closer before firing, improving the odds of a hit.

Note: Setting reduced ranges doesn't always prevent a unit from requesting an Op-Fire shot.

If you have inferior accuracy, and/or inferior penetration, it is good to let them get in close and ambush them. Against a human in PBEM or hotseat, this is the range that you troops WILL fire at, because you are not given the yes/no option (for obvious reasons). In an online game, your opponent can at least tell that you were asked for op fire, and may deduce your position from it, even if you said 'no'. Again, this makes you want to insure the kill. rbrunsman has it dead on vs the comp. You will get soooo sick of hitting no, that you will lower the ranges. Or you will run out of ammo (especially APCR rounds!).

A good example of why you'd want to reduce the response range is the Bazooka. This weapon can be deadly out to 3-4 hexes, but worthless much beyond that to their maximum range of 6-7. If you set the response to 1, then YOU, not the computer, can decide if the shot is worth taking.

Another good example would be infantry scouts. Set their response to '0' because they shouldn't be engaging any enemy units at any range.
