hellfirejet -> WORLD WAR 2 COMPLETE VERSION ? (2/18/2009 3:26:14 PM)

Hello folks,
Anyone here like me would love to see a version of the game that includes the whole of the 2nd World war Europe and the Atlantic ? for me that would be a dream come true, imagine the size and scale off the game!!!

Terminus -> RE: WORLD WAR 2 COMPLETE VERSION ? (2/18/2009 3:31:56 PM)

It would be utterly unplayable.

jerrylt2008 -> RE: WORLD WAR 2 COMPLETE VERSION ? (2/18/2009 3:32:13 PM)

Hellfirejet,

I would love to see it too. However, the logistics alone would make it unmanageable. Not to mention the map size and the amount of units would be astronomical. It would be a miracle and a wonder. I would definitely play it but the turns would take forever to plan out and then the turn resolution would take all day.

Mynok -> RE: WORLD WAR 2 COMPLETE VERSION ? (2/18/2009 3:34:46 PM)

Unplayable as a two-person game definitely. Massively multiplayer might work if done well.

hellfirejet -> RE: WORLD WAR 2 COMPLETE VERSION ? (2/18/2009 3:38:53 PM)

Hi Guys,
WITP is brilliant, I have lost count of the hours I have been playing, I think a divorce is brewing hey ho ! sod her I say this is better anyway hehehehe.

And the game would still take FOREVER to play. More people doesn't equate to faster play.

Quite the opposite surely?

Ask the Threadwar players how far they've gotten in gametime and how long it's taken in realtime.

+1

This GLOBAL idea comes up every year or so and assuming all the programming/testing/design issues could be handled (which I doubt) I do not believe manual would be done before I die (ie: 40 years from now). And no, I would not be satisfied with a PDF download. It would have to be something I could read and study while hiding in the hills from bill collectors.[:(][:(][:(]

hellfirejet -> RE: WORLD WAR 2 COMPLETE VERSION ? (2/18/2009 4:03:07 PM)

CarnageINC -> RE: WORLD WAR 2 COMPLETE VERSION ? (2/18/2009 4:07:39 PM)

To easy to box in the Germans and they definately did not have a big fleet, the Italians to could be boxed in easy and hunted down with A/C.  I think this system is best left for the Pacific theater...IMO [;)]

Terminus -> RE: WORLD WAR 2 COMPLETE VERSION ? (2/18/2009 4:20:09 PM)

True. Plenty of people dream of the Mega-Games++++, but they don't actually bother to think it through. I used to dream of such a thing as well. Then I grew up.

is this not called WiF and is a few forums up from the WitP forum in Matrixs' list?

Ah but there is the issue: Witp is not designed for multiplayer. In fact, it seems designed to hinder it badly. Round robin turn submission is death on any multiplayer concept. Absolute death. IT DOES NOT WORK AND NEVER WILL. (Loud so Matrix can hear it [:D])

I've played multiplayer space conquest games with 6,7, and 8 players and easily just as many units to move about and order. The key is simultaneous turn submission and player compartmentalization. Each player deals with only their pieces and their diplomacy.

While I love the boardgame WiF and found it a superior system, I am highly doubtful how well that design will translate to a multiplayer computer game. So much of the system is designed for immediate player interaction to resolve combat. That's what made it so enjoyable as a boardgame: the permutations of any situation were vast providing lots of replayability and variety.

As far as Threadwar.......it will take 5 times longer than real time.....as we average 1-2 turns a week......'Fear and Loathing' we did manage to average 5 turns a week.......that being said......T's right a comp. WW2 game in this format would be unplayable in time terms......

Mynok -> RE: WORLD WAR 2 COMPLETE VERSION ? (2/18/2009 5:25:47 PM)

It's not the scale or the level detail that is the hinderance. It is the turn submission/resolution/reporting engine that fails. It must be simultaneous and compartmentalized. Realistically, it would have to be designed ONLY for massive multiplayer in order to work.

Panther Bait -> RE: WORLD WAR 2 COMPLETE VERSION ? (2/18/2009 8:51:47 PM)

Considering the land combat system is arguably the weakest portion of the game, and that the European/North African portion of the war was, for the most part, a land war (or at least to a much larger degree than the Pacific War), I am not sure it would work.  Not without some serious upgrades at least.

I mean the Soviets alone probably had more active LCUs in late 1944-1945 than there were total in the Pacific (I am totally guessing here, but I bet I am not far off).  You would more than double the number of US air and land units.  Possibly the same for the UK.  Much more developed density of land hexes in Europe.  Hundreds of subs for the Germans.  Mulitple new nationalities (Germans, Poles, Czechs, Romanians, Italians, Norwegians, Belgians, expanded French and Soviets, Hungarians, Austrians, Latvians, Lithuanians, Estonians, etc.).  And with the whole world playable, you would probably have to finally develop Allied production models (at least UK, Soviet Union and the remaining European nations, maybe the US could stay "off map"), in addition to German and Italian production obviously.

My God, I can't even imagine it.

rowan8915 -> RE: WORLD WAR 2 COMPLETE VERSION ? (2/18/2009 9:09:52 PM)

Or you could try Matrix World in Flames comming out this July!

hellfirejet -> RE: WORLD WAR 2 COMPLETE VERSION ? (2/18/2009 9:51:45 PM)

Hi,
Yes I know world in flames more than likely my next purchase, or will WITP AE be first out don't matter will buy both!

However World in flames ain't as detailed as witp?

Sarganto -> RE: WORLD WAR 2 COMPLETE VERSION ? (2/18/2009 11:41:15 PM)

Outing myself as a Paradox-Fanboy, I would recommend Hearts of Iron 2.

Terminus -> RE: WORLD WAR 2 COMPLETE VERSION ? (2/18/2009 11:54:20 PM)

Or not, if you want a detailed game.

Or not, if you want a detailed game.

It's always trading details and accuracy for actually making a game playable.
It may be not the most detailed world war 2 simulation, but the whole world with every nation, production, diplomacy, detailed events etc. etc. is in this game and it doesn't take you 5 years to complete a game from 1936 to 1945.
And it is loads of fun. Steamrolling the Soviets, successfully completing a Sealion and then invading the US. In which other game can you get that?

Mynok -> RE: WORLD WAR 2 COMPLETE VERSION ? (2/19/2009 3:22:33 AM)

It's a great boardgame. Definitely less detailed than Witp. I have doubts how it will translate to a computer game considering how interactive the system is.

I have enjoyed the Hearts of Iron series for the Eruo land war aspect. But it doesn't do a great job with Air, and worse with naval.

Hornblower -> RE: WORLD WAR 2 COMPLETE VERSION ? (2/19/2009 5:22:09 AM)

Was there not talk of WITP for the Med?  UVforum if i recall.

Alfred -> RE: WORLD WAR 2 COMPLETE VERSION ? (2/19/2009 6:43:04 AM)

There was a Med mod made for WITP.  Speedy and Pauk started respective AARs.  That match seems to have dies a natural death.

Alfred

Flying Tiger -> RE: WORLD WAR 2 COMPLETE VERSION ? (2/19/2009 8:44:24 AM)

Died a natural death?? Or got hidden 'undercover' by Matrix so they can sell it as another add on down the track?? The first expansion pack for AE??

I remember the scenario for War Plan Orange was on the Forum here for a while... then it dissapeared... then it re-appeared as a stand alone game.

Conspiracy theorists of the world unite!!

I would really like to see an Atlantic WW2 game at the WitP level. Back in 1970s SPI did a solitaire game called wolfpack which covered the U-Boat war, and PC games such as Great Naval Battles covered the surface ship side, but you could imagine a game at WitP's level of detail covering the whole Atlantic campaign.

The WitP game engine isn't the one to do it with, unfortunately, but I can always dream.

If they did make a Atlantic version, it definately would have to be WW I. THAT! Would be so cool....WOW...just thinking about that with the Atlantic raiders in the south and the huge battlefleets in the North Sea and Med...jezz I'm getting excited just thinking about that!

If any of you are intrested in naval board games you absolutely have to check out Avalanche Press and the Great War at Sea Series, I've gotten all but 2 of them and the art work and play style are great. Money well spent! I only bring up that point because they have a great WW I series in the North Sea and Med. plus others featuring raiders and stuff...I always wanted those games to be digitalized.
