Apparently the strategic AI is even more retarded than the one on MTW2 ..[:o]

Phatguy -> RE: Empire Total War (3/4/2009 10:28:47 PM)

I have succumbed to the dark side...the box sits 2 feet from me, its evil emanating into my pores calling me with it's siren song

Another bad thing I noticed with steam and E:TW.....No manual, not even in pdf form..Or so many are complaining about..Granted, the manuals that
the Total War series put out werent great, but not including one with a DL? Boggles the mind.....Oh yeah, some complaints about servers being busy and therefore not being able to play....Maybe time for me to get and play a non-steam driven game.

I like the concept of Steam, but somehow the execution is lacking, especially with the "big" releases.. It seems to handle small games fine. Maybe i'll try it out on one of those bargain games first before spending 50 at gamestop and letting Steam control my fun.

EDIT: The no manual part is only for the direct download from Steam, not the boxed version.

Well the actual manual is rather weak anyway. This is without a doubt the thinest TW manual ever.

True, but thats not an excuse....There are probably quite a few new players getting lost and the manual gives you some minor help... The manual showed up on steams' site but too litle too late.

Steam also installed the game in one location.Would not give me an option to install on my "game" drive but only on the c drive..Maybe I am missing something.... Saved game is there, but I found it by searching ALL folders and for some reason found it in a hidden folder..Now I am sure thats a bug or I inenvertantly hit something..I just cant picture CA doing something so idiotic as hide the save game files deep in your system..

sol_invictus -> RE: Empire Total War (3/5/2009 1:49:05 PM)

Yeah, I haven't even attempted to install yet. I am bracing for the inevitable stress in about an hour. From the sounds of things, SEGA/CA really screwed the pooch with this rediculous Steam activation and the messed up file locations that resulted. People can't even find save files or files needed to mod. I gues this is the brave new gaming world that we must face.[:@]

Phatguy -> RE: Empire Total War (3/5/2009 2:54:07 PM)

Next time i'm contemplating buying a game with steam activation required is the day I walk in front of a bus....less painfull

Zakhal -> RE: Empire Total War (3/5/2009 2:55:36 PM)

Huh? I have used steam for over 4 years and never had problems..well except the new euro prices.

Terminus -> RE: Empire Total War (3/5/2009 3:33:16 PM)

I just installed it this afternoon. Took all of 15 minutes, including activation, and it performed flawlessly. No worries here.

Phatguy -> RE: Empire Total War (3/5/2009 4:37:27 PM)

Well, I am happy that some have had no serious problems..Mine installed fine but for some connection issues originally but I really dont like the fact that I cant install wherever I like, the original steam DL had no manual whatsoever. Reading the forums over there I notice a lot of people having no issues and a lot having issues with Steam. Seems the huge game releases get nerfed over on Steam. And really, how do you justify having Steam tell me that a bunch of different anti-virus software is not really compatible with it. Yes I can run ETW fine but I do need to close Ad-aware,Avast and Webroot and Xfire...otherwise its a 50-50 shot of running the game..Not good these days..I know a friend has one of the other ones that are on Steam's list but his game works fine...So maybe its my system but doubtful..

Zakhal -> RE: Empire Total War (3/5/2009 4:45:38 PM)

I have used multiple anti-virus with steam including avast without any problems. I havent used ad-aware, webroot or xfire though.

Phatguy -> RE: Empire Total War (3/5/2009 5:52:18 PM)

Well, I havent tested each one seperatley but I know if I close all of them, ETW runs, if I dont close em its a roll of the dice

Terminus -> RE: Empire Total War (3/5/2009 5:55:38 PM)

Well, I'd have to say that I'd never buy games on Steam itself. I bought both DoW 2 and ETW in box copies, so I only had to do the activation thing. So that's the caveat for my positive experience.

Well, I wasn't going to post this but after reading so much about Steam here, I had to. Check this out:
Downloading Games

Speedysteve -> RE: Empire Total War (3/5/2009 9:21:00 PM)

RIDICULOUS,

It says Steam is going to take an ETA of 13 hours to finish updating before I can play ETW....WTF?!? So far been sitting here for an hour[:@]

Speedysteve -> RE: Empire Total War (3/5/2009 9:48:00 PM)

Brilliant. Restarted and now just the grand total of 5 hours + to update[8|][:@]

I read a number of issues people with physical game copies were having that sounded a lot like this...even though you have a disc in the drive, it still tries to install the downloaded version. If you stop it, and then open and close your optical drive again, it apparently wakes it up to the fact there's an actual DISC in the drive.

Terminus -> RE: Empire Total War (3/5/2009 10:05:23 PM)

I hate to harp on about it, but mine worked first time, and took about 8 minutes to do the update. Weird...[&:]

Speedysteve -> RE: Empire Total War (3/5/2009 10:26:41 PM)

I am seriously very miffed at this. Down to 4 hours + now....Sorry Arctic Blast your suggestion had little effect. POS that this is

Has anybody in Canada got this game yet?

Lützow -> RE: Empire Total War (3/6/2009 9:49:22 AM)

I got both titles and while Empire offers easy accessability and a tidy interface, CoG:EE provides more depth for 'thinking gamers'. However, Steam is a PITA. Couldn't start Empire in the morning as my inet access was out of order.

sol_invictus -> RE: Empire Total War (3/6/2009 2:37:24 PM)

Well my installation and activation completed flawlessly and quickly; thank God.[&o] Played for five hours last night with only one crash. Game seems very stable and runs surprisingly well on my mediocre system on High Settings. Easily the best TW game since Shogun. Even better I would say. I would definitely recommend that after activation, Players run the game with Steam in Offline mode so that you can disconnect from the internet and turn off your Firewall, Anti-Virus, and any other internet security programs running in the background.

Hey Speedy,

Just looked at your screenshot. It is trying to download all your HL2 stuff at the same time also?

Hey, you're right. Good catch, I totally missed that. Might wanna look in to that, Speedy.

Prince of Eckmühl -> RE: Empire Total War (3/7/2009 2:33:11 PM)

Okay, I've purchased the game as well. The "Best Buy" version comes with two DVD and a license key. In spite of all the data capacity on the DVD, I still was required to download additional data from STEAM before I can play it. When I go to initialize the game, STEAM rears its head again. I don't like this, not one bit. Its a bunch of malarkey. My advice? Save your money.

Terminus -> RE: Empire Total War (3/7/2009 2:41:09 PM)

My advice is the exact opposite: calm down and let the steam from Steam wash over you, until you get to what is actually quite a good little game. Not bad at all.

I also bought from best buy. I wish I had read these posts before I did. I had the same experience you did. It does mention steam on the box,but you need a magnifying glass to see it!
This is total BS. What an invasion of my system! I swear I will never again buy a game that FORCES something like steam down your throat. Even if it runs problem free, the whole principle of it is offensive!
I now have a legally purchased game, but steam controls where and when I can play. Call me paranoid, but who knows what other information steam is getting from me!
If this is the future of computer games, I will stick to boardgames.

Please Matrix, don't ever go this route![:-]

Terminus -> RE: Empire Total War (3/7/2009 3:08:32 PM)

I'm not a big fan of this whole beef-up-the-copy-protection-schemes schtick that all the big publishers are on, but if you "didn't know this", then you've only got yourself to blame. It's been clearly said that ETW needed Steam activation many, many months ago.

If you want to stop buying computer games, that's your prerogative, but that won't stop stuff like Steam activation and Games for Windows Live.

Without intentionally trying to take this off topic, you do understand that privacy is no more? I mean there are hundreds of institutions who have a profile of you...worst offender is credit card. Everytime you use that to buy something, where you bought it, when you bought it, how much you spent - it's all stored. Supermarkets? They know what you buy!

I think I'll be picking this up tomorrow for my birthday...if T says it's good enough, that's fine for me! I have steam anyways, I just didn't want the download version!

Terminus -> RE: Empire Total War (3/7/2009 4:46:14 PM)

Don't give me that much credit, Judge. I'm nobody special.

However, I do like it (for now; I suspect it doesn't have much longevity). I played a couple of test games as Britain to get my hand in, and have now begun my first "real" game, this time as Prussia. Not so many overseas territories to mess with; I can get to those later.

Currently beating up Poland-Lithuania, and have just taken their minor ally, Saxony.
