kirk1227 -> disease and hospitals (4/2/2009 6:01:06 PM)

I believe the building of hospitals helps to keep down the amount of disase that an army gets in a paticular province. I have roughly 80-120,000 men in Annapolis and 4 or 5 hospitals but am still suffering somewhat heavily from disease. Is there some kind of ratio of hospitals to number of soldiers one should keep in mind to take the diseas level down to zero or some sort of minimum? Thanks and also thanks Ironclad for all your previous help to my earlier questions. kirk

I'm getting back into this awesome game after the new update, and I would also like to know the answer to this question. I thought that 5 hospitals would be more than enough!

Hospital - halves the disease losses in a province
Medical attribute - halves the losses to the units in the same container as the brigade with the attribute

Disease - Takes place in different provinces (random dice roll), if stricken, a brigade can take 0-28% damage from disease, every adjacant swamp adds 10% to this number. In autumn disease losses are reduced by 3/4 and in winter by 1/2.

So, if a province containing alot of men is stricken by disease, and have alot of swamps prepare for heavy losses.
One hospital+1 medical attribute in every container will reduce damage by 50% and then another 50% (does NOT equal 100%!!!).
From my understanding several hospitals will not reduce damage taken by disease, but will only help restoring disposition.

Please read p. 173, top:

Hospital: Halves the effects of disease within the province
This is in addition to Hospitals’ effects on Disposition, explained in the Intermediate Game chapter.

The effects are also explained on p. 175, A.9.3 Disease.

kirk1227 -> RE: disease and hospitals (4/19/2009 3:51:34 PM)

So if a brigade suffers 100 losses due to disease, the number would be increased to 110 if there were a swamp in the provice?  If there were a hospital in the province then the loss would have been 55(halved)?  If there had been a hospital and a hospital attribute, then the loss would have been approx. 27 or 28?(due to being halved again). Now, would that number keep getting halved the more hospitals and or attributes one has in the province? Lastly, how can you tell a swamp on the stategic map? What does it look like?  I can see what woods look like.  For example, in Annapolis, I would assume there are some swamps, but I dont see them(even though Im apparently looking right at them).  Thanks    kirk

kirk1227 -> RE: disease and hospitals (4/19/2009 5:11:30 PM)

in the example above, assume all units are in the same province AND the same container.

terje439 -> RE: disease and hospitals (4/19/2009 5:25:41 PM)

100 losses to disease + 10 for one swamp
hospital -(110/2)
Losses now 55
medical attribute -(55/2)
Total losses 27.5

More hospitals will not help, nor will more medical attributes unless you have several containers, in that case each container should have one brigade with medical attribute.

Disease losses will never (in my experience) be totally removed.

*edit* This is how I BELIEVE this works [:)]

                 Got it. Thanks Terje.  Looks like I wasted a lot of rescources on hospitals. Ah well, live and learn. But what does a swamp look like on the map?  kirk

terje439 -> RE: disease and hospitals (4/20/2009 9:48:35 AM)

Swamp:

                             You the man!  Thanks Terje:)

ptan54 -> RE: disease and hospitals (5/25/2009 3:59:04 AM)

Are hospitals only effective for troops in that province? E.G. Hospital in Richmond, only benefits troops in James River?

terje439 -> RE: disease and hospitals (5/25/2009 10:01:52 AM)

Depends upon what you mean by effective.
They only lower the effect of disease in THAT province, but it can restore disposition to two brigades within 4 provinces (by rail or river*), with the closest brigades targeted first.

*You have to be able to trace a path no longer than 4 provinces by rail or river. Since not all provinces are connected to the neighbouring province etc a brigade might be within 4 provinces of the hospital but still not be able to get it disposition restored due to the path being longer than 4 provinces.

ptan54 -> RE: disease and hospitals (5/26/2009 4:09:04 AM)

And having more than 1 hospital per city would be useless right? The effects are not cumulative.

terje439 -> RE: disease and hospitals (5/26/2009 10:57:35 AM)

Again a definition is needed [;)]
No bonus (atleast that is my understanding) towards lowering losses from disease, but 2 hospitals can help raise the disposition of 4 brigades (2x2).

hangarflying -> RE: disease and hospitals (5/26/2009 6:59:46 PM)

Regarding the Hospital attribute and container units. A brigade having a hospital attribute being attached to a Division. If that Division is attached to a corps, then to the other units in other division containers of that corps receive the benefit of the hospital attribute or does it only affect those units that are attached to the IMMEDIATE container that the brigade is in?

Thanks!

terje439 -> RE: disease and hospitals (5/26/2009 7:19:57 PM)

The medical attribute helps units in the same container as the unit with the attribute.
So if 1st brigade/1st div/1st corps/AoV has the medical attribute, only the 1st div units will benefit from it. If I placed this unit directly into the AoV, only other units placed directly into the AoV would benefit from it.

SlickWilhelm -> RE: disease and hospitals (9/9/2009 4:55:30 PM)

I've discovered that building multiple hospitals in the same province is a good way to raise the disposition of your troops. Most of my troops in Annapolis are zealous!

Of course, the South might still kick their butts, but at least they'll die happy & confident! [:D]

jeffk3510 -> RE: disease and hospitals (5/20/2010 12:41:02 AM)

I have one medical per unit per container....each division basically. I find this helps.
