Long Lance -> How to fight 144 PTs? (5/8/2009 8:10:56 PM)

I beefed up the Jap in the 1943 GC and managed to launch a counterattack.
What stands between me and a succesful 'liberation' of Guadalcanal is onehundredandfortyfour PTs.

How do I fight them? More precisely:

How do eliminate them fast an efficient?

USSAmerica -> RE: How to fight 144 PTs? (5/8/2009 8:14:44 PM)

Strafing and bombing at 100 feet.

I'm sure that breaks some House Rules! [:-]

String -> RE: How to fight 144 PTs? (5/8/2009 8:28:25 PM)

Or sending in several tf's fullof PG's and other odds and sods, exhausting their torp and ammo and then sweeping the area with a number of CL/DD TF's

SIGH...

Bringing up Yamato, Kongo, with Cruiser and Destroyer Escorts was not efficient.
I won by numers, but not really by quality[;)]

Would it be an idea to let my SCG attack during daylight, or would this only waste my ammunition?
Allied Airpower is not a probem anymore btw...

How fast could destoryed PTs be rebuilt btw? After a month?

Thanks for your answers

bradfordkay -> RE: How to fight 144 PTs? (5/8/2009 8:45:09 PM)

PTs arrive at a set rate. It will take him a long time to build that number back up (I believe - I've been playing CHS for so long that I have forgotten what stock is like).

Terminus -> RE: How to fight 144 PTs? (5/8/2009 9:28:18 PM)

crsutton -> RE: How to fight 144 PTs? (5/8/2009 10:54:46 PM)

"Off" Insect repellant.

Anthropoid -> RE: How to fight 144 PTs? (5/9/2009 2:56:48 AM)

Tactical nuklar artillery shells.

TulliusDetritus -> RE: How to fight 144 PTs? (5/9/2009 9:31:41 AM)

But the question is: how do you know 144 PTs are waiting for you? Or your opponent let you know with a sardonic laugh? "MwwwwhaHAHAhahahaHAHAHA! I'm waiting for you!"

Feinder -> RE: How to fight 144 PTs? (5/9/2009 10:01:05 AM)

I have no idea where the myth came from, but PTs do NOT respawn.
(other than the fact that PTs seem to crawl about like ants everywhere, even for the Allied player)

You kill them; they're dead.  Forever.

AGs, LCTs, LCVP, LCMs on the other hand, do re-spawn.

Depends what you mean by "respawn" - you get a certain number manufactured (depending on the date, scenario, etc.) that go into a pool... you then draw from the pool... this can be thought of as a kind "respawning", i suppose, but it is not the same as the USN carrier "respawn"... you can get duplicate PT numbers generated after a while if one has been sunk, the same number of PT boat will show up again... i suspect this lead to the term "respawning" after some players noticed that the same PT number had been sunk more than once.

Historiker -> RE: How to fight 144 PTs? (5/9/2009 3:02:15 PM)

Use your obsolete planes and let some fighter units conduct live training at 100ft naval attack. Meanwhile, conquere everything around the PT boats to isolate them. Also, attack the port of their base to destroy supplies and fuel to make them impotent.

Dili -> RE: How to fight 144 PTs? (5/9/2009 6:39:33 PM)

Let them wither in wine and use the place to train your planes in a turkey shot.

Long Lance -> RE: How to fight 144 PTs? (5/9/2009 7:45:20 PM)

Got it, the trick was to bash them with planes while they sit in port.
Strafing the when being in active TFs would have taken endlessly methinks.

Btw, houesrules are not hurt and I won't search for another opponent because it's vs. AI.

Just to clarify: You may get duplicate PT numbers means you may get a PT 109 after PT 109 has been sunk.
But the PTs that sank will never show up again, the total maxi. number of PTs in action will be reduced by the ones that were sunk?

TulliusDetritus -> RE: How to fight 144 PTs? (5/9/2009 8:41:08 PM)

Long Lance, I think the production of PTs (you can see the # produced in the ships list) will always be the same, no matter how many PTs were sunk.

Ah, it's vs the naughty AI, ok.

marky -> RE: How to fight 144 PTs? (5/9/2009 9:26:00 PM)

i remember that PTs were used in large numbers in the Med.

as for fighting them:

1. subs
2. fighters and fighter bombers at 100 naval attack
3. destroyers. DDs after all were originally Torpedo Boat Destroyers.

Feinder -> RE: How to fight 144 PTs? (5/9/2009 11:47:31 PM)

Be advised that, if you intend to kill PTs with surface combat units, that you should only attack them in daylight.  That means, don't use "mission speed" when attacking them (or you'll always show up at night).

At night, the PTs will start closer, and close faster, and most certainly will get to launch their torps.

In daylight, you'll usually start at about 22k yds, and the PTs will be forced to close to 8k yds, in which case you'll get a few rounds vs. them at range.  Not many, and not enough rounds at range, but a few none-the-less.

To arrive in daylight, you'll have to move at cruise or full speed, and, if your move indicator says something like 4/3, you'll need start at 7 hexes away from your target (you'll move 4 hexes at night, and 3 in the day, ending your movement and SC check in the enemy hex).

Be prepared to be frustrated tho.  PTs can be very nasty vs. your SC groups (as most folks in this thread are cautioning).  Frankly, most of my PBEM opponents don't mess the hornet's nest (even tho we have HRs limiting 12x PTs per hex); and that's probably what I'd do too.
