Those loading charts were interesting. Looks like it was a good day.[:)]

Both planes, (the B-17G and the B-24J) are fully operational and fly with passengers when they visit here and in other locations. (hard to believe but they say it costs $4000 an hour to operate them!)

Most, like myself [:(], however can't afford to cough up $400 for a flight......(and i hate to fly as it is!), so we pay $12 for a self guilded "tour"

Hopefully i didn't piss too many people off as i tried to snap as many photos as i could while slowly making my way through the planes.

On the gunners - it definately paid to be of medium to smaller stature. The 17 is far roomier for the waist gunners than on the 24..due to the port and starboard windows being more seperated. I'm sure it was done both ways.....kneeling and standing.

i got to fly in the 24 it is a little scarry walking through the bombay walkway while in the air. but the flight is so much fun.

thx for posting these.

No smoking in the bomb bay [;)]

Did I see a F-16 indoors or did I misidentify something?

What took the cake for me was that German DR-1 painted black. That was awesome!!!

no F-16. There's an F-4, F-14 and F-104 though in the photos. [:)]

I don't recall an F-104. There was an F-5 hanging from the ceiling of the main gallery. If I remember right, it's an F-5A.

Bill

There was a F-104 there two years ago . I used to visit it frequently when I was a member of the MOF. (it's a truly gorgeous airplane!).[:D]

There still is an F-104 there; in a NASA paint scheme, IIRC.

I tried getting into the ball turret on a B-17 when I was 12. I couldn't fit then. I also managed to wiggle into the turret on a TBM at that age. It was a tight fit. I wouldn't want to try and get out of that thing in a hurry!

The staggered waist guns were made standard on the late G. I believe it was partway through the G production run that the waist gun positions were enclosed. The early Gs and other versions had the waist guns directly across from one another.

BTW, the reason 909 survived is that it was involved in nuclear tests in the early 50s. It had to sit out on the range for a while to cook out and by the time the radiation levels were safe, there was enthusiasm about saving WW II aircraft.

I had the pleasure and the honor to speak to both the gentleman on the left. Both served in the BG the 24 flew in, the farthest left person was a tail gunner who flew 13 missions, and the gentleman next to him flew 30 missions as a Ventral ball gunner. It might be seen as cheesy but i gushed at these two, shaking their hands and telling them how much it impressed me to be able to talk to two guys who actually served aboard one of these bombers in wartime. As is their wont, both scoffed at the notion that they did anything special.....but i'll never stop being impressed. Its one thing to read about it....to debate and discuss it and sound knowledgable......these guys didn't care about who's plane has a bigger appendange than the other....they just had a job to do...and they did it. Very cool to hear them relate their stories.

The guys on the right are wearing B-15 flight jackets. The collars look too new to be originals though. I have my father's, the collar is a couple of shades lighter than those two.

yeah but there is a big sign on them that say do not step on them. because they are designed to give way if you jump on them(ie in a bailout senario). same thing with the front wheel well doors. also when you are flyng since the airplane isn't so much sealed the air rushes through the front turret and down the length of the aircraft so it is a bit windy.

Nikademus -> RE: Collins Foundation B-17G interior (6/23/2009 4:38:20 PM)

jumping up and down on the bombbay doors doesn't sound like a good idea to begin with.... [:D]
