Hartmann -> CS sunk in port during repair (5/28/2002 1:50:48 PM)

Probably the following is intended, but still I report it just in case:

I had CS Nishin with 75% floatation damage plus fire move into Shortland for repairs. First, the fires were put out, then the damage went down to about 70. Then, nothing happend for a while. Suddenly, within a few turns, the floatation dammage went up again and the CS sank (with all the planes on bord, of course :(). I never had that phenomenon yet. On the contrary: even critical floatation dammage was always repaired nicely while in port (Shortland is at level 6).

So what happened here? Maybe some engineer accidentally pulled the plug on the pumps? :D

It seems that any time the flotation damage of a ship is above 75, there's a good chance it will progressively worsen and the ship sink even while in port.

So far, that's happened to 2CV's for me. :(

US Airstrikes against the port. Those airstrikes seemes to be very effective!

There were no airstrikes against the port during that time. But I guess von Murrin is probably right with his conjecture. Too sad to loose an already "saved" ship like that ...

Ron Saueracker -> Ever play Gary's "Guadalcanal Campaign"? (5/28/2002 2:26:53 PM)

At least it got to port. For some reason, in GG's GC, any ship larger than a DD that was at 50% damage or more moved at 5knts only and blew up within a couple of turns. In all the years I played GC, I can only remember one instance where a ship made it back. KERF*****GBOOM!!!!!!! AAARGH! :D

von Murrin -> (5/28/2002 2:35:05 PM)

I'd have to say that I see this a lot. The reason I mentioned the CV's is because those two incidents had me yelling at my monitor. :D

I've only played as the US so far, so it's pretty much guaranteed that my ships will take damage, and that it will be flotation the majority of the time.

Here's how damage seems to work:

If you have a ship with fire damage, that will be reduced or removed first. While that's happening, the flotation damage will be checked or slowed, depending on the fire damage. The more fire and system damage, the less likely it is that flotation damage will be checked, and the more likely it will be for it to rise.

If you can put out the fire before the flotation get above 65, you've a very good chance to save the ship. 65 to 75, and it's much more likely to sink the ship. In my experience, once you go over 75, the ship is as good as gone if you can't get it to port in less than 3 turns.

Here's a little formula that seems to work pretty well for me:

100 - (Flotation damage + (System damage/10)) + 1 for each hex to the nearest port = Chance for survival.

So a ship with 40 sys damage and 65 flot damage that's 10 hexes from the nearest port has a 21% chance to make it.
100 - (65 + (40/10)) + 10 = 21

Can you tell my ships get hammered every now and then? :D

mogami -> every ship for it's self (5/28/2002 3:01:44 PM)

Hi, don't have damaged ships travel together. After my carrier battle with Sinjen I kept Lex and Chicago together and lost them both. Chicago slowed Lex down and after Chicago sank Lex 30 miles from port sank. If I had ran her at full speed from the first she would have made it to port. (her flt damage was not that bad after battle 46 but she was an inferno, by the time the fires were put out she was over 70 flt damage. for 3 days her max speed was over 15 knots but I held her back to Chicagos 8. I think she would have made it 3-4 days before she sank. There were lots of Jap subs in the area (I sank 1 with a force of DD's sent from Noumea with follow TF orders.) Now it is every ship for it's self after battles with the most valuable getting the escorts.
