Them be trip 5/38 twins on the butt Steve [;)]. Looks more like an Atlanta or Oakland class, pic taken from the director platform.

mutterfudder -> RE: Name This AE...350 (6/16/2009 8:56:42 PM)

Flu season?

R8J -> RE: Name This AE...350 (6/16/2009 8:57:13 PM)

An Atlanta class CL. I have not a clue as to which ship.

It looks like one of the crew may have the swine flu or a Michael Jackson look alike contest is about to begin.

Fallschirmjager -> RE: Name This AE...350 (6/16/2009 9:05:21 PM)

Does cordite or whatever the USN used, irritate the nasal cavities?

R8J -> RE: Name This AE...350 (6/16/2009 9:21:19 PM)

My first guess for the use of the masks would be falsh burn protection.

Guess these funny little masks will help a lot then. [:D]

bigjoe96912 -> RE: Name This AE...350 (6/17/2009 12:11:30 AM)

San Juan

Hornblower -> RE: Name This AE...350 (6/17/2009 2:42:17 AM)

Yep San Juan at Santa Cruz

whippleofd -> RE: Name This AE...350 (6/17/2009 2:47:52 AM)

Looks like they still have the 1.1 AA's aboard also.

Whipple

greg_slith -> RE: Name This AE...350 (6/17/2009 3:23:38 AM)

I think the 1.1's are quad 40mm's. Are those DC's along the rail?

DivePac88 -> RE: Name This AE...350 (6/17/2009 4:04:54 AM)

Yes USS San Juan at Santa Cruz, from a famous set of photos.

EDIT:

Not sure if that is 1.1" or a 40 mm quad Bofors... [&:]

rtrapasso -> RE: Name This AE...350 (6/17/2009 12:17:10 PM)

According to one caption i found (while looking for something else) for this pic:

"Note flash-protection clothing worn by the men, 1.1" quadruple anti-aircraft machine gun mount in left center, 5"/38 guns beyond, and depth charges on "K-gun" throwers by the main deck edge."

John Lansford -> RE: Name This AE...350 (6/17/2009 12:20:02 PM)

I thought the 1.1" barrels were aligned vertically instead of horizontally.

Different models maybe - the British version seen here:

EDIT: This came up on a search for 1.1" AA gun, but i don't think it is 1.1"... [8|]

rtrapasso -> RE: Name This AE...350 (6/17/2009 12:27:10 PM)

Here is a pic of 1.1" mount on the Hornet in May 1942 - note the lack of "cones" on the end of the gun in comparison with the current pic:

USS San Juan (CL-54), it is[:)]

..............

Crewmen at general quarters, while the ship was at sea, circa 1942. View looks aft from the after superstructure.
Note flash-protection clothing worn by the men, 1.1" quadruple anti-aircraft machine gun mount in left center, 5"/38 guns beyond, and depth charges on "K-gun" throwers by the main deck edge.

You forgot the little smiley after the last bit! [;)] (see post 19)

Fallschirmjager -> RE: Name This AE...350 (6/17/2009 8:16:57 PM)

Am I reading that right, a depth charge on a CL. Or are these different depth charges than anti sub depth charges?

Terminus -> RE: Name This AE...350 (6/17/2009 9:16:24 PM)

The Atlantas had depth charges and sonar. The Japs put depth charges on HEAVY cruisers (and carriers, for that matter).

The British pom-poms were 2pdr/40mm. The ones in Robert's picture are .50cal MG's, though.

The guns in Brady's pic ARE 1.1in; you can tell by the arrangement of barrels (four in a row, rather than two by two, as in a quad Bofors installation).

Golly, not sure. Could be Anti-Tank DCs, maybe Anti-Air DCs. Not sure.

Sorry, Nik just sent me a note. They are anti Goa'uld Deathglider weapons. Sorry for the confusion.

Actually, just now recalled that there WERE anti-tank DCs - used by TBFs in North Africa invasion against French armor! [X(]

But they were not on ship mounts, though. [:)]

There are also those strange tubes that go over the gun next to the right...
