Torsten, I believe you said you were trying to download with a very slow connection, using some type of download manager program. Matrix has recommended not to use any type of download manager, as it may cause problems. Will you be able to access a faster connection anytime soon?

I'll be at home in about a week. So at the end of next week, I shall finally have it.
My connection is at about max. 24kbyte/sec now. Unfortunately, my Laptop wasn't "format c:" since I have it which is about two years now, IIRC. Consequently, Dial-up connections brake down quite frequently and the GPRS connection I have now turns somehow to "just local" from "local and internet" sometimes.
If I download without a manager, just via firefox, this should end the download without any chance to resume. As the download takes me about 6-10 hours, I have to use a manager.

When Free download manager was able to resume the download this morning, I was shocked to see that it immediatly began to split the file (still at 199MB 43%) again. I stopped and managed to turn it to just one download. This "worked", if you describle holding the connection at 0 bytes as download. 5 minutes later, it broke down again and I'm told again that my username/Password is wrong.
So the multiple connections were identified as attack - again! [:@]

I guess I'll have to let it download with multiple connections tomorrow which will hopefully mean another 40% before I'm kicked again. The 17% rest have to be downloaded on saturday - if everything works...

Or maybe I'll find someone who tells me how Star Downloader or Free download manager has to be set to guarantee that this won't happen again... [:(]

Well, its really frustration, but finally, I'll have the game somewhen... [>:]

USSAmerica -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/30/2009 11:33:47 AM)

That's a tough situation, but at least you know you can get AE downloaded in a week, as the worst case.

Just think how much more you will appreciate it after anticipating for so long.  [:)]

PM me. If you want I can burn a copy of the .exe to a CD and post it to you. You'll need your own installation key though.

Good thoughts, guys, but I believe by the time it could make it to Historiker where he is by post, he will be home and able to download it. [:)]

PT boats seem very effective but reloading their torpedoes seems to be tougher.[:)]

Well, I don't know if this will help, but it might.

Years ago, when I was on dialup, I ran across a download manager called "getright" (you can dl a free trial version at the getright Web site) that controls the link between you and the dl server. If the link is broken for any reason, you just restart getright, and it treconnects and resumes where the dl left off.

When I bought WitP, my server would log me off every six hours, and the download took 27. Getright enabled me to get the job done. I thought it to be an excellent product.

-oh. If the current version has a setting for single or multiple streams, be sure to set it for single streaming.

Well, that's certainly going to be a problem; thankfully, I still have seven slightly-used old destroyers with low mileage who can at least be expected to die gallantly.

Just slightly off kilter is all

pasternakski -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/30/2009 3:54:36 PM)

Dawgs, I won't be hanging around here making a fool of myself for a good long time. I have a summer recreation project with a few old friends that will keep me busy until September, and then, I have accepted a one-year teaching appointment at the university I retired from a couple of years ago, so I have to leave my cozy retirement digs behind in the hands of another friend and colleague until I can get back to being the lazy old retired slut that I have become.

Besides, I made a pact with myself some time ago that I would never again buy a computer wargame until at least six months after its release, so, as far as I'm concerned, AE doesn't even exist until the end of January.

See all you maniacs later, maybe.

Welcome back, Pas! How was your trip? [:)]

Torsten, this sounds like just the answer for you, particularly if you can still set it for single stream. [:)]

Now I understand. Phase I, indoctrinate young, malleable minds . . . . then Phase II.

Hope you at least wander in occasionally until January rolls around.
