AW1Steve -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (8/7/2009 5:32:33 PM)

My favorite British accent is still the Geordie. I had a class mate from Newcastle that no one could understand. I often found myself translating (the little bit that I understood) for my other British friends. When ever they needed an actor to play a troll (Tolkien was big that year) someone would always say "I know, lets get Duncan to play the role!". I notice that in movies they tend to use what seems to be a "east London" accent for trolls, orc's etc. [:D]

Did you just use the word "bloke"? I don't believe you're strictly speaking allowed to, not being of the British persuasion...[:'(]

Terminus -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (8/7/2009 8:38:23 PM)

Originally British, and like the Canadians, the Aussies are still basically Brits, what with the Queen on their currency and whatnot...

anarchyintheuk -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (8/7/2009 8:39:01 PM)

Smiley error.

Mynok -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (8/7/2009 8:47:56 PM)

Well....mostly because the Brits shipped a huge number of their nastier Irishmen to Oz...it was a sort of penal colony.

Be sure to take a magic marker and write "port" on your left hand and "starboard" on your right. [:D]

Hey .. hey .. hey .. Mars boy. That Martian atmosphere has dulled your thinking.

The Brits shipped a huge number of the best and brightest Irishmen (the ones that told them to go flog a rope) to Georgia first. Then, after we told 'em to bugger off, to OZ. Why else did OZ make Ted Turner an honorary Aussie?

There's 2 kinds of people in this world; sailors and not-sailors. There's 2 kinds of sailors in this world; us and everybody else. There's only a few kinds of 'us' in this world; Aussies, Kiwis, Americans from highly selective parts of the country, and maybe a Russian or Argentine, or a South African. Ok, there's a couple French, and a really good German. But in the only world that really matters, the real Pro's From Dover are those nastier Irishmen from the penal colony.

btw, ya want us to put some shrimp on the barbie for ya?

That's ok. I'm not Aussie, and I'm sure neither of us would claim to be Brits; we just remember from whence the penal ships originated.

All I'm saying is that one man's "nasty, thieving, Irish transportee" is another man's ancestor, who founded polities that are frankly superior to those expressed by their purported jailors.

[Edit] And a damn sight better sailors, to boot. [:D]

What do you mean MArtin?

BTW, I was always told that I speak with American accent (and not British) in all accoasions... [:D]

Leo "Apollo11"

Every time I go away (mostly to North America it has to be said) there is always at least one person who hears us talking and wanders over with what seems to be either an impression of Dick Van Dyke circa Mary Poppins or Queen Victoria circa 1900. [:D] And did I mention they are terrible attempts. [;)]

Don't feel bad, every Brit I've known here either thinks North Americans talk like Texans, Californians or , God Forbid, Archie Bunker style New Yorkers. Even they don't say "Turdy-turd street". Only Brits trying to be NYers do. Your lot has never heard of Canada , or even discovered that there ARE other parts of the USA. On the other hand , it's easy to sound like a Londoner....Just sound like you are from somewhere else! [:D]

no people try to talk like texans and try to have a texan accent and people from texas just look at them with a puzzled look. we really don't have that much of an accent the only thing we do different is use the word yall. and actors trying to do a texas accent are the worst. james vander(&#*(& in varsity blues is a prime example of this.
