Solomon Islands (July 14th 1944)

Allied troops have been building up at Guadalcanal area.

The latest landings were made at Munda and the base was overrun on 13th of July 1944. There was not much in terms of enemy forces.

IJA did conduct some raids againts our carriers. Most likely these planes did take off around Rabaul area.

That "offensive" was short lived and japanese pilots were shot down in numbers.

Personal estimate is that he lost 100-200 aircraft and shot down only few allied fighters.

In next few days we will land troops at Shortlands. I expect our forces to overrun any enemy opposition swiftly.

I need to take Rabaul out and have troops already trained for the mission so that is definately happening soon.

All in all I'am moving forward and shipping resources to the area. We need these in future offensives for sure and now we have almost connected CenPac and South Pacific fronts.

Aleutians (14th july 1944)

This area has been quiet after those "carnage" carrier duels which stopped the japanese advance in this region.

Now it has become the time to invade Dutch Harbour and few surrounding bases here.

The invasion has actually started on 13th July 1944 and it seems that the base will fall within days.

I have send some allied carriers and surface combat ships here in order to gain these objectives.

We will take another strategic look around here once Umnak Island and Dutch Harbour are retaken.

Burma (september 17th 1944)

The RAF and US bombers have been deployed into action and they made the surrender of Moulmein a bit faster than expected.

There are some B29's operating from India involved along with heavy numbers of 4E bombers.

I must say that the supply situation definately is important here since the roads etc make it hard to keep enough resources within troops.

The Commonwealth troops clashed with enemy forces at Moulmein and it really was bloody mess. This ordeal took around 2 weeks to complete due japanese heavy lvl 5 forts.

Here are last two combat reports when the base was overrun...

That was just the last 3 days worth of fighting. Plenty of those before that.

I will continue to push further south towards Malaya and Bangkok.

The blue arrows show intended routes forward.

Nothern Pacific (September 17th 1944)

The liberation of Aleutians is slowly going forward.

We have now have control of Umnak Island & Dutch Harbour which we lost earlier in the war.

The recon flights indicate small or medium resistance in the nearby bases.

I'am keeping allied carrier TF's here just in case some enemy shipping do show up.

There is an paratrooper action scheduled within next few days once I get those transport ac's into area.

aztez -> RE: September 1944 (2/28/2011 10:20:38 PM)

Southern Pacific (September 17th 1944)

Allied forces have invaded Munda and Shortlands and are closing into Rabaul area.

I think most of the enemy heavy infantry units are gone since Port Moresby seems to be almost abandoned.

There are reported 9 units at Rabaul which most likely some of them are elements of withdrawn unit.

We will know this soon enough since the invasion armada is closing in.

There enemy airfields with bombers a bit further up the island chain. This why the operation is covered with major allied carrier TF's.

I also intend to launch heavy bombing campaign againts those bases with B29's which are now deployed.

Last few days I have severeal sweep missions againts Truk. Dave seems to be evacing some of his forces there and want get my lba fighters into action as well.

The losses in just couple of days fighting have been 100 for the allied side and 200 enemies downed.

A lot more action heating up here as expected.

This battle over the skies will continue next turn. The recon indicated some 100 fighters still at Bangkok.

There was over 200 before these raids started happening so I gather more than 50% of his fighters there have been wiped out.

I'am still resting my ground units couple of days before pushing forward. The battle of Moulmein took toll on our forces eventhough they were victorious.

Southern Pacific (29th of August 1944)

Allied invasion fleet has arrived at Rabaul and started unloading troop into beaches.

The japanese garrison av was around 200 and I do expect the base to fall next turn.

Resistance has been moderate there but japanese submarine managed to put 2 torpedoes into BB Colorado. The battleship sunk beneath the waves taking all the sailors with her.

The Manus airfield north of Rabaul was hit by B29's and we torched some aircraft in the fields. The main thing though was IJA's bomber efforts were distrupted.

My recon flights spotted possible japanese carriers west of Truk but so far they haven't intervened.

Here are the first 2 rounds of battles at Rabaul...

Dave is definately pulling troops out via air transports here. There are now 23 units left and we started up with 36 units.

So far I have kept my 4E bombers away from action but will launch them soon againts this base. I have moved +100 of them in the region.

The airwar has been very intense in past weeks. Intel screen shows +17 000 enemy planes destroyed.

This gives me an nice forward base with big port and airfield.

Initially I was going to bypass this whole area but changed my mind and I think it was the correct the decision.

Elsewhere Bangkok and Truk carnage continued. In total +400 aircraft was lost last turn.

I'am going to keep at it since have plenty in reserves. However Dave might not since first time I spotted below 100 fighters at those bases.

Burma (November 1st 1944)

This has been bloody in terms of airwar.

In past few turns I have bombed Bangkok and japanese have launched againts Rangoon.

All in all I think combined losses have been 700-800 aircraft.

It still seems japanese airforce is in good shape despite losing almost 20 000 aircraft.

I'am having hard time of getting 2:1 or 3:1 odds. Most are now maybe around 1,5:1 in favour of allies.

The problem with that is the production. Dave can choose what aircraft to produce while I'am stuck on what I get on the map.

I have shipped a lot of supplies and units into Burma and soon we will start marching towards the valleys near Bangkok.

Marianas (November 1st 1944)

I have flown extensive recon missions in this area. The map below shows what kind of enemy forces are garrisoning these bases.

Also there are some 40 000 enemy units at Truk which is an Atoll and I wohn't hit it. Instead will bypass that base.

Allied invasion fleet is already in motion and will arrive at Marianas in next few days.

I will land at Saipan and Tinian. Each of the bases will be hit by +100 000 men.

The allied navy is fully supporting these landings which need to be succesfull.

The amount of enemy LBA aircraft is 300-350 planes if recon is to be expected.

No doubt he can fly in extra from nearby areas and I'am expecting KB to show up here as well.

However this goes it definately will be bloody...

witpqs -> RE: November 1944 (5/22/2011 6:22:21 PM)

Truk is not an atoll in game terms. Truk is (IIRC) jungle terrain, and size 3 (60,000 capacity). The automatic landing shock attacks are for 1) all Atoll terrain, and 2) size 1 (6,000 capacity) and 2 (30,000 capacity) islands regardless of terrain.

I'm glad you reactivated your AAR - Your fans missed you! [:)]

aztez -> RE: November 1944 (5/23/2011 6:22:26 PM)

witpqs:  Thanks and appreciated the comment.

The RL has kept me busy and I will keep this AAR running to the bitter end.

Last turn did not have much action itself allthough my invasion fleets got discovered. That was not good but well what can you do.

I will push ahead with the invasions since I need to do something now.. not months ahead.

Also spotted again 1-2 ships TF's around Saipan where he has 200 fighters placed. Well, that is an game mechanic ambush to me so told Dave that the TF's of such kind should have 6 ship minium.

He is trying to juice my bombers into strikes againts non-essential targets which I hate to see still in the game. This happened in Truk region and now it needs to be stopped.

Anyone starting an PBEM or WITPAE game I would say these two things.

1) Don't agree to have the option where you can adjust changing of aircraft type.
2) The pilot training is definately burden in this game and I suggest that only general training option should be used.

Those two things can adjust/break the game into fantasy land.

I will do an update once our fleets near the Marianas. (Allthough it came into mind maybe divert them towards Iwo Jima region. The problem being though that he holds Marcus and Wake Island. Hard to get LBA fighters into the base)

Try doing this while playing scen#2 where the Japanese resources are extreme. I am facing hundreds of Japanese land based fighters and bombers-not to mention more trained Japanese pilots than he will ever need...It is quite a challenge.

If you have not updated to the latest beta patch (very nice stuff there) then you might want to try it out. The Allies get some help as you can now (for a big PP cost) assign navy fighters to a marine unit. This really helps as the marine fighter units are always short of planes and you can now give some of them hellcats which are usually in plentiful supply.

Thanks Aztez for all the hard work you've put into this AAR. Just read it right from the beginning - great read.

No! I have such desires to do this with scenario 2!

As for the patch! We are still running the last official one. Most likely will upgrade when the Beta phase ends.

rtrm: Welcome to the forums! Also, appreciated the kind words.

You can keep on following until the 1946's since this is definately not ending before that date.

Damn.. lost way too many aircraft on non-existant ships. Also, it seems that Pagan also has around 20 units stacked in the beaches at Marianas.

After looking at the strenght, fatigue and our losses it has left me no other option but to cancel those landings at Tinian + Saipan.

Instead I will divert these troops towards Truk and invade base without the troops being prepped for it.

This really well truly sucks but if look at the losses on the aircraft screen you will get the picture why this has to be done.

Eventhough I really don't need the base in terms of ports I need the base for advance airfield.

Another bump on the comeback journeys. The odds shifted at Marianas last turn.

I should have 1300-1600av there within next few days and I think that will more than enough to dislodge those japanese.

RAF and US airforces will provide bombing support from interior Burma.

Once Chiang Mai is secured I will start advancing towards the plains near Bangkok.

The airwar over Bangkok has been extremely fierce. I have lost the count of how many planes both sides have lost there.

It is definately 4 digit numbers and no sign of japanese giving up the skies above Bangkok. Instead they have made raids towards Rangoon.

Truk (November 11th 1944)

As stated earlier we had to postpone the Marianas offensive and instead we diverted those troops towards Truk.

The invasion begun on november 10th 1944 and the first 40 000 are now in the beaches.''

The losses regarding transport ships were less than expected on the 1st wave of the ships.

I have plenty of surface combat ships and carriers providing cover for the operations.

There are also LBA bombers flying into Truk from Rabaul and Marshalls.

Next turn I will land extra 40 000 men into the base and start soon hammering those defenders.

I have quite a few troops in the reserve just incase the defenders try to be too stubborn.

Here is the ground combat situation after the initial landings...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ground combat at Truk (112,108)

CaptBeefheart -> RE: November 1944 (5/31/2011 1:01:02 AM)

Aztez: Good to see you are still going here. I hope you've got other ground units on those ships there or it could be a tough slog for Truk.

Good luck!

Cheers,
CC

aztez -> RE: November 1944 (6/12/2011 3:37:41 PM)

Thanks Cody! Appreciated!

Well, the luck factor is something I do not have in this game.

I don't have the actual turn file so this update goes without the pictures.

We will run the latest news theatre by theatre.

Pacific reports (November 12th - 25th 1944)

South Pacific

The landings at Truk have come to an grinding halt for the allied side.

Japanese defenders have upgraded their fort levels to 9 there. The initial assaults showed adjusted defensive value of +20 000 for the enemy.

As if this was not bad enough game mechanics game into play. I have +40 000 units of supply currently there for the troops but somehow it is not divided.

Thus one single infantry division holds 95% of teh supplies landed on the beaches.

I have already withdrawn few units out of Truk and unless I can get those supplies working as intended than will forfeit this landing and remove rest of the units as well.

This ofcourse is costly endevour since the coastal guns are taking toll on the transports.

I could summarize the above: "Sometimes I really hate this damn game..."

We have started invasion north of Rabaul at Manus.

It seems allied troops are gaining upper hand here and expect that base to fall within next couple of turns.

Burma / India

There have been ground combat fought at Chiang Mai and the forts have been reduced to lvl 1 now.

The resistance is still very stubborn so hard to say how long the enemy can hold out here.

Japanese have landed paratroopers into vicinity of Lashio and we are working hard to dislodge those intruders.

This "drop" is an annoyance more than anything else.

At Colombo RN carriers and warships were ambushed by IJN. The results were not pretty at all as you can expect.

I cannot confirm the actual status of these ships but it seems that many of them are sunk or either very badly hit. Considering the date of things that means they are out of the war for good.

So that is that.. I could be happy about the aircraft / pilot losses for the japanese but since the game really does not model how hard it is maintain quality pilots it comes next to nothing.

Thus far I have shot down over +20 000 enemy aircraft and have not seen any diffrence on their numbers around the map whatsoever.

Few more ships not to worry about at least.

China

Not much happening. I still thinking about launching an offensive here even with poor supply situations.

Basically don't have much to lose in this game.

Aleutians

At the moment building up and garrisoning the bases I have recaptured from Dave.

The weather most likely prevents any major operations in this region.

crsutton -> RE: November 1944 (6/12/2011 8:58:46 PM)

Ouch! That hurt. It just goes to show that with Japanese carriers still afloat you can never relax. Got to give it to your opponent that was a brilliant raid.

I just wish Allied AA was not so useless. At this stage of the game you should have at least splashed a lot more attackers.

It has been a while since you reported. What are your carrier losses vs your opponents to date in your game?

zzodr -> RE: November 1944 (6/15/2011 3:58:51 AM)

Things are looking up for scuba diving off Colombo... bad luck Aztez!
