jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (1/18/2010 9:02:44 AM)

Adak airfield is still open (57 Service but only 16 runway damage), with forcasts of Thunderstoms the fighters and Avengers will stay!

Supply is 44k, AV is 417 behind level 3.5 forts.

Cheers

Rob

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (1/20/2010 6:29:16 AM)

22-23 Jun 1942

Subs
Lots of action! Around Adak we get Akagi in our sights, a hit, no bang :(

SS Cuttlefish was given an aggresive commander and he attampts to rampage, lots of attacks but no hits. She is probably out of Torps now :(

Near Toyohara SS Growler tries for a hat-trick, 1 confirmed sunk xAKL, 1 heavily damaged, 1 hit but no bang :( Almost got there. More resources lost to the Home Islands :)

In the DEI subs aroung Palembag are being prosecuted heavily, time to move again :(

Off Babeldoab we attack a convoy but don't get any bangs. (According to sigint this convoy may be carrying the 16th Inf regiment to Babeldoab. We have several subs in the area.)

Burma
No change. Allied airpower rules the skies :)

DEI
They have pulled back from Medan.

Philippines
They have started bombing the last stronghold in the area at Zamboanga to little effect. AV is 138 behind 2.8 forts, 500 supply. Could be an annoyance to them.

SWPAC

Netties are hammering our forces at Finshaven badly. In return we molest Lae, including TINAS bringing in reinforcements... or are they pulling out?

Luganville makes a level 4 airfield. Devastators are based here, fighters soon, then a B-17 Sqn to hit Tulagi (as much as a feint as anything else). A third US regiment should be unloading now bringing AV up to around 400.

NORPAC
Thanks to bad weather KB doesn't launch once in 2 days. A NICE bonus (good place to fight when you don't have air superiority). Our Avengers attack BB Yamashiro twice for 1 hit and no bangs :(

Forces continue to unload and we hit a number of xAK, trashing them. Looks like it is just supplies. We cause around 300 cas on day 1 and 400 on day 2 with a lot of disablements. AV is about 450 vs 700 against us. Supplies are good (40+K), and the airfield should be fully up again now, may have even dug some more forts (getting close to level 4 I hope).

Another two days of bad weather would be very nice for us!.

Cheers

Rob

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (1/20/2010 7:04:21 AM)

Thinking and Talking, that is what Tony and I have been doing. In particular what are their future intentions?

Burma
They have pulled all forces back beyound the Irrawaddy, (well except for the last two units we are hammering daily with over 100 aircraft).

Why?
We think they are trying the Mongol horse archer trick of mock flight. Pulling our forces forward, having them move, exposing us to their (largely) intact full strength air force. Hoping our forces are unprepped, then launching a 4 div counter attack...

OTOH we can't let the opportunity past us politically (after all this was Slims original plan) to take some nice bases.

So THE PLAN (TM) is to advance quickly with light forces. We have halted at Katha and build that base up though in a more Montgomery methodical approach, before stick our heads in too far. Haveing said that we have a few bdes 100% prepped already for Shwebo, but they won't stand in front of a strong Japanese attack.

The problem is we continue to loose Brit squadrons... although looking at Tony's side of the map for the first time in a while I think he has plenty :) But air replacements are VERY low.

Cheers

Rob

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (1/20/2010 7:29:58 AM)

DEI
Here we think they are firmly on the defence and moving forces into position while they can. Kendari appears to be the main base (3 port 6 afld) as we have seen lots of shipping in and out of there, and have hit at least two TK's in the last month.

Ambon and Koepang appear to be the outposts, both level 4 afld with no port development.

This makes sense and is what I would do.

They are still cleaning up dot bases to stop infiltration tactics.

Our biggest weakness is recon aircraft. Cats are doing well keeping reasonable track of shipping but ground forces are complete unkowns.

Overall this area is quite for both sides, and is likely to continue so for several months as neither of us have the strength to advance. (That could change if they take Adak Island tough).

They will react aggresively and have a number of warships in the area, and 2-3 Daitai of Netties.

Sometime in 1943 we aim to take Ambon and Timor. Once the coursair arrives in numbers probably. Until then we will apply presure via (hopefully) taking Aru Is.

Our position is strong and secure based on Darwin and Katherine. We are starting to secure bases like Whyndham and Broome to act as sub and search bases.

CaptBeefheart -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (1/20/2010 11:43:01 AM)

I've come back to this excellent AAR to see how you guys are doing, and it looks like "reasonably well" is the answer. Could you show screenies of your aircraft replacements and top pilots? One thing that seems a lot different from stock is lack of replacement aircraft, especially SBDs and F4Fs.

Thanks, I'll post screen shots when I get the next turn, hopefully later today.

We have done well, taking the initiative in a few areas from the Japanese, without loosing to much. A lot of this has been becuase Joe and Nik have concentrated on conserving their airforce, which has allowed us some respite to organise and train ours. We are now at air parity, but IF they push it they can probably wrest it back still. A lack of aircraft replacements is our biggest liability.

I'll be interested to see if the short term loss (in terms of not getting that far territory wise) will be turned around in the long term by maintenance of the capability of the Japanese air forces.

Cheers

Rob

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (1/20/2010 9:16:25 PM)

SWPAC
We assess that the enemy are fully on the defensive here due to a lack of "ommph" in terms of CV/BB force to close bases.

Reading between the lines it looks like they intend to hold Truk and Babeldoab in strength and they will be the main bases in the area. Rabaul and Hollianda the outposts. While they are attempting to deny us Lae, Buna and the Solomons using light expendable forces.

Our intent is to close up on the enemy at PM (Complete), Wau (underway), Buna (an Aussie Motor Bde is marching overland here from PM).

Luganville is almost secure with around 400 AV, 4 Afld and 3 forts. Efate will be built as a fighter transfer strip to Fiji.

I'm not sure if we should start planning for Tulagi, or just go round its, or go to Ndeni.

Cheers

Rob

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (1/20/2010 9:22:57 PM)

SOPAC
The enemy are purely on the defensive here. The only base is Tarawa which is lightly held and not developed. The other islands appear to be undeveloped.

On our side Fiji is secure as is Pago Pago. Lots of troops at Fiji as the point of entry into the lower SWPAC and into SOPAC.

Aircraft are still a problem.

Canton Is is the most forward outpost lightly held by a baseforce.

I AM thinking of trying for Tabituea (unrestricted island sth of Tarawa). I have some forces on Hawaii preping for it... but it is a big step, and without a lot more aircraft, or a victory at sea over some of the Japanese CV's I'm not that keen. No point in sticking your head in to a noose when you don't have to.

Cheers

Rob

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (1/20/2010 9:33:45 PM)

Centpac
Here too the enemy are on the defensive.

We have done nothing in the area either except outposts like Johnston with search aircraft. I should have said that most of the outposts in the SOPAC and CENTPAC are lvl 3 forst or heading to 4.

We have no plans in this area at the moment apart from securing the sea line of communicationsto NZ and Australia.

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (1/20/2010 9:39:41 PM)

NORPAC
Where all the action is!

It looks like they are hell bent on taking Adak, and are now starting to get close to the ground force ratio's they need (I think they need at least 1 more div).

We will fight on the ground and air to keep them occupied here as long as possible. While it would be nice to hold the place realistically we can't while they continue to use the entire fleet.

But this action is why the have been quiet in the DEI, SWPAC and SOPAC, their fleet is fully committed. As a consequence I think we have reached the Japanese high tide mark.

Once Adak is taken we don't expect them to push on, but are preparing in case they do.

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (1/20/2010 9:42:06 PM)

China
We have done well here as Joe and Nik really haven't pushed, very gentlemanly of them considering some of the known issues in this area (and we are still on the original build). We aren't pushing back either. BUT the Chinese forces are growing in strength.

I think this will continue to be relatively quiet.

Cheers

Rob

Alfred -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (1/21/2010 3:09:00 AM)

jrcar,

A couple of observations following your recent floating ideas posts.

1.  Subject to weather and final logistic capabilities following end of Adek campaign, I think it would be a mistake for your opponents to simply cloase down operations in NoPac.  They should at least assess the possibilities of moving down the Alaskan  coast until they bring Vancouver into range of night flying Netties.  Bases like Anchorage, which are relatively speaking "inland" and which can have their SLOCs cut off, could be bypassed.

2.  Understand your relative lack of interest in SoPac.  Any value in trying to create a maskirovka in the area at minimal cost.  For example, I assume that at least periodically, Japan sends an AK to pick up resources from Nauru.  You could park a sub there to pick off the AK and to gain intel regarding defences on Nauru.  A successful coup de main on Nauru could be useful (re Ndeni/Tulagi) or to misdirect the enemy.

Alfred

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (1/21/2010 9:03:32 PM)

As requested, although with a recent failed unescorted Nettie raid on PM the stats may have changed :)

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (1/21/2010 9:11:54 PM)

Here is the replacement pools, less soviets.

In my area I need about 100 F4F$ to bring current on map units to strength, I have about 7 in the pool.

Also need about 30 Navy DB, and about 20 Avenger.

Tony is short of Hurricane, and we could do with 20 more P-40e (have some understrength units at Sydney and at Katherine).

Our margins are there, but only because Joe and Nik haven't fought an attrition battle.

Mike Solli -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (1/21/2010 9:13:26 PM)

Shouldn't you guys be the ones pushing for a battle of attrition in the air?

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (1/21/2010 9:20:24 PM)

1. It doesn't help them, it extends their lines, and makes them vulnerable. The Japanese have a lot more ground forces, but still a limit, so I really doubt it.

I think their strategy is to offer a REALLY strong defence (H'm a bit like we have done to them), while maintaining a credible Air and Naval force.

2. We will raid at some point, but not yet, we are happy with the status quo as well. And we will close up, but only when we have the strength to do so.

Cheers

Rob

Where we can I agree, and we are a bit in Burma, and in the SWPAC (Hollianda), but forcing them to fight (such as Burma) is hard. They are fighting for Hollianda, and I'm about to up the ante with 20+ more 4E bombers in the mix (but the Beufighters are exhausted).

We have a requirement for about 30 Maruders (understength units) and 20 B25c as well, so while our fighter pools are low, our 2E bombers are exhausted. We have a reserve of about 20 B-17, but no other 4E.

Basically the Allies don't get the airframes to really contemplete an offinsive attrition strategy until post August, which really means Sept/Oct by the time you fit out and have a small operating reserve. The Allies can jsut hold their own defensively ... unless KB comes a knocking.

24-25 Jun 1942

SIGINT

2/I/19th Naval Guard Unit is loaded on a Japanese TK moving to Adak Island

Looks like they are trying to grab AV together. They are loosing the battle for Adak at the moment.

Subs
All the action around Adak. Over several attacks and hits we get 3 torp hits on one xAK. We also find the replen force again and attack the escorts, getting hit in return for our troubles. We hit but get no bang on a damaged BB Yamashiro also neat the replen TF. Other attacks are unsuccesful.

Burma
No change. 30+ Lysanders join the battle bombing retreating Japanese forces.

Katha makes lvl 1 afld.

DEI
Very quiet.

Kendari expands port to size 4

Confirming its status as the key location in the region. I will start to move more subs here.

SWPAC

Netties come in unescorted against the 32nd div at PM. The results are predicatble, although they know know that the 32nd is there. I suspect losses to the enemy are higher than reported :)

Morning Air attack on 32nd Infantry Division, at 98,130 (Port Moresby)

Weather in hex: Overcast

Raid detected at 40 NM, estimated altitude 13,000 feet.

F4F-3 Wildcat x 18

Japanese aircraft losses
G3M2 Nell: 2 destroyed, 7 damaged
G4M1 Betty: 4 destroyed, 1 damaged

Horn Island finally reaches a lvl 4 afld and has 13 B-17 ready for action against Hollianda, plus 13 LB30 from PM, doubling the 4E strength agsint this base. We hit the base using Merauke based B-17 on one day causing light damage and probably getting 2 Zero.

NORPAC
More forces come into action, including a returning BB Yamato. Lots of small air attacks against light Zero cap sees and equal loss of fighters (3-4 each) but we get a 500lb hit on an xAK. No additional forces appeared to have landed. Maybe they are moving into the hex, will then combine with warships and land on mass.

KB again fails to fly, so another two full days of fort building, must be close to level 4...

Rob: Thanks for the screenies. If you cold post USN air replacements when you get a chance that would be great. In my Scen #8 game against the AI I'm only just starting to get reasonable USN levels in April '43 (although plenty of PBYs).

Your opponents are sure playing a conservative game. It will be interesting to see how this one plays out.

Day 2 is similar. Next turn the LB30 should be ready to join in.

Japanese aircraft have been hitting Wau to moderate effect... need to try and do something about that soon as Wau is an important gateway for us.

We continue to trash Lae, and we now have some recon aircraft that are helping to increase the DL, so the effect has gone up.

Townsville makes a level 5 port.

Luganville level 2 port.

Efate is 1 day from being a level 1 airfield for transiting aircraft.

I have begun moving 13th AF units (P40E and P39) from Australia to Fiji.

SOPAC
No change. Forces are pooring into Fiji at the moment, including HQ SOPAC. I will have to spend some time thinking where these forces need to go.

NORPAC
The landings commence, as I thought they had moved forces into the hex, then reorganised for the actual invasion. This is smart sod it!

They have bought in a LOT of arty, fortunatsly it looks like over the two days, one way or another, 1/3 to 1/2 is rendered ineffective.

KB only launches once to light effect and light- moderate loss.

Suffice to say USN aircraft are in very short supply.

Yes their approach is conservative, I will be interesetd to see how effective it will be, in the end I think it will be quite effective.

Apart for Adak their losses have been low, and if thy keep droping forces at Adak it will eventually fall.

Cheers,
CC

We have found a mass of troops an Toungoo :)

Our screening forces are now picking up the lead enemy units sth of Aryab. Looks like only 1 unit and 2 on Ramree Island.

28-29 Jun 1942

Subs
Off Kwajalein Island we hit and probably sink an xAK
Off Tarawa we trash an xAKL, and lightly damage another.

Burma
Has started to heat up! Tony attacks Toungoo in strength sweeping with Lightnings then attacking with 2 groups of B-17. They have a lot of fighters, including the Tojo's up on CAP and a series of airbattles commence. Day one marginally goes to the Japanese day two to the Allies, losses about equal, and not sustainable by us I don't think. Despite light damage Toungoo makes a level 3 airfield, as does Prome. It looks like the Japanese are now setting up their defensive line.

We recapture Lashio against no opposition.

DEI
ships in Kendari are unsuccesfully attacked by SS Trusty.

SWPAC
The LB30 join in against Hollianda against no opposition. 1 Zero is destroyed on the ground. It looks like they have given up.

They repay the compliment against Wau, my fighters didn't CAP for some reason. They still haven't detected the brigade moving on Buna, only a few days out now I think...

Shortlands expands to lvl 3 afld. Nothing I can do about it at the moment.

Efate makes level 1 airfield. I will build to level 2 then dig some forts.

NORPAC

The invasions continue! Overall it is good for us, look at their bombardments and ours, they are loosing more troops and more importantly more guns than we are. Supply is still over 40k.

LB30 operating from Kodiak make nuisance raids.

KB is out of the area, forts should almost be at 4... maybe 2-4 more days. That will make a BIG difference.

I'm quietly confident now that it will hold until another complete div is unloaded. We have trashed lots of transports and PB's. That will really hurt them later.

We loose an xAKL returning to Dutch Harbour after droping off fuel for PT's to a sub.

At some point we need to look at a relief force

30 Jun - 1 Jul 1942

A big turn in NORPAC

SUBS
We hit an xAP (one of two escorted by an APD) in the hex behind Dili. Ships have been detected here before. Still not sure if they are building a base, or it is just the transit path to Kendari...

No other successes.

BURMA
Tony hits Toungoo against heavy fighter opposition, including NICKs. Lots of damaged B-17. The planse get through but cause littl damage. It is not sustainable for us. I think we are about to head into stalemate in the area.

Tony also bombs Prome against heavy fighter opposition, likewise not sustainable.

Katha makes a level 3 airfield, so at least we can base a decent quantity of fighters forward now.

I'd say the front line will settle in on the Irrawaddy to Lashaio. We have about air and ground parity.

An allied CL Tf bombards Ramree Island. It is occupied by the 143rd Inf Regt.

DEI
No Change

SWPAC
We start to really trash Hollianda, getting 4-5 aircraft on the ground, and around 50 500lb bomb hits. No fighters attempt to escort.

They again hit Wau but this time Kittyhawk from Wau and Wildcat from PM provide cover, shooting down several Zero and a few netties for almost eaual fighter loss to us. WE can afford the Kitthawk losses so will move up another squadron. The F4-F4 Wildcats are in very low numbers.

Luganville makes level 3 port. More force willmove here from Fiji soon to well and truly secure it.

NORPAC

As you can see their deliberate assault failed miserably taking huge losses. They are also lossing lots of ships moving in supply, and KB is being attrited and doing very little. I think they will now give up on Adak, they probably have cadres of troops... if not it will be a bad blow. Their shipping losses to the 57th Cst Art regiment (24 x 155 on panama mounts) has been horrendus.

Planning

Now that NORPAC should wind down I have a small window of opportunity to conduct the Aru operation before KB can intervene.

All the pieces are just about in place, but I'm not sure what to do with the US Cv's which are at LA.

They are due for an AA upgrade, but it doesn't make a huge difference. They have lots of great AA escort ships.

Do I upgrade, or send them ASAP to the SWPAC to support the Aru actions, some fighter cover over Aru for a few days would make a big difference to the likelihood of success...

Prior to Aru I want to move the 7th Bomber command (which has just arrived at Sydney and is rail moving to Townsville) to Merauke to allow more units to operate from there, and the currently operating units of 7th Bomb Command to operate more effectively.

Then I have a raider bn, a USN shore detachment, 2 baseforces, 2-4 engineers and the 8th Marines for the attack on Aru. They will be carried in a TF of AP and AKA supported by CL's, DMS and DD. They should be able to unload quickly with the AP and AKA bonus, and if there is a small detachment there the Marines will make short work of them.

Then the rush will be on to get the airfield on Aru up and working... with only 16 Beufighter for LRCAP...

The more I think about it the more I realise I need CV cover to guarantee the operation.

CV's time to move methinks.

Cheers

Rob

I agree with you on that, I don't feel that many of the minor upgrades are worth taking the time. The way I look at it, the upgrade time schedule that is in the game is based on the real life operations of the carriers. So considering how divergent the real life history and the game timeline can be, sometimes the best course of action is to wait to upgrade. As far as I'm concerned, if I think I have the advantage in any battle theater, I will keep ships on duty so long as I have that advantage.

Besides that, I know that most of the minor AA upgrades are really just for the small stuff, "revenge weapons" that are 20mm caliber, and don't really 'reach out and touch' enemy planes. The key upgrades for me are only the ones fitting radar or drastically increasing AA armament.

Thanks, that is good to know

Here are the airlosses from the turn before the one above.

Note the loss of Lightenings, I think the claims against the Japanese are way too high, but are still significant.

I suspect KB is hurting a bit, but we aren't in much better shape due to a lack of aircraft.
