CrusssDaddy -> Question About Matrix (8/11/2009 10:02:51 PM)

Anybody have any idea how many games/patches/products Matrix has released in the five and a half years since they announced the WiF adaptation? I've been a longtime lurker on these boards and have the original beta computer game, and it's just weird to think of all the things that have changed in my life and in the world since then, and yet still no new WiF game.

This is not a slam on Shannon or the community. The monthly posts show how diligently Shannon has worked, and the level of involvement from the community on this board and in playtesting speak for themselves. But exactly how many other things has Matrix produced in these many years that they obviously thought merited resources that WiF didn't? How is this not a kick right in the asses of loyal WiF fans the world over? Which will last longer, World War II or Matrix's quest to suffocate development of WiF? Will mathmeticians have to find new ways to multiply infinity with itself to discover a number that can describe how many Gary Grigsby games Matrix can release before releasing a single WiF game?

Matrix Games has very few people on staff, and many of them are part time, with the work they do outside of Matrix their 'real' jobs.

Most of the games that Matrix releases are developed by other companies in cooperation with Matrix Games.

The way I think of this is that if a product is created by another company and is 90% ready-for-market, then Matrix enables that last 10% and provides a distribution system for the final game. For example, this is different from most companies that produce movies, where the producers are involved in the movie from the very beginning of the project.
===
The conversion of WIF is different from Matrix's normal business model, since CWIF was not 90% ready-for-market.

CrusssDaddy -> RE: Question About Matrix (8/12/2009 4:42:55 PM)

Then why all the trumpets and fanfare for a game that they knew was quite different from their normal business model, and was far,far away from their 90% ready-for-market arena?  Reading Heath's announcement again, the tenor suggests they are at the helm in a creative and productive capacity, and the product, if not imminent, is at least the focus of considerable company energy.  Clearly, this has not been the case - it has certainly been the focus of considerable Shannon and community energy, but no Matrix energy.  Each year adds another screen or two I must scroll down to find the forums.

Did Harry sell the computer rights completely, or just lease out an option?  After this much time, is there the possibility of reversion so that the rights can be sold (or re-optioned) to an interested, motivated company?

Your questions relate to decisions that I have never participated in.

Of the two Matrix games I follow, MWif is pretty much a model of how things should be done. Steve has had some trouble estimating the completion, but I'm in no position to judge, as my personal life abounds with such miscalculation. When the development team says nothing for practically a year besides to complain how much of their lives are consumed with day job, wife and family, failing to mention any progress whatsoever. This is when I get upset, as is the case with TOAW; an already released game with very little difference since Matrix acquired it 5 years ago. We all bought into the promise that matrix has yet to deliver, and they're not even trying make us feel they didn't take our $50 for a game most of us already had. Yet there are still many pollyanna defenders in the forum. Something the Philadelphia in me has some trouble with.

Hahahaha, okay my bad! I've waited five+ years without a word, I can understand how you must be annoyed at my impertinence. I'll try not to bother you again until 2014.

I would call the sticky thread "When?" a word, wouldnt you ?
If you have failed to read it, it is a fault of your own and not anyone else in the multiverse. Feel free to check the thread and observe planned release just before xmas, hopefully this year [;)]

Re TOAW, the AI is so much better than the Century of Warfare edition and it came with so many scenarios that I thought it was pretty good value for money. Each to their own I guess. I've had thousands of hours worth of fun out of it. I spend more that that in a couple of hours in a pub or nightclub.

Cheers, Neilster

You've mistaken what I said. I'm the one who hasn't said a word in 5+ years, not Shannon. I have read the 'When?' thread, for 5+ years, far longer than you in fact.

Once I have purchased the game, installed it on my computer, familiarized myself with the interface, prepared my gaming area with tasty food and drink, and selected the 'World in Flames 1939-1945' scenario, I'm going to roleplay a strenuous diplomatic initiative by all parties to try to find common cause and prevent an outbreak of hostilities. If nations can just work together to ensure that common goals are met and individual needs worked toward, then the greatest tragedy the world has ever known may be avoided.

War is never the answer.

Hi,

Is it true that you want to do a pacifist wif game? Pretty cool idea. It is one way of showing/understanding how the various tensions of the times were a veritable tinderbox just waiting for a match to produce a "World In Flames".

I have experimented with this type of approach out of curiosity and found that it works best when the game is linked with Days Of Decision and actually played out on the map as such. The newspaper headlines are very interesting to read through as time advances.

My experiments led to a very different kind of arms race between the different powers. The initial hitch to this style of play is what to do with Japan in China and how to handle the civil war in Spain. Maybe a toss of the coin could decide whether Japan stays or retreats back to its island, and which side wins at the peace table in Madrid...

Good luck with your game - it could make for an interesting thread with screenshots to show how the world changes from the 1930's through the second half of the 1940's. [sm=00000924.gif]

I guess I'm not but so much of a fan of playing against a computer, perhaps because I live alone. I'll acknowledge that it has a good AI and pbem experience. Considering it's ability to represent conflicts (albeit lack in the naval and production model) I questioned why MWiF had to do the same at such a cost. I'm going to express how I feel, truthfully, as i believe it better serves us all. I'm happy to take whatever flak for it.
