You saw it in a movie and didn't get it?

It's a letter from a wife or girlfriend to a serviceman announcing the termination of their relationship. I assume the first poor sap to get one was called John...[:D]

My dad used to get them all of the time when he was in ROK and VN. Then again his name is John and the letters were from Mom. [sm=character0272.gif]

Ouch, that hurts... Was it real? I mean, it is SO "cliché" (the whole Ford convertible thing lol) that I can't help wonder if it was a bad joke, or if she was that much of an ass.

I remember reading about China People's Liberation Army dear john letters during the 1979 war against Vietnam... The Chinese girls, they would be more pragmatic, it was reading something like that: "Dear Huang, I know you are at war right now, that's why I am leaving you. My family tells me that you could die anyday, and that soldier isn't a safe job in wartime, and they are right. I don't want to be a widow, I wouldn't be able to marry afterwards. No offense, take good care, I keep the cat"

I did not know it was possible to serve and not get one..I mean....I thought they were government issue, it came with the deal...

I got one from the girl I had been "going" with for maybe 3 years thru most of college, then once that horror story was over, I mistakenly took another girl during leave who I had known for a couple of years, and then SHE sent me one as well!..Sent me this really liberally slanted "peacenik" type Fonda-esque letter telling me I was too violent for her..
Geez....I was a Ranger but that sure as hell never was an issue before I got that latter.
(I later learned she ran off with the stereotypical hippie wannabe in a yellow and purple VW microbus with flowers and chicken tracks painted all over it)..

That "Dear Walter" letter looks like a CapMandrake creation...plus, the oversized exclamation points don't look WWII-ish; I mean, that's like sticking something modern into another time period (like Dances with Wolves, Cold Mountain, Kelly's Heroes, Thin Red Line and other bad Hollywood movies).

Ya haven't lived right 'til you've gotten a "Dear John" letter, but getting one while your overseas in harm's way? Ouch.

The boys used to blot out the names, and post them on a bulletin board when I was in the Army. Surprising how they all seem similar after a while.

I suspect that today, Dear John letters arrive by email. For some reason, that even seems more depressing to me -- getting dumped via digitial transmission.

Anyway, as I recall just about everyone gets them. That is one of the reasons that guys in the service tend to "cut loose" and become wild men with regard to the ladies. After I got dumped via a Dear John, within about six months I was dating three gals at the same time and telling the truth like I was a politician.

I sincerely hope St. Peter wasn't taking careful notes during this timeframe. :-)

I wasnt even at war and I got one.
Was stationed in Korea, a non-accompanied tour (can't take wife with you), she hated it and by the end of the years tour I was single again.

I guess if your going to be made single Korea is a good place to have it happen [8D]

How common were "Dear John" letters in WW II?  Not a common as today, but potentially deadly.  The casualty rates for guys who'd recieved them were significantly higher for a considerable period after they had arrived, according to surveys the Army did during and after the war.

I wish I could find the page I was reading the other day. But I can't right now, anyway it involved a recent story of a Marine (I think) serving in Iraq and he received a "Dear John" letter from home. So, she asked him to return the picture she had given him as well.

So, he talked to his unit buddies, they all gave him a photo or two of various girls each, friend or otherwise, He then replied to her letter by sending her about 50+ photos of women, saying he could not remember which one she was and to take her photo out and return the remainder to him.

She probably took the cat too![8|]
