Mark VII -> BB North Carolina (9/26/2009 2:25:33 PM)

Recently spend a week Vacationing in Myrtle Beach. Wilmington, NC is just 90 minutes to the north. While Wife Unit Mk I spends the day finishing a script, I head off on a field trip.

Near fantail looking forward.

Back of Turret #3. Lots of wires! Don't know the number, but there are miles and miles of wires and cables thoughout the ship.

Yank -> RE: BB North Carolina (9/26/2009 3:19:25 PM)

She looks like she's in much better shape than some of the WWII ships I have toured recently. For example, here in Massachussets we have the USS Massachusetts in Fall River and the USS Salem (CA) on display in Quincy. Both are literally falling apart, especially the USS Salem which is in deplorable condition. It's very sad to see these magnificnet ships decaying - Salem was once the flagship of the Med Fleet (6th?). I believe both are privately run operations and there is obviously not sufficient money to properly preserve them.

I can see the need in the not so distant future to have the Salem sent off to the breakers before she literally rusts to death at her berth.

Mark VII -> RE: BB North Carolina (9/26/2009 3:20:29 PM)

Worth the visit. Think I spent 2 1/2 hours there, could of done another 90 minutes if I had slowed down some and watched the movie.

Great pics, thank you for posting.

Mark VII -> RE: BB North Carolina (9/26/2009 3:27:15 PM)

Yes, NC seems to be in excellent shape. During the day I was there, work was being done on the bow deck and the starboard deckarea midship. The bow was roped off just in front of turret #1 so I couldn't get to the very front for a photo looking aft the length of the ship.[:(]
