It is due the Fog of War I believe.

That just proves that soldiers never exaggerasted their achievements. Really.

Could there have been troops on Reserve orders not being counted?

In this case, no. There was only one unit present (as far as I can tell). The game often reports one figure for the number of opposing troops and the battle report gives a different figure. Supposedly I've completely wiped out a few units only to see them re-attack a few turns later.

Marty A -> RE: Wow - super troops (10/5/2009 5:27:38 PM)

Think disrupt troops not on display but can be killed.

String -> RE: Wow - super troops (10/5/2009 5:54:19 PM)

Disrupted troops are counted as half for combat, but full for losses.

Czert -> RE: Wow - super troops (10/5/2009 8:55:29 PM)

Arent second line trops listed as killed in combat report, but not count in combat because they dont fight due to thier status/use ?

FOW -> RE: Wow - super troops (10/7/2009 10:53:54 PM)

SAIEW

The casualties include the non-combat (support squads) losses which are not factored into the troops/guns/vehicles AV calculation at the beginning.
That and the comment about disabled elements only counting half.
