We're far from giving up! :mad: :mad: :mad:
Still many more turns to go!

The attack on the southern and central sectors is proceeding as planned. The Jaeger squads were riding their bikes around the forests and hills and found two monster tanks - a KV-8 and a KV-2. I probably wouldn't need to say that those tanks are now heaps of wreck metal. :D

A SU-76 gets lucky and dodges two satchel charges.

At the end of the turn my artillery fires some 152mm grenades. One strike hitting the central hill immobilizes an OT-34. :D :cool:
In the south some casualties to Russian infantry.

The 203s didn't do much damage this turn.

Kez -> (7/7/2002 8:37:59 PM)

Finns now fully occupy northernmost victoryhexes. I will recapture them in turn or two, if everything goes as planned. Otherwise pretty quiet, cleaning those sissi squads from my area and keeping my current v-hexes.

DerC -> (7/7/2002 8:55:53 PM)

The central hill is overrun by Finnish infantry and armored vehicles. Some conscripts are spotted behind the hill in the forest. An OT-34 bursts into flames after being shot by a T34 from the rear. All this means that the central VHs are within my grasp now. :p
The Russians are probing our lines in the large forest south of the central hill. They are greeted by some rifle fire from our engineers.
The southern area is still pretty quiet.

Honestly, is that some bad propaganda or do you have some kind of secret force that will attack me in the north? :p ;)

Kez -> (7/9/2002 12:04:14 AM)

SOVIET PROPAGANDA IS NEVER BAD!! :mad: :mad:

Besides.. I still have the troops to take back the northern hexes.
I wouldn't say the same thing about the middle-hexes.

Only couple turns to go.... :rolleyes:

DerC -> (7/13/2002 2:23:13 AM)

Okay, lots of Russian armor and infantry moving around in the north. Smoke from 203 and 120mm tubes is blocking the LOS there.

Other sectors are pretty quiet, we're destroying infantry and making way to the VHs. The center ones will be done in a turn or two, the southern ones may take a bit longer.

Sissis have not been as useful as I thought they'd be. I could've got an infantry company for the credits spent in them. Oh well.. :rolleyes:

Kez -> (7/13/2002 2:45:21 AM)

Operation capture-northen-hexes-and-learn-to-name-your-operations is progressing. Finnish T34's crew was destroyed and a Maxim HMG was forced to pull back. Element of surprice is lost as one of partisan squads runs straight to finnish truck.

Otherwise pretty quiet just spotted angry finns with flamethrowers!
Where did they get those?! :eek:

DerC -> (7/13/2002 7:56:33 PM)

The central and northern VHs are secured. The south will be done in two or three turns. Hopefully before the end of the game anyway.

Indeed, some of my engineer squads are really heavily armed with rifles, flamethrowers, anti-tank mines and hand grenades.

I also see that you came across a minefield with a partisan group. Those engineers can lay them too, you know. ;)

Besides 'removing' Russian infantry there isn't much action. But I'm sure the last few turns will be hot.

I smell victory.. :p

Kez -> (7/15/2002 8:34:44 PM)

Northern hexes are going to fall back to soviet hands in a tun or two as partisans, tanks and infantry have nearly surrounded the hexes.

My southern forces should be capable of holding back the coming attack of finns. Middle hexes have been lost.. I haven't got the troops to take it back.

DerC -> Turn 20/22 (7/16/2002 2:00:53 AM)

Urrah!
A SU-122 and its little brother SU-76 are destroyed in the south. The Russian defense of the sector is crumbling as an arty barrage chews up some infantry in the immediate vicinity of the VHs too.

How nice of the Russians to provide me with smoke cover on the central hill. :rolleyes:

I still haven't seen any trace of the northern attack, but just in case there actually is something I drop some arty there. Looks all empty. :p

The losses on both sides seem horrendous, I remember having three full companies of infantry which are now pretty much shot to pieces. My tanks are also almost done. Thankfully this will be over soon. :rolleyes:

It's down to the two final turns. :D

Kez -> (7/16/2002 6:39:02 PM)

Īn case you still havent seen any trace of my northern attack, I'd say your blind :D because my KV-8 is plowing the way for infantry...and theres this lovely smell of burned finns in the air... :p

In the south my troops morale has collapsed (again) they just sit there holding their vodkabottles... sigh...

VikingNo2 -> (7/16/2002 11:58:03 PM)

Sounds like a good battle I have enjoyed reading it. when yall are done, I like to fight one of you, or both.:D

Oh well.. The turn-based structure of the game may have something to do with this.. :rolleyes:

The norhern sector is still holding pretty well. Reinforcements have arrived and the Russians haven't captured the VHs yet.

Central sector is under bombardment, direct fire from a BM13 Katyusha and some indirect from 120mm mortars. I'm pretty confident I'll hold those hexes.

Southern sector, the VHs are changing colour. One out of four now have the Finnish flag on them. :)

The final turn will be worth seeing. At the end of this turn I fired some countering fire to stop the northern attack, but seems like most of the bombardment missed its target! Oh well..

Viking, I might be able to play you, but since I'm a bit busy at the moment and already playing other games as well (including Kursk) I will at least have to delay our possible game.

Kez -> (7/17/2002 11:36:13 PM)

The recapturing of the northern hexes isn't progressing as smoothly as I thought... Most of the troops are routed because of the finnish arty. :(

Down south my Guard inf uses their last vodkabottle to destroy enemy tank.:D

It looks like I'm going to lost control of the southern hexes, but hey, who cares? We won the war anyway and put up the iron curtain and shouted "Hurrah Communism" for 50 years. :D :D :D

With the assistance of one Katyushka I'm trying to take back the middle hexes also..

Viking. I have currently only 2 games on "active" status and I have slots 6-9 free so... send me a message and let's talk about details. :)

DerC -> Final turn (7/18/2002 12:01:33 AM)

Okay, my final turn is now complete. I got all the northern and central VHs plus three out of four of the southern ones.

In the north I believe the blade of the Russian attack is shattered as a 50mm ATG blows a KV-8 flametank into pieces with a frontal hit at point blank range. You gotta love that APCR ammo! :D

Several squads of infantry are fended off both in the north and in the south. A screen of smoke is now set covering the central VHs from any more direct fire from that Katyusha.

The final OOB, casualties and "Grand battle plan" (;)) coming right after Kez has played his final turn.

Kez -> (7/18/2002 12:25:19 AM)

Final turn over.

I got none of the northern hexes, all but one of the middle hexes and two of the southern hexes.

The final points were 7424 (FI) - 6230 (SO) so it was a mere draw... ;)

My troops were:
4 x SU-122
6 x OT-34
4 x KV-1E
2 x SU-76
3 x Guard inf co.
2 x SMG co.
1 x Conscript co.
1 x Partisan co.
1 btn 203mm
plenty of scouts and snipers
several 120mm mortars
and some Katyushas

I lost 889 men, 20 AFVs, 2 artys and some transports...

...I assume we will meet again at...let's say 1944? :D

DerC -> My OOB and plan (7/18/2002 12:39:15 AM)

First, my OOB for this one.

1x FI HQ
1x AT Co (6x 50mm ATG, 4x Molotov team) If I remember correctly
2x Prime mover platoon (4x A20 Komsomolets each)
1x 152 H 37 Btn (3 Bty each)
1x 152 H 30-10 Btn (3 Bty each)
1x 75 K 17 Bty
2x Forward observer
4x Rifle Co (Rifle sqd 43, plus 4 molotov teams and 4 HMGs per company)
10x Sissi platoon (Total of 30 teams, dumbest thing I bought.. :rolleyes:)
1x Engineer Co
4x Captured T34 section (T34 m.1942, 2 tanks each)
A large quantity of scout teams and some dozen snipers

I called in as reinforcements (mostly to help with the breakthrough in the south)
2x Jaeger platoon (Jaeger sqd 43)
2x 122 H 39 Bty
1x Rifle co (w/o HMGs)
2x Truck platoon (5x Molotoffi each)
1x KV-1E section

Then to my plan.

This was a sort of an experiment to test my strategical skills in SPWaW. It worked to some extent, but I lacked the troops to make it work correctly.

In the very northern and southern ends of the map I tried to make a breakthrough with Rifle companies. These breakthroughs would then allow tanks to move in and devastate the soviet rear area, flank VHs and such. One Rifle company and Engineer company were set to stop any attack attempts through my central sector, and they were to start attacking only after the 'Breakthrough companies' had finished their work. The ATGs were also supporting this defense. The remaining Rifle co was left in reserve.

I ended up committing my tanks to battle too late. The infantry took horrendous casualties trying to break through the enemy lines without the fire support from tanks. After I got the KVs as reinforcements and sent them south along with some Jaegers I instantly started making progress and was at maximum some ten hexes behind the south VHs. A bit off on the north-south axis but I could effectively attack them from the south.

After maybe 12 turns the attack in the north was classified as a bad joke, the remnants of a Rifle company, some reinforcements and maybe a platoon of engineers spent the rest of the battle defending northern VHs. I also had most tank losses in that sector. :(

The central sector was surprisingly easy to capture since I used fresh reserve units with tank support on a suppressed enemy. Artillery surely is the king of warfare.

This strategy of mine still needs some work. Oh well, I seem to have written a long story about it. :D

I'll compare the casualties here, first Finnish then Soviet.

Men 1041 : 889
Arty 3 : 2
Soft veh. 11 : 8
AFVs 7 : 20

A couple of screenshots still coming.
Overall the battle was very satisfying. Rematch in 1944 would suit me perfectly. Maybe later winter war and such. Thanks for a great game! :cool:
