As about defending China in-game, I think that both Southern China and Central Plains are indefensible, if attacked seriously. In both cases a determined Japanese opponent can cut you off, interdicting troop movements with his aviation and cutting off your strongholds. Unfortunately, without industry in Wenchow, Loyang and Chengchow Chinese supply situation seems to deteriorare markedly. At least if their army still is largely intact. On the positive side, troop experience and numbers will steadily increase, as long as there are no huge defeats. And Chinese troops that have at least some supply are quite capable of defending against Japanese in forested terrain. That's where you want to fight (the ideal situation is a base in forested terrain, like Tsiaotso), and that's where you should retreat from regions that you cannot hold. There are enough forests both in the North, on the way to Sian, and in the South. The biggest Chinese problem in the long term seems to be supply. I don't know what to do about that.

You are right, like SPI's War in the Pacific it is very difficult to design a game that is balanced throught out all the Pacific and the little islands and be not unbalanced in a large land massed war conflict. SPI's kink in the game was the Chinese were too strong and could wipe the Japanese off the map inside of a year's time. That unlimited stacking rule was a killer for the Japanese in China. Without China it was a great game!!

Maybe what they need to do is lighten up a little on the potency of artillery attacks.

I would say don't fight the Japanese Army, fight the Japanese quartermasters.

There is not really much of a reason for Chinese troops to engage the Japanese in a stand up fight outside of an interior perimeter along the Changsa - Kwelin railroad. MAYBE go for Wuchow for the light industry there, but be prepared to run for it if he comes after you hard.

If he stacks up, disperse and harass his rear areas. If he disperses, keep large enough stacks in your forward lines to prevent a bum rush, and disperse into his rear areas.

Don't be afraid to keep troops off of roads to maintain a solid line and prevent infiltration....if the Japanese follow suit and match your line, they are being forced to disperse which is good for you. If they don't, you can easily slip units through their line and cause havoc....remember that Chinese troops in supply can in fact beat Japanese troops out of supply and unit stuck deep into the Chinese hinterland relying on a single railway to bring in supply are VERY vulnerable to having that supply disrupted by small bands of guerillas.

Also take QBall's advice and NEVER change the prep targets for your Chinese units until they are trained to 50 or so.
