sandman2575 -> What do you play when not playing WitP:AE? (11/3/2009 9:02:39 PM)

At the risk of being branded a heretic for suggesting that those who love WitP may, very occasionally, play other games… [:)]

I’d be interested to hear what other games the grogs around here fire up when not playing WitP.

Now, as a newb, I have been surprised – and a little alarmed – at how unbelievably engrossing WitP is. “Oh, did 6 hours just go by? I thought my Saturday was just getting started…” And since I bought it back in August, I’ve been surprised at how seldom I play almost anything else now.

I find WitP amazing … but I do not find it especially relaxing. Sometimes I need to play something less intellectually draining.

Do you?

As you can tell from my avatar, I’m a Company of Heroes fan. And may I enthusiastically recommend the “Normandy 44: European Theater” mod to anyone who feels like giving CoH a spin.

Once upon a time, I was a devoted fan of Hearts of Iron… until HoI3 came out. I do not want to start a Paradox flame thread. But, having rushed out to buy Hoi3 when it came out and then being incredibly disappointed with the state it was in (and remains in), my love affair with the HoI franchise is now very much over. I’m very glad I found WitP to take its place.

Other games I enjoy? Sins of a Solar Empire is superb – really well done all around. The Total War series was/is good, but also highly flawed IMHO – the problems surrounding Empire Total War have put me off the series. Galactic Civilizations is excellent, but I haven’t had an urge to play in months. The granddaddy of them all, Sid Meier’s Civilization, also outstanding of course, but I don’t feel the need to play any longer, haven’t in a long time.

I’m curious about many of the Matrix, Battlefront, and AGEOD titles, but haven’t really delved into them yet. Any fans out there of “World War I: La Grande Guerre”? “Time of Wrath?” “Strategic Command 2”? Other Gary Grigsby titles – “War Between the States” – “World at War: A World Divided”?

I guess what I’m after is opinions like, “If you appreciate the quality of WitP, you’ll appreciate X” Doesn’t have to be as complex as WitP – in fact I prefer suggestions of games that *aren’t* as complex! But great gameplay, decent AI, great attention to detail – just quality games that other folks around here enjoy.

(With apologies for the book length post…)

John Lansford -> RE: What do you play when not playing WitP:AE? (11/3/2009 9:07:58 PM)

City of Heroes when I just want to go around beating up things, and Fallout3 when I REALLY want to go around blowing stuff up.

LST Express -> RE: What do you play when not playing WitP:AE? (11/3/2009 9:14:44 PM)

Haven't played anything else in a good while. But I'm looking forward to grigsby's "war in the east".

jmscho -> RE: What do you play when not playing WitP:AE? (11/3/2009 9:16:36 PM)

WitP knocks the spots off anything else - so maybe a little freecell or minesweeper to kill a few minutes, but nothing else.

Q-Ball -> RE: What do you play when not playing WitP:AE? (11/3/2009 9:40:53 PM)

Work, Kids, Sleep, Eat, Family Outings, AE......pretty much that's it. The last other game I played was Battles in Italy, which I played when it was new.....in 2005

besides my day job of building critical public safety systems and living with 5 women I also enjoy Storm Eagle Studios "Jutland". As good as WITP is on a grand strategic level Jutland is at tactical Naval combat. All the details and brutally historically accurate. But most of all fun! Ship to Ship combat with lots of Battleships! doesn't get any better

Nomad -> RE: What do you play when not playing WitP:AE? (11/3/2009 11:13:03 PM)

Morrowind and Wizardry 8 [:D]

Feltan -> RE: What do you play when not playing WitP:AE? (11/3/2009 11:19:05 PM)

Silent Hunter IV with some mods.

Seems I always do better at being a sub skipper in that game than the same subs do in WITPAE. :-)

Plus, it is fun to just cruise around.

Regards,
Feltan

I enjoy many of the HPS games from different eras.

oldman45 -> RE: What do you play when not playing WitP:AE? (11/3/2009 11:28:51 PM)

IL2 holds my interest, along with COD UO.

wpurdom -> RE: What do you play when not playing WitP:AE? (11/3/2009 11:31:39 PM)

I still go back to TOAW (the operation art of war) from time to time.

Grisby's Civil war is OK, but I think I like AGEod's Civil War and Revolutionary War (WIA)games better.

I like the HPS-Talonsoft Civil War battles - COrinth, Gettysburg, Wilson's Creek, etc. Not lately as AE is all consuming of serious gaming time.

When I want something less demanding, the Europa Universalis series will provide amusement. The civilization games used to serve that function, but Civ 4 got too complex to fulfill the "simple" time.

Titanwarrior89 -> RE: What do you play when not playing WitP:AE? (11/3/2009 11:46:05 PM)

War between the States or The Next War. Both are board games. I have a game board set up in my house and leave one or the other set up all the time. No cats or small children. [:)]

Chickenboy -> RE: What do you play when not playing WitP:AE? (11/4/2009 12:43:08 AM)

Rarely venture to anything else. My schedule is akin to Q-ball's. However, on rare occasion, I'll boot up Company of Heroes for some RTS action. There is something uniquely satisfying about machine gunning an enemy squad in a tactical arena...

Leave it to the guy with Company of Heroes Avatar to suggest such a thing! Get the heretic!

City of Heroes was and still is an excellent game. Shame they didn't do a lifetime subscription deal like Lord of the Rings.

Christmas is coming so it is almost snowman time.

Oh, I get it now. No worries. [;)]

1. StrikeFighters2 Series Sims
2. Eagle Day to Bombing The Reich
3. War Plan Pacific - for some light PTO fun.

Regarding the WW1 game you mentioned. I personally think Guns of August is better.
But both games have quirky interface. Maybe that's just how to simulate WW1.

SuluSea -> RE: What do you play when not playing WitP:AE? (11/4/2009 2:16:33 AM)

Eagle Day, HPS Guadalcanal Naval battles at the moment [I would love to see some real time naval action from Matrix] and will be buying GGs War in the East the day it is released.

Canoerebel -> RE: What do you play when not playing WitP:AE? (11/4/2009 2:28:43 AM)

Bought UV in 2002.  Since then I've played UV, WitP, and AE.  Is there anything else?

scott64 -> RE: What do you play when not playing WitP:AE? (11/4/2009 2:57:27 AM)

SC4, Ageod Civil War, WIA2, just bought Supreme Command Pacific. [X(][8|]

Of course, Dan... there's Georgia football! Well... maybe not this year...[:(]

Since UV came out, I also have been unable to seriously get into any wargame other than this series. I've bought a few, but they don't hold my interest.

In the winter when I have extra time, I've been known to kill hours as well as critters in various RPGs from Bethesda and Bioware...

Not this year, my cow-tipping friend; the Yellow Jackets will steamroll them. [:)]

jazman -> RE: What do you play when not playing WitP:AE? (11/4/2009 6:31:49 AM)

I play SH4 with RFB and RSRD mods. Sometimes fire up IL2. Some Ageod ACW (never as Yankees). Some HPS Panzer Campaigns (Eastern Front).

Venividivici10044 -> RE: What do you play when not playing WitP:AE? (11/4/2009 6:45:12 AM)

Great question...If I had FREE time...

Computer games ... HPS Panzer Campaigns... Matrix .... SPWaW - its old but an old favorite
Board Games ... ASL ... Barbarossa ... Star Fleet Battles

Perhaps when I retire someday!  Right now...lucky to play AE on occasion.  Right now Graduate school and 2 full-time jobs get most of my attention!

I fear that you are most likely correct on that one. At least here on the forum Dan and I have you outnumbered, my trade school friend...

LargeSlowTarget -> RE: What do you play when not playing WitP:AE? (11/4/2009 7:52:36 AM)

I am in the lucky position to have free access to many hundred games - have to play (or more correctly test and evaluate) them by profession. Sometimes it's fun, sometimes it's the horror (had to playtest Pacific Storm [X(] - must admit that as an PacWar/UW/WITP/AE veteran I was not entirely unbiased...).  Sometimes I get hooked and continue playing a few selected games in my spare time. Was the case with Sniper Elite and the first S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - I'm not a FPS fanboy but those two got me. Currently playing Risen.

JocMeister -> RE: What do you play when not playing WitP:AE? (11/4/2009 8:20:12 AM)

Mostly CoD4 but latly I started playing Forgotten Hope 2 which is a WWII mod for Battlefield 2. Actually its a very good mod and alot of fun! Playing FPS:s when not playing witp is a good way to let your brain rest for a while :)
