What's the point in building multiple industry structures? As far as I understand it I need such a strcture to build ancillary buildings, such as mines. Well, I'm still playing the tutorial and have built a mine. So far I have not been able to build another one. I thought I would have to build a second colonial workshop first, but after doing so I still am not able to construct another mine. So what are multiple industry structures good for, simply speeding up development? And what do I have to do to being able to build multiple mines, are they limited to one per planet? Unfortunately, the manual does not help much in that part of the game. Thanks!

You can only ever build 1 mine/asteroid mine/ etc on a single planet..you can however upgrade them, depending on your construction facility level.
As you said, you can prolly build more than 1 item at a time, altough I never would see that as useful, however what IS useful, is that you can have more than 1 ship factory at a planet...so you can really use those 'rich' planets to their limit..

ok, thanks, so building multiple industry structures on a planet does not make sense though building multiple dockyards does

They're used for building defenses and ground units too, so having two is useful if you want to harden up a planet in a hurry, or turn out a lot of ground units. Mostly one is enough though.

Yep. You can then scrap one of them when defenses are sufficient. IIRC industry structures are capped at 2 per system, shipyards at 7.
Having 2 industry may also help you keep one in case of riots, if the other is destroyed  [;)]
