Wasp -> How are pilots killed, then captured? (6/28/2002 11:08:34 AM)

Ok, I think I have found a minor bug. After seeing both of my carriers being blown out of the water (I think it's campaign 17)
I found something interesting. Take a look at the file attatchment. It says the pilot has been killed, then the pilot has been captured. What's up with that? Any idea on what's going on?

Dunno but I think capturing dead guys has got to be against the Geneva convention. This looks like the work of the infamous Dr. Frankensteinsan.

This is just additional proof of the historical accuracy of the game model...getting captured by the Japs WAS a fate worse than death.

mogami -> Pilot POW's (6/28/2002 5:41:15 PM)

Hi, Sadly USN Pilots recovered by the Japanese were questioned and then tossed over the side. (weighted down)

Kingfish -> (6/28/2002 6:51:44 PM)

On a similar note, how can a pilot be captured if his airplane isn't shot down? I had 9 B-17Es bombing Rabaul, and one was damaged by Flak (but none shot down). The combat report then listed the CO of the group as captured. Did the flak punch a hole underneath his seat?

mogami -> all made it home (6/28/2002 7:04:00 PM)

Hi, dispite the combat report of none shot down, are all 9 planes actually now safe at home? (check operational loss for turn)

The flak damage probably caused him to panic and bail out. The rest of the crew brought the bird home safely.:D

That I didn't check, and the turn is long gone. Still, why wouldn't the combat report include the loss of the plane?

mogami -> How and when AC are lost (6/29/2002 12:09:02 AM)

Greetings. During the combat phase any ac shot down occur at that moment. However AC are not finished being lost during the mission. Damage, weather and other things (airfield condition and size) can cost you AC. That AC might have been damaged but still flying then on return trip it finally went down with the pilot staying at the controls while his crew bailed out. The report for a pilot can come any time during the turn the group is still in the air, (sometimes on landing you get a "pilot killed" message)
The groups are in the air for longer then the time you view them. Often a pilot killed meaasge can be part of another combat event not related to flying. (A sub attacks and at top of report a pilot is listed, this means during the same time as the sub attack he crashed his damaged AC it might be on other side of map)

Non Air to Air, flak bombed on ground air loss are listed as operational they can be a result of enemy action pilot skill weather.....

thantis -> (6/29/2002 12:09:10 AM)

I've noticed incidents where my pilots get killed, or get a kill without there being any combat (usually showing a line from one of my bases to an occupied Japanese base).

I figure operational losses are calculated until the end of the turn, but these random kill notifications are a little mysterious.

pad152 -> (6/29/2002 1:38:50 AM)

Top pilot list should include POW when a pilot is captured. The games tells you pilot XX has be captured but, the pilot list only shows KIA, MIA.

Paulchen -> (6/29/2002 1:50:58 AM)

MIA stands for capture, because the enemy isnīt sending a postcard:"Hello dear enemy, we have captured your pilot John Doe, and he feels very well. We hope you will not angry with us, sorry."

entemedor -> Pilot casualties (6/29/2002 3:11:47 AM)

Talking about pilot casualties...

1. The chance of being captured when shot-down shouldn't be the same for IJN and Allied pilots. In my game as IJN, about 50% of the squadron leaders shot-down are reported captured. That's totally unrealistic; the chance should be less than 10%. Until 1943, very few Japanese pilots carried parachutes, as they would rather face impossible odds returning with a crippled plane than risk dishonourable capture by bailing out. Leaders in particular, then their planes were seriously hit, mostly opted for deliberately crashing against any available target. From 1943 on, with the Japanese training system unable to cope with catastrophic pilot losses, most leaders ordered their pilots to carry parachutes, but the leaders themselves mostly kept flying without them.

2. In general, both for IJN and Allied, survival chances for pilots shot-down over water (i.e. on strikes against carriers) should be substantially reduced. Just look at how few men survived from the airmen shot-down at Coral Sea. Midway, Santa Cruz...

Of course that's a point completely irrelevant to game outcome. But it would help to the (already enormous) feeling of reality.

Toro -> (6/29/2002 4:08:02 AM)

He obviously was only MOSTLY dead.

dgaad -> (6/30/2002 5:52:51 AM)

He distinctly said "to blaive", which as we all know, means "to play".
