Amercal should take Buna tomorrow this is goin g to be a long war but at least I am regaining some forward momentum again

Andy Mac -> RE: Rangoon Liberated (10/17/2011 9:36:04 PM)

Yesterday's CAS missions on the Moulmien front.

Looks like a combination of the Japanese 21st and 28th Armies

My bombers will hit home of the next few days trying to keep the pressure up

Andy Mac -> RE: Rangoon Liberated (10/17/2011 10:16:07 PM)

Hmmmm I only count 4 or 5 Divs there......

If thats all he got IV Corps can probably take em alone IV Corps has about 2,500 AV on the flank 14th Army has about 5,000 across the river at least until the monsoon hits when I will be withdrawing XXXIII and XV corps into Army Group Reserve

14th Army has a few weeks to drive as far south as possible

Andy Mac -> RE: Rangoon Liberated (10/17/2011 10:17:39 PM)

GHQ has decreed that come 15th May only IV Corps will be left to continue the pursuit all other forces will withdraw to refit for future operations

6 weeks to force the Moulmien position and convince GHQ that an overland attack into SEA can succeed

JeffroK -> RE: Rangoon Liberated (10/18/2011 1:56:48 AM)

"Bum on to Moulmein"

Andy Mac -> RE: Rangoon Liberated (10/21/2011 1:00:44 PM)

PZB abandoned the Sittang Line and pulled back to Moulmien....

My army is now thinking about wherther I should cross

I have about 8,000 AV facing off against 100,000 Japanese LCU's

So that probably means 7 or 8 Divs or 3,000 - 3,500 AV

For the first time PZB is facing with concentrated forces dug in begind prepared defences with decent supply

I simply do not know....

I am sure I have the firepower and air power endge but that 1st shock attack would be painfull.....

Hmmmmm decisions decisions.....

Andy Mac -> RE: Rangoon Liberated (10/21/2011 1:02:19 PM)

Its hard to flank because the terrain on the flank is difficult - yes I will do so but not with a full Corps.

It will take 10 days for a Corps to cover a single hex so at best I can have a Corps in his rear inside 20 days and thats cutting it fine for the monsoon.....

I would advise to flank and bring a sufficient number of AVs into Moulmien prior to crossing over the river. 2,5k - 3k AV behind even some forts in a light forrest base (or is it even rough) can be pure suicide. You can easily lose 1500+ squads either disabled or destroyed.

I made bad experience with large stacks of units fighting against other large stacks, especially in forced shock crossing. So bring in 2k or so by bypassing, then cross with a weak unit first and then your main army can safe cross.

Be advised, if the hexside over the river is Japanese controlled (and i assume it is) and you have more than 1/3rd of the enemy AV in the hex (with bypassing) and you move your entire army at the same turn the first unit will still do a lone shock attack and might be completely crushed. So the best is to first cross with a base force, or an other very small unit (which will be destroyed or heavily damaged, and as base forces cannot shock or attack they are the best to cross rivers in such situations.) and bring in the main army a turn later.

In general your will face a quite nice decision for the allies. Soon the Japanese have to split their forces to defend to the right to protect laos/vietnam area and to the left in direction to Singapore. You then can decide how many units you will send to each direction and you can gain quite easily a quite superior force in one of the directions.

I have tried flanking Moulmein with a 10,000 AV army... my opponent had about 2000 in the hex to the right of Moumein - it did not go out well... I am stuck there with insufficient supply for even 1 full attack - however this is still with the last official patch...

problem with flanking Moumein is that you won't be able to move your troops from that hex to Moulmein if he has troops there, unless you first route those troops.... - as well all know....

so I doubt that flanking would make much of a difference - however in the hex next to Moulmein he'll never have such high forts nor will he have high supplies.... - so if YOU can fix YOUR supply problem in this hex - you will succeed!

Yea i thought that too that i understood it [:)]. Had it a few weeks ago with a quite recent beta patch. The situation was the following. I had around 5k AV friend troops in a hex with around 5-6k AV enemy troops. I sent in 3k AV addition troops using a hexside which was enemy controlled and a river crossing. The moving troops where some armored bdes and some divisions. The first unit which crossed the enemy controlled hexside over the river even when i had 1:1 av in the hex did and automatic shock attack (was a armored bde which got mauled). There was a thread in the tech forum about it and michaelm did a check on it. He said everything as planned, the first unit crossing into an hex via and enemy controlled hexside over a river does an automatic shock attack even if you have more than the requested (1/3 i think ) AV in the hex. But it is just the first unit and not all units as it would be if you do not have the (1/3 i think).

Andy Mac -> RE: Rangoon Liberated (10/22/2011 2:54:54 PM)

I was going to cross the river direct but thought better of it.

Repeating previous tactics 2 Corps are flanking with one holding across the river

Supply situation is pretty good now - I am getting 10,000 supply per day across the docks at Rangoon now with small convoys en route at all times.

In CENTPAC the fleet is on the move we will see what happens target the line islands - I will list attack force soon !!!

Andy Mac -> RE: Rangoon Liberated (10/22/2011 5:08:01 PM)

Major air fights in Burma I lose 80 odd he loses 100+ large numbers of mine obsolete Hirricanes large numbers of his obslete Oscars

Andy Mac -> RE: Rangoon Liberated (10/22/2011 7:55:53 PM)

In a few weeks the RAF can get back into the fight

At present only the 32 Spit VIII's I get a month can be considered front line

That doubles with the aerrival of Jugs at the end of the month at the rate of 40 per month :):)

With Rangoon mine and its good roads I dont need to stop for supply anymore (albeit I have a self imposed deadline as I want to rest 2 Corps for future offiesive action)

Andy Mac -> RE: Rangoon Liberated (10/23/2011 2:08:50 AM)

My lack of replacementes is killing me

Today was a weird one apparently not seent eh replay.

I tried to hit one of PZB's AF's all my AF's were socked in and a strike went in with 30 fighters escorting 180 mixed bombers.

I lost about 40 of the total so about 20% loss rate - PZB is unhappy because they blew past his CAP and trashed the AF anyway but I have my own concerns

I really really hate the fact that I can no longer put together Groups of fighters and that I dont have the option to late war amalgamate RAF Sqns into wings wish we had managed to do something in that space.

Overall I got lucky 180 losees would have crippled me.

What I really is pool density the air model is still so bloody (far better than stock but still bloody) and I never have pool density to be able to take losses and keep going.

I hate not having reserves it really bugs me that one bad day can put an entire airforce out of action

JeffroK -> RE: Rangoon Liberated (10/23/2011 2:10:49 AM)

Blame the devs[:'(]

Andy Mac -> RE: Rangoon Liberated (10/23/2011 2:12:58 AM)

So I now have operations going in thre theatres

1. Land/Air in Burma to secure Moulmien
2. Expanding my toehold in New Guinea
3. CENTPAC operation to hit Line Islands

Andy Mac -> RE: Rangoon Liberated (10/23/2011 2:26:46 AM)

[:D][:D]

I know I guess things like hyper accuracy sometimers bug me v playability

e.g. seperate pools of some common types of CW aircraft e.g. Beaufort, Beafighter, Kittyhawk, Spitfire, Ventura they are all split into penny packets across all CW nations to represent different national pools but individually each pool is to small to be effective with the air model.

e.g. I get an RAAF Spit VIII and an RAF Spit VIII pool one gets 20 per month and the other 32 - would far rather have one aircraft available to both gettign 50 per month penny packets = PITA

Beaufighters - 12 RAF per month, 6 RAAF - neither AF has enough to fight thats basically enough to keep 1 Sqn in the air for each nation and then barely - a single pool of 18 far better, Beau X

Mosquito VI - basically 12 RAF, 12 RAAF and then later 24 Canadian simply not enough need more concentrated pools and replacement rates not enough pool density for the air model

Historically accurate - hell yeah - playable yes but able to compete no

Andy Mac -> RE: Rangoon Liberated (10/23/2011 2:31:39 AM)

ps whinge over ;)

The problem, and the accuracy within the game, is that these pools where not geographically capable of supporting/swapping airframes. I've seen a lot of games where RCAF & RAAF units are sent to India to provide a concentration of units.

Add to this that some of the Beauforts, Beaufighters & Mosquitos where made in Australia.

I dont know how the emergency reos get activated, but a series of lines closer to Calcutta / NW Australia to activate extra squadrons or convoys carrying extra aircraft would be nice, or a plump convoy sitting at Rosyth which needs hundreds of PP to release.

In one of my games, in 1943-44 I had a number of RAF squadrons still usinh Buffalo & Mohawks as rear area defence and training. I also use many SBC Helldivers and SBU Vindicators in the rear to cover convoys.

Andy Mac -> RE: Rangoon Liberated (10/23/2011 12:32:16 PM)

Aye I guess so anyway the fleet is on the move covering over 200 transports with lots of US troops to attack the Line Islands

Andy Mac -> RE: Rangoon Liberated (10/23/2011 12:51:11 PM)

I have 3 RAF Sqns in Bufffalos, 2 in Mohawks and 1 in Hurricane Mk 1's

4 RAF and IAF Fighter Bomber Sqns are in Fulmers for lack of anythign better

1 Bomber Sqn in Audaxes another in Waipitis, 1 in Blenheim 1's and 3 in Lysanders....

So thats 16 Sqns in obsolete aircraft because I have nothing better to put them in.......

7 other Sqns are in the naval search versions of Wellingtons or Liberators because I have nothing better to put them in

So thats 23 Sqns basically out of my offensive OOB because of lack of aircraft

Andy Mac -> RE: Rangoon Liberated (10/23/2011 1:02:45 PM)

1 sqn in Blenheim IV, 1 in VD, 2 in Hudson III's, 3 in Vengeance DB's, 3 in Beaus or Hurrican IV's and 4 Sqns in Bomber Variants of Lib or Wellington, 7 in Various Marks of Spit and 10 in Hurricane IIc are the best in my armoury

So about 31 Sqns of front line (arguably) aircraft......

So 40% of the RAF and IAF are basically useless through lack of aircraft.

The next patch will help a little

But basically at present I get

FB - 16 Beaufighters, 12 Mosquitos and 6 Hurricane FB replacements a month
Bombers - 15 Lib IV's per month and 6 WellingtonsBX's for a few more months
Fighters - 12 Vc's and 32 VIII's but with 40 Thud I's arriving at end of month
DB's - 25 Vengeance I's with over 150 in pool

So Fighters will slowly recover and I can probably convert a few Bomber Sqns to DB's to increase available Sqns

Andy

traskott -> RE: Rangoon Liberated (10/23/2011 1:55:43 PM)

Perhaps u should change the scheme of their missions ? I mean: Use the LB just for night missions, fighters just in defensive missions, Mosquitos at night intruder's missions... in order to get the pool up.

RAF and IAF at WitpAE are always one of the more weak air asset of the allieds. Mainly defensive jobs. Historically they didn't do as much strategic warfare as u are doing, not so much extensive, so all those losses are, at the long run, unaffordables.

Andy Mac -> RE: Rangoon Liberated (10/23/2011 2:45:40 PM)

No night bombing its a HR we have other than Strat bombing

Tried using Hurricane 2c's for CAS a few days ago lost a lot of them

Andy Mac -> RE: Rangoon Liberated (10/23/2011 2:49:10 PM)

I am mixing it up a little A20's are my main bomber in Burma now

B25's mostly in Australia

I can only dream of having a CAP or sweep of 160+ modern same type fighters
