Group patrol altitude is 42000 , scrambling fighters to 42000. Time for all group planes to reach interception is 1 minutes and hereīs this turnīs surprise... I had to look twice at the replay until I really realized that the fighter I havenīt seen before in the replay was a Frank! [X(] Itīs Dec 43 and the enemy sends in his first Frank unit... Not that surprising when you get to hear that 2 or 3/44 is the normal date for Franks to appear but until today I wasnīt aware of the Japanese producing this fighter already, let alone having a unit(s) equipped with it... when the first shock was over I happily realized that the Franks were coming in at 6000ft and lost their dive within a couple of passes with the dive changing side for the rest of the engagement... the 26 Franks were falling everywhere while being dived by Thunderbolts, they had not even a slight chance... now this is the best Japanese fighter and when looking at the stats, itīs definetely a great aircraft (superior to lots of my fighters, except the really best ones) and Iīm sure that Rainer hasnīt equipped a poor unit with it (he surely has equipped one of his best units with this new fighter) but due to ending up against the never ending dive, even Warhawks would have shot down the Franks at will... in the end it was a massacre with kill rates comparable to Oscar vs P-47 encounters... the result was as surprising as the appearance of this fighter, the reason for the result is clear as always: the never ending dive... to me, it then just always ends in loops that are off, no doubt that the Franks were hopelessly outnumbered (thanks to the non working coordination routine that isnīt working at all during sweeps) but if you then end up taking down more than two dozen Franks for 3 Allied fighters lost seems a bit too much to me... as soon as the replay was over I checked Japan for Frank factories and counted them up, current production capacity is around a hundred Franks per month, which again is very conservative for a Japanese player. There are some 130 Tojo, a couple of dozen Tony, 150 Zeke, and dozens of George, Nick and Jack factories. In total, the enemy probably got a fighter production capacity of something like 400-450 fighters per month. Rather conservative for a Japanese player but probably roughly as many fighters we get per month. Iīm sure Rainer wasnīt pleased with the first Frank mission... in this case, the 6000ft attack didnīt work at all... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morning Air attack on Hanoi , at 68,56 Weather in hex: Overcast Raid spotted at 21 NM, estimated altitude 11,000 feet. The Tojos lost but only at a 2-3:1 rate which probably is more reasonable than the dive loops that end up somewhere between 8-10:1... and while 10:1 rates might still have happened in real life, you should not take real life Oscars with green pilots in 44 and compare this with elite pilots flying Franks in late 43 in this PBEM as this is more than just a huge difference IMO... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morning Air attack on Hanoi , at 68,56 Weather in hex: Overcast Raid spotted at 35 NM, estimated altitude 7,000 feet. Time for all group planes to reach interception is 78 minutes 4 planes vectored on to bombers then the inevitable happens... while so far we didnīt face enemy bombers over Hanoi, this time also bombers showed up after the two sweeps coming in first.. with still 70 fighters in the air our boys didnīt do bad and also mauled some of the escorting units, the bombers made it through more or less unharmed and then dropped their laser guided bombs as usual, achieving something like a 60% hit rate with their crappy bombers... if we could achieve something like this with our 4Es then I would only need 1/3 of them at best and could forget about all the missing USAAF medium bombers... with the not working radar, this meant bad news of course, we did great in the air, but even with 80% Cap 20% rest, we end up with dozens of fighters on the ground waiting to get bombed because even if you first have wave after wave coming in, each time it seems to "surprise" the Cap again with the fighters just trying to scramble (which fails of course)... over a dozen of my really precious fighters are lost on the ground with more of them being written off... you can only be happy the enemy using only a handful of bombers and not using 150... why he doesnīt is beyond me... even if the average 1:3 performance of his first line fighters against the P-47 and Spit VIII is ok for Rainer, he wonīt really get anyway as I can sustain these losses, but if he would send 150 bombers together with the same number of fighters just once, he would whipe out the resistance at Hanoi in one day, robbing us of a 2.5 months P-47 replacement for the loss of probably some 70-90 aircraft... he can afford to lose 100 aircraft, I canīt afford to lose more than 100 P-47 and dozens of Spitfire VIII in one day... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morning Air attack on Hanoi , at 68,56 Weather in hex: Overcast Raid spotted at 49 NM, estimated altitude 9,000 feet. Group patrol altitude is 42000 , scrambling fighters to 42000. Time for all group planes to reach interception is 34 minutes Rainer really sent in most of his available fighters today it seems, this one shows up in the afternoon... while I usually am happy about Oscars meeting our armored fighters bristling with cal.50 in this case it was by far not as one sided as usual which can be easily seen by the Allied fighters shot down... usually you see downed Oscars in the replay with no or very few P-47 downed (many damaged though and also lots getting written off) but in this case even the (wrong) combat report shows a 2.5:1 kill rate... the Oscar unit was shred in the end but while having the dive (at 6000ft [8|]) for probably 80%+ of the engagement they really shot up our fighters and there was nearly nothing left after this fight... would these Oscars have come in with all the other fighters before the bomber strike it could have been very bloody, even though only some 50-60 bombers were tasked to attack... the total tally today was two dozen P-47 lost and halve a dozen Spits (donīt care about the Hurricanes, these are like Throwaways and total useless for me)... with the exegaration in the loss list for enemy ac lost I expect to have achieved a 2:1 in the end, which is by FAR not good enough to sustain it over a longer period... the P-47, the Spit VII and the Corsair are the only competitive fighters for Cap at the moment. I get 57 P-47 per month, only a handful of Brit Spit VIII and have got no USMC squadrons in this area of course... so if talking about P-47 only, we have to achieve a 4:1 to be satisfied... 4:1 in total (including bombers shot down), so a 3:1 against fighters only still is somewhat "ok"... if the enemy would try to bleed the P-47 with sweeps only and we achieve a 3:1 using them, then a monthly replacement of P-47 would take down something like 175 enemy fighters and this probably will bring the enemy sweeps to a halt soon, especially if you think about the enemy pilots being lost if they are shot down over Hanoi... the enemy surely hasnīt got a pilot shortage, but losing more than 200 (if you also count the fighters shot down by Spits and Hurricanes) then even the reserve pilot pool will start feeling this at some point... Iīve always thought I would never run out of 70 skilled USN pilots in my reserve pool but there were so many new carriers showing up in the last months that the pool is down to just a couple of 70 air skilled pilots with not even all pilots in the squadrons replaced with 70 standard pilots, same is true for navbmb (Dauntless and Helldivers) and navtrp (Avenger) pilots... and itīs not like I would have lost many of these pilots, not at all were our losses severe, but we are fielding some 1250 carrier based ac at the moment which means with the losses and the pilots to be replaced when the carriers arrived we had to put some 1400 pilots into these units! [X(] You donīt have to wonder that the reserve pool starts lacking 70 skill pilots at some point and we have been doing training from day one of the campaign...
