Here are the minimum system requirements for RoF:

Operating System Windows® XP / Vista
CPU Intel® Core™2 Duo 2.4 GHz
RAM 2 Gb
Free Hard Drive space 6 Gb
Joystick Direct X 9.0 compatible joystick
Internet Connection 256 Kb/s (required)
Graphics Card 512 Mb, GeForce 8800GT/Radeon HD3500
Sound Card DirectX 9.0c compatible

Supported Operating Systems
Windows XP / XP 64 Service Pack 2 or higher
Windows Vista / Vista 64 Service Pack 1

There is currently not a dynamic, full-blown campaign like you would find in earlier games like Red Baron 3D. However, the devs have indicated that that is coming shortly. The current implementation of the campaign is a series of random single missions.

The is also multiplayer capability, with many servers available. The flight models, physics and damage models are first rate, with some options to help less experienced pilots.

This sim is very fun, although last night when the fuel tank on my DRI got punctured and I ran out of fuel at 2,000 meters, it became even more fun as I had to work my way down to a dead-stick landing in a French pasture.

For beginners, I highly recommend enabling Automatic fuel mixture, Auto-radiators, and Warmed-up engine. That way you can focus on flying, and once you get your air legs you can always turn those on.

BTW, gents, I notice that Rise of Flight is Direct2Drive's Deal of the Week at 50% off.

JudgeDredd -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/1/2010 11:10:55 PM)

That is simply just the best thing that's happened to me this year! I was about to press the buy button and the only thing that stopped me was I've been at a friends over the holidays! Now it's half price! A definite purchase now!

htuna -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/2/2010 12:53:17 AM)

I'm gonna try the demo in a few minutes.. could be following you down this purchase path!

Grim.Reaper -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/2/2010 1:26:42 AM)

Just purchased this myself.  Defintely worth the sale price.  I'm still learning how to fly the planes but so far having fun with it.

JudgeDredd -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/2/2010 12:07:43 PM)

Ok - 13 planes, 1 Great War sim and £59 lighter...will get back to you

Grim.Reaper -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/2/2010 1:35:26 PM)

I played ROF most of last night and so far so good.  I'm not a great pilot in flight simulators so it takes me a while to get used to everything but my first impressions are very positive.  Can't for the life of me shoot anything down yet (except a balloon), but still fun trying.  Also after browsing the forums at the official site, seems like this game is going to be supported for a very long time with new content.

JudgeDredd -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/2/2010 3:35:58 PM)

Ok...Training Missions 1 to 4 done and so far so good. The 5th training mission seems impossible (for a crappy pilot of my standard!). You have to destroy two vehicles with guns (they're moving) and 1 tank with bombs.

With using the slow down feature to 1/2 speed I managed to destroy the vehicles...but it was way too difficult. I think I'll have to adjust the sim settings so the wind is blowing me around...I simply cannot shoot straight at the moment.

The tank was very difficult. I do have unlimited weapons...I don't normally have this cheat on in campaigns and missions, but always do for training as the important part is trying the methods - not conserving ammo. I did eventually get a tank - but did not use the described method and used about 50 bombs! I then proceeded to crash into some trees I was flying so low (the only way I could hit the damn thing!)

The flight model is ace. The graphics are fantastic. the scenery is great (it's very atmospheric flying over no mans land and seeing artillery shells exploding on the ground) and the aircraft are beautiful and all seem to have unique flying characteristics.

It's very difficult though. I may have to switch some cheats on for this one...at least initially.

bah! demo doesnt work..oh well..back to other games

htuna -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/3/2010 12:28:23 AM)

I took the plunge too... had a 5 dollar gift credit from Direct 2 Drive cause of buying something else during their Xmas sale!!.. so only 15 bucks!!!... bought the bundle pack that had the Dr1... was gonna buy the first one.. but saw that you already get the Albatross DV and Nieuport 28 with the game itself.. so that bundle is kind of a rip off....

Thinking of getting the one with the Nieuport 17 and Albatross Dii...

Played a lil bit.. and like others said, it's not easy.. but it sure is fun!!! Tutorials seem pretty good also...

cmurphy, I'm thinking about buying the bundle you did, would appreciate your comments on those planes. Are they fun? Are the easy to control? I might end up buying them all at some point, but this would be my first bundle.

htuna -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/3/2010 2:02:22 AM)

DrI is definately fun!... turns on a dime.. I'm not an expert pilot. so don't know how good my opinions would be... like I said the first one definately don't buy. you get the planes with that game.. so would be a waste of money

you can check the single planes one at a time when you get the game.. then you'll see which ones you alread have... it says Plane is avail.. I think.. the Fkkr DVII, Albatross DV.. Nieuport 28 and Spad are the ones that already come with the game...

Grim.Reaper -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/3/2010 2:11:33 AM)

Thanks for the feedback.  I also noticed that about the ones that came with the game.  Can't think of a reason they would be selling those online since everybody gets them for free.  I wonder how many people have made that mistake:)

htuna -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/3/2010 3:33:16 AM)

Hopefully Judge didn't!!!... But I give this game a big thumbs up so far!!!!... lol tried a career and died in the first mission.. would assume one would have to get a lot better before attempting Multi Player

Agreed...really enjoying this, even though I stink at it. I can have an enemy fighter lined up right in front of me and I still can't hit the darn thing....gonna take much practice:)

htuna -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/3/2010 4:27:26 AM)

Woo Whoo.. got my first kill.. although didn't make it all the way home.. but crashed in friendly territory... Is there a way to save/backup your careers?

Not 100% sure, but I think the career information is actually stored online with the developer web site. I could not find any local files in the "data" directory that could be backed up for a career like you could do for an input map. Again, not an expert but just my thoughts.

Roger.. I guess if you in a pickle.. don't have enough time to restart and play the mission through, you could always start again then end on the airfield alive..

Hard Sarge -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/3/2010 5:21:15 AM)

for what it is worth, the early, Russian verison of the game, only came with 2 planes, which is why some of the planes listed for sale, are now in the game (western release had 4)

JudgeDredd -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/3/2010 8:07:30 AM)

That's correct Hard Sarge...those planes are bundled for people who bought the game when it came with 2 aircraft!

cmurphy...I didn't buy those. I wrote down on a piece of paper the aircraft available in the bundles, crossed off the bundle with the two already in the game then added the other 3 which are not bundled.

Hard Sarge -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/3/2010 10:19:27 AM)

so, how do you like it Judge ?

so far, I am enjoying it (want to shoot down my wingmen though !)

(then again, it may just be how the game see's things)

was ready to enjoy the rewards for my 5 kill mission, when I landed and only was awarded one !

my last mission, got a Balloon, knocked down two N.17's (one was iffy, but I put a long burst into it, and then as I turned to get the other off my tail, could see it dive and lose it wings) broke off, headed towards a 2ndary target, got into a ruckess with some S.E.5a's got one, and got some bursts into the others, shot up 8 trucks, returned home, and started to climb, as I wanted a recon bird, seen two of them nasty buggers, dove on one, then came around, and got the engine to begin to flame, and broke off as my engine was hit and I was out of ammo, landed short of the airfield (I did cut both sets of struts on the one wing, on the 2nd, but it flew away)

get out and check with HQ, and I got 1 kill, and 1 Balloon, with 8 trucks (to be honest, if I would of been making a report, I would of claimed 1 17, 1 S.E.5a, 1 Balloon, 1 B.14 and 8 trucks, with 2 possible, and 2 damaged)

(I watched that 14 burn all the way to the ground, but never got the kill)

ahhhhh, gave up for the day after that mission

19 kills, 15 trucks and 1 balloon so far, for Lt. HARD Sarge

(be happy when they make some new skins for the DIII)

Hard Sarge -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/3/2010 11:32:09 AM)

oh well, bite me

my career ended with nothing telling me it did or why

I had to dead stick my last landing, the game gave me a plane destroyed message when the engine froze ?

(hmmm, it is not destroyed until I wreck it, if I get it down, it is only damaged ?)

hmmm seems to be a pattern here

:(

JudgeDredd -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/3/2010 11:45:39 AM)

I like it. Quite atmospheric, but it's bloody difficult!

I am trying to do all the training missions, though may give up now. The 5th and 6th missions (in my opinion) are just not do-able unless you have unlimited ammo for the 5th and the 6th just seems impossible.

The 5th you get two bombs to blow up one tank...I used about 40 or 50 before I actually blew one of them up.

The 6th mission has you against an Albatross and then against two Fokkers. After trying for the 5th time I eventually get the Albatross...just seemed like we were flying in circles until eventually I made it onto his six...but he was no easy take down even when I got there! The second part of the mission you have to fly to where two Fokkers are waiting for you. It took them seconds to tear me a new one.

So yeah...enjoying it but finding it rather frustrating as well. I might give up on trying to complete the final mission and just create a new career now...maybe I'm just getting bored of playing the same mission over and over.

I don't have TrackIR and that makes it pretty difficult to keep track of the enemy.

Pity about your careers! Doesn't bode well.

Grim.Reaper -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/3/2010 1:52:24 PM)

Judge,

I'm on the verge of paying for all the additional planes, but before I do, just curious based on what you see so far if the game has longevity to warrant a lot of extra cash for these planes. I have the game as well and so far really enjoying flying the plane and graphics. But like you said, this thing is hard! I haven't gotten a single airplane kill yet:( I've only hit one lonely truck:( Plus, what HardSarge has reported about the career stats makes me hesitant to put a lot of effort into a career (and not to mention cash but with those bundle sales ending next week, I don't want to miss them if I'm gonna get them eventually). Although, seems like the developers do release a patch every month so maybe all this gets ironed out at some point.

I really want a good WW1 flying simulator and just not really interested in OFF because it is more Mod based then a new game from the ground up. I certainly could be wrong, but just my feelings.

Your thoughts? Other people's thoughts?

Hard Sarge -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/3/2010 1:54:27 PM)

for what ever reason, I think I got a bug going, it is not showing those careers as ended (to the good or bad) but when I try to go on, it is says the Career is finished

so started up a new one, and notice my time in plane and stats are not really being kept right

(I show 30 kills, with 47 fighters and 4 recon shot down ?)

(my computer been acting up, so not sure if it is the game or computer)

right now, I not even getting awards

Hard Sarge -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/3/2010 1:58:08 PM)

one of my best missions

suppost to defend the sky, got there and seen 4 N.28s in a fight,(get 3 of them) in the middle of the fight, 3 Dolphins come in, which were the real targets (got all 3 of them also)

no combat badge, no pilot badge, no Iron Cross (2nd class, should of got that the first mission)

(oddly, shoot better with aiming help turned off, then I do with it turned on, but, i just been using it on, to try and find out where my gun site is)

Hard Sarge -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/3/2010 2:06:07 PM)

Hi Grim
(think I just read some of your posts over there ?)

overall, I think the programmers are here for the long run, and right now, I think they are stuck in the middle, do they work on the leaderboard, or do they work on single player mode, or do they work on Muli-player mode, or do they work on adding a windsock ?

they trying, but what is more importent

(for me, I think they need to work on the single player, as what works there, will then work in Muli-player, but....)

Grim.Reaper -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/3/2010 2:20:12 PM)

HardSarge,

Yep, that is me on the official forum asking a lot of newbie questions:)

Too be honest, probably the biggest gripe I have right now is the unknown factors of the game that is not published anywhere. This is certainly the case for the issues your seeing in career. Maybe it is working correctly, but maybe there is some factor in play that we have no idea about, but only the developers do.

Another couple of my own examples:

1) What type of missions even get tracked in statistics? Meaning does the fly now mode get tracked? Does the mission mode get tracked? Or does only the career mode get tracked? If it is the later, seems a little redundant since you can see career stats in your career itself. However, does seem like you can have multiple careers add up to a single profile so maybe that is why.

2) I have also heard "rumors" that with certain "aids" turned on that you can't get medals/promotions as fast. Well, that is fine but at least specifically tell us which options have these effects.

So for me, again I think the game has great potential but the developers have to share with us the details behind some of their designs. I have yet to find it in any of their documentation.

I think I will publish this post over in their feedback forum and maybe something they can consider.

JudgeDredd -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/3/2010 3:23:22 PM)

Grim

As for the planes - I can only give you my personal opinion. I like variety - it's what keeps games fresh. I saw these on sale and thought "What the hell".

This is the only World War 1 sim out there (apart from Over Flanders Fields (OFF)) and I just could not be bothered with the waiting for a disk from the US and trying to get a copy of Combat Flight Sim (CFS)3 and patched and pay postage blah, blah, blah. In other words, for me this was the only viable, immediately available option.

Because it's the only option, and I haven't played a WWI flight sim since Red Baron, I'm in it for the long haul. That means I had to get the other planes. It could well have been just as good a game with 4 planes as it will with 13...only time will tell. But I now have the variety there. It's early days...but I'm not regretting the purchase - how can I - the sim cost £12! For just 4 planes at that price it's amazing value. Add to that the atmosphere (the almost pathetic put put put of your machine guns, artillery over nomans land, seemingly nice detailed and realistic missions) and you've got a whole lot of sim for the money.

If you think like me - that you are in this for the long haul - and you expect you'll buy the planes anyway, I'd get them now. If you are (seemingly) concerned about the stability/details of it...then you may want to just take it at the vale it is with the 4 (6?) planes you've got now...but it seems to me, from what I gather, that the devs are in it for a long time...and they seem to be listening too.

At most, if you bought the other bundles (2 or is it 3? I can't remember if you said you had already bought one of the bundles), then you're out $23. If you don't and you get them later, then those 4 planes from the bundle will spring you $31?

Like I say, it really depends on what you see in the sim and whether losing $8 will hurt the bank. I knew I would get them in the future, so I laid out the cash now. I even bought the other 3 that are not in the bundles (perhaps I should've waited on those [:'(] ). At the end of the day, I knew I was going to play this for a long time and I knew I wanted variety and I knew I would buy those planes - so I saved myself a few £s and bought them right away.
