Hard Sarge -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/3/2010 3:37:04 PM)

Grim

from what I have seen, the in game stats, you get stats for Career not for fly now or missions

I not flown online, so don't know about that part of the stats

I turned most of the aids off for the 6 kill mission, ?

for me, I don't want to fly, 10-15 minutes to reach the front, I know I can land a plane, so I don't want to have to fly back to base and land again, I know I can land the plane and take off the plane, so I don't need to do it, every time

(I have turned on Auto pilot and X8 speed, once a mission was complete, and it can take up to 20 minutes to return to base and land, I don't want to)

and the training campaign, well, that is another pet preeve of mine, why do all flight sim programmers, think none of the people who are going to play there game, can't fly ?

to be honest, in online flight sims, I got well over 10,000 kills to my name, why do I need to waste time with a "here is a gun sight, you will need to try and line this sight up with the target" mission ? , why do I need to prove to the game, that I can fly from point A to point B

As for the planes - I can only give you my personal opinion. I like variety - it's what keeps games fresh. I saw these on sale and thought "What the hell".

This is the only World War 1 sim out there (apart from Over Flanders Fields (OFF)) and I just could not be bothered with the waiting for a disk from the US and trying to get a copy of Combat Flight Sim (CFS)3 and patched and pay postage blah, blah, blah. In other words, for me this was the only viable, immediately available option.

Because it's the only option, and I haven't played a WWI flight sim since Red Baron, I'm in it for the long haul. That means I had to get the other planes. It could well have been just as good a game with 4 planes as it will with 13...only time will tell. But I now have the variety there. It's early days...but I'm not regretting the purchase - how can I - the sim cost £12! For just 4 planes at that price it's amazing value. Add to that the atmosphere (the almost pathetic put put put of your machine guns, artillery over nomans land, seemingly nice detailed and realistic missions) and you've got a whole lot of sim for the money.

If you think like me - that you are in this for the long haul - and you expect you'll buy the planes anyway, I'd get them now. If you are (seemingly) concerned about the stability/details of it...then you may want to just take it at the vale it is with the 4 (6?) planes you've got now...but it seems to me, from what I gather, that the devs are in it for a long time...and they seem to be listening too.

At most, if you bought the other bundles (2 or is it 3? I can't remember if you said you had already bought one of the bundles), then you're out $23. If you don't and you get them later, then those 4 planes from the bundle will spring you $31?

Like I say, it really depends on what you see in the sim and whether losing $8 will hurt the bank. I knew I would get them in the future, so I laid out the cash now. I even bought the other 3 that are not in the bundles (perhaps I should've waited on those [:'(] ). At the end of the day, I knew I was going to play this for a long time and I knew I wanted variety and I knew I would buy those planes - so I saved myself a few £s and bought them right away.

Thanks Judge, great post and insight. I think I'll likely spring for all the bundle deals first which is only $33 for me and I can always hold off on the other single planes that aren't on sale until later date.

I want to be in it for the long haul since I love flying these types of planes and something to be said to simulate this simple planes (I know not really simple, but more simplistic then modern jets) without having to worry about all the modern stuff in today's fighters.

Thanks again!

Grim.Reaper -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/3/2010 3:52:44 PM)

Thanks Hard Sarge. All good points. Let's hope developers are listening:)

htuna -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/3/2010 3:57:53 PM)

So far.. I think this game is awesome.. I think I may grab on more Bundle (the one with the nieu 17 and Alb DIII) and maybe the Fokker DVIII single plane!

I hope they turn off the constant connection to server at some point.. Also hope they fix the short career bug... But at this point in time.. I am having a blast!!!

here's something to get us in the mood!!.. LOL I'm getting the craving to start building Models again, with a 'subject' of WWI planes!

Aurelian -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/3/2010 4:25:18 PM)

Even though I'm not happy to have to connect just to play off line, I bought it anyway. Couldn't pass up the deal.

hgilmer3 -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/3/2010 5:31:09 PM)

I just tried the Demo, but at duo 2.8 computer with 2 gig of ram, and an 8800GTS with 320mb, I'm thinking it might be better to wait and get a better computer before really trying this game.

But the graphics are top notch. I haven't seen a flight sim with graphics like this. They are scary good and if, when you are looking at the plane, everything about it wasn't so perfect, I would think I'm looking at the real thing.

Good Processor and Video Card.. you Just need a lil bump in Memory

SlickWilhelm -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/3/2010 7:28:16 PM)

I'm more impressed with RoF the more I play it. I'm to the point now where the only aid of any kind I have enabled now is "navigation icons", so that means none of the other aircraft have icons attached to them. It upped the difficulty level tremendously, especially in combat.

Personally, and this is just me...I'm not as worried about 100% accuracy in the scoring dept. My goal is to accomplish the mission objectives and get back to base alive and land my plane without ground looping(I've done that twice today [8|]). Whether or not that SE5a I was shooting at and hitting when he was struck by flak and lost a wing(that was cool!)was awarded to me(it was not)is really academic. Not every kill was awarded to WWI pilots. There usually had to be confirmation from other pilots or someone on the ground. I like getting credit for hard-earned kills, too....but it's not my priority. YMMV(right, Sarge? [;)]).

What concerns me more is whether the AI can fly the other planes correctly and effectively. From what I've seen so far, I can say that it does.

Is there more work to be done? Absolutely. I can't wait to see a fully dynamic single-player campaign, complete with medals, promotions, varying missions, etc. I want to start out as a grunt and work my way up. The original Red Baron was so good at that.

There is so much that is good and right with RoF that I can see if becoming a classic in flight simming. The atmosphere(exploding artillery rounds in the trenches and in the mud holes, throwing up geysers of water), sky, land and plane graphics are first-rate. The physics, flight model and damage model is outstanding(although there is some kevlar canvas protecting rear gunners currently).

In short, when I was flying my career missions this morning in my Fokker DR I, I felt as if I were George Peppard in "The Blue Max". High praise, indeed! [8D]

Btw guys, you might want to start thinking about adjusting the curves on your control axes inside the "response" tab. I was floundering all over in the DR I until I adjusted my rudder response and reduced it's sensitivity. Also, if you're looking for another toy to buy, I can highly recommend Track IR. Using your head to move your vision in the game turns it into a whole different world.

I guess I've always been a hard core WWI sim enthusiast, so I'm going to be with RoF for a long, long time.

Grim.Reaper -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/3/2010 7:36:45 PM)

Slick Wilhem,

Good post. Just curious, could you provide some educaiton on adjusting the curves for the joystick? I'm completely lost in how to do it. I have read messages at the official forums, but still can't understand them enough to figure it out.

Hey Grim,

I really don't understand it completely yet, either. But from reading this thread: http://riseofflight.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=5038 I've learned that the flatter the curve is, the less sensitive it is. So, when the diagonal "curve" line is closer to the middle line, the response is smaller, or moves less. But when it's farther away, near the top & bottom lines, the response is faster, or more touchy.

The best way to play around with this is while inside of a "free flight" mission where you're just flying around, not trying to kill anything. Once inside of this type of mission, use the "p" to pause the game, then right-mouse-click to bring up the controls panel.

Make any adjustment, save the profile, then exit back into the game and try it out and see what difference it made.

What really helped me make a mental breakthrough with these concepts was the picture that Seiseki made using photoshop on page 2 on the thread in the link.

Don't give up, you'll eventually get it. [:)]

Hard Sarge -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/3/2010 7:57:12 PM)

Slick

I am normally more mission based, then stat based, but, in this game, so far, mission don't mean anything, protect your supply line, okay, but, it don't matter if you protect it or not, nothing is going to happen, the mission goal, has no real meaning, plus with the short career bug, you got to do what you can do, when you got a chance :)

plus, you may misunderstand my complaints, it is not, if I get the kill or not, it is the same IL-2 AI, firing into a burning one winged plane, spinning to the ground, that the AI is firing into, and getting the kill for hitting it last

also, showing I have 30 kills, but have shot down 45 fighters and 4 recon planes, needs to be looked at (which looks like it is part of turning mods on)

I think it got a chance to be a very good sim, along the lines of what IL-2 was for WWII, but it has some issues that needs to be fixed first

JudgeDredd -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/3/2010 8:49:17 PM)

I just wanted to add a final point to this thread about this game before I depart...

I was worried about the stability, connection issues and stuttering I had heard about prior to purchase.

I have to say in all honesty (and I know I have only had it two days) that I have not had a single connection issue. I have fantastic looking graphics (even though it says I'm using 137% of my graphics memory (ie not enough!)). And the stuttering I've read about? I have had very, very slight stuttering issues...so few it's hardly worth mentioning.

And my system?

Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.33Ghz
4GB DDR2 Ram
Windows 7 64 Bit
nVidia Geforce 8800GT 512MB

The game is running with all graphics options maxed and yes, I've been in an air battle whilst protecting a convoy with a dozen aircraft aloft all dogfighting and it ran smooth as silk.

With all that said - I'm off to have another swipe. I'm not going in the Camel this time - it's a dog of a plane! I'll try a German early career.

Good luck gents [:D]

SlickWilhelm -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/3/2010 8:53:25 PM)

I totally agree with you, Sarge. Lots of work to do yet on neoqb's side.

Just got done with a "protect the balloon" mission, where by the time my flight leader got us to the balloon, we arrived just in time to watch the Nieuport 28's send it down into flaming shards. I ended up getting one of the N28's, though. I hit him good, but then lost vis on him in the chaos.

Ended up rtb alone, as most of my flight got shot down or damaged. Encountered B14's over my aerodrome, so I attacked into a V of three of them. On their gunners' first burst, I took one in the hat and had to spiral out of the formation and head for the barn.

Finally landed safely(for once), and discovered that I was awarded the kill on that N28, even though I didn't see him go down.

Boy, I tell ya. Flying with the icons disabled is really challenging, but makes a dogfight seem more realistic. When I used icons, I never worried about losing vis on an opponent. Now I have to worry constantly!

Great stuff. [:)]

Grim.Reaper -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/4/2010 12:23:03 AM)

Thanks Slick for the heads up on the joystick curves. I'll be looking at that stuff to see if I can finally comprehend it:)

htuna -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/4/2010 1:12:18 AM)

Darn.. my first Career ended.. I got killed and my ESC key wouldn't work.. so I couldn't restart... 4 kills.. one short of Acedom..

MP looks kind of empty.. any you US players want to try and get a game going some time?

Are you sure that the "Mod on" box is unchecked? If you have this box checked, it only lists multiplayer servers which have mods enabled. And currently, this number is zero, because that isn't supported yet.

Hard Sarge -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/4/2010 5:54:45 PM)

tried some of the other planes (still like the early ones)

got a Iron Cross 2nd class for this one

was in a fight with a number of Dolphins in a DVII, when some N.17's joined the party, had head on snap shot at this one, must of got lucky !

them Dolphins can be tuff, this is my first pass at this guy, look at the holes and if you can see them, the tears in the body, the other side looked worse, the dude is giving the thumbs up, saying he is okay, bullet holes all around his cockpit !

that plane was really ripped apart when he finally went down

Hard Sarge -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/4/2010 6:04:06 PM)

his next mission, knocked down a B.14 (killed the gunner, cooked the pilot, and then attacking the 2nd one, got hit, and had to break off and land, the AI stole the kill, on the flamer

so didn't even get the kill, but got a nice wound out of it

the next mission, spotted a big fight, joined in, seen a Spad drop down low, so dropped down with him, and shot his wing off, before he could do anything, flew past, then out of the blue, get the message that my plane was destroyed (?) could see no damage, but my engine wasn't working, so put the plane down in no mans land, close to where the tanks we were suppost to protect were heading, but, got Captured, oh well, a short career, but it was a clean one

so took up a DXII next, first mission, what a joy ride !

looked like I spotted two different fights going on, so joined in, but, they wern't the planes we were suppost to get !!!

got 3 N.17s, and then picked off a N.28 trying to run away, turned back and spotted some DIIIa's going after some recon birds, oh boy, I may have some help I thought, while the gunner was busy, I bore in, and shot the plane apart, then got hit by the 2nd one, and had to break off, handed the plane over to the AI, as I wanted to watch the fight with the 2nd B.14, the DIIIas ended up breaking off, but then 2 DVIIs joined in, nothing

then wondering why my plane had not landed yet, went to watch, and the bugger flew into a tree !!!!

so, got wounded, and crashed into a tree !!!!

but a good mission, got a pilot badge for my efforts

Grim.Reaper -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/4/2010 8:45:15 PM)

Hard Sarge,

Even with some of the issues you mentioned, seems like you are still enjoying which is good to see. I'm liking it, but boy I find it difficult to shoot anything. I'm envious on how many plane kills you get:)

Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I just struggle in lining up shots even if the enemy is two feet in front of me:(

JudgeDredd -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/4/2010 8:54:07 PM)

So do I Grim - managed 1 kill so far and lots of crashes. But I knew it wasn't going to be easy. I had read it's a proper simmers simulation and, if truth be told, that's the way I like em. It'll come. Practice. Practice. Practice...at least that's what I keep telling myself!

Grim.Reaper -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/4/2010 8:58:15 PM)

Thanks Judge, that is what I was thinking as well:) Sounds like your stats are similar to mine...not that I'm looking for an excuse....but I'm thinking my Joystick might be part of the problem. I'm hoping I figure out all the sensitivity stuff, maybe it will improve....ok, maybe it does sound like an excuse:)

JudgeDredd -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/4/2010 9:02:16 PM)

Nah...I'm convinced my joystick is the problem - the rudder is really very sensitive and I seem to either hold the stick wrong, or it's in the wrong place/at the wrong angle, because I seem to be forever using the rudder without wanting to.

SlickWilhelm -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/4/2010 9:20:08 PM)

I hope you boys are using rudder pedals. If not, that would be my first suggestion. Going from a twisty stick to rudder pedals might seem strange at first, but you get used to it quickly. I made the change in about 1997 and haven't looked back.

SlickWilhelm -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/4/2010 10:32:45 PM)

Btw, looks like RoF took the honors for best PC simulation game of 2009 from simHQ: http://www.simhq.com/_commentary/all_098a.html

htuna -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/4/2010 10:59:47 PM)

To me, the hardest part is the rudder.. especially take offs.. I think takeoffs are more dangerous than the NME....

My stick sucked for rudder.. so I reprogrammed two buttons on the base of the stick for the Rudder...

On the head of the stick, I programmed one button for the Blip switch... one for Padlock NME, one for padlock friend and one for back to cockpit view..

On my mouse which I moved to the left side of my stick, I use the 3 and 4 buttons to turn the mixture up and down..

I agree shooting down planes is hard for me as well.. I think I've gotten six in all my flights.. Sarge must just be a 'natural'...

Started a career with the Dr1 last night.. boy that plane is tough... first mission was a baloon busting one.. think I've tried it six times so far and haven't pulled through..

I'd really like to try Multiplayer with you guys sometime if anyone is interested!

Grim.Reaper -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/4/2010 11:40:54 PM)

I usually have a little harder time with pitch while shooting at enemies versus the rudder action, although that has caused me some issues at times. What puzzles me more is a lot of times I will have the planes lined up right in my sites and for reason I still miss.

Cmurphy, I usually only play single player games but maybe once I'm a little better we can give multi-player a try.

htuna -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/5/2010 12:03:29 AM)

One thing that bums me out is.. you make changes in the Hanger i.e. gun conversion point.. fuel load.. paint scheme.. but then the next mission it does not stick..

I think Sarge has played almost all flight simulations that have ever been made. He mentioned he had killed 10,000 planes+ in online simulation, I am thinking probably aces high.

From what I know of dogfighting in simulations and truly even real life, the ever present circles where you are just trying to catch up to the tail of the guy you are trying to shoot is one of the worst ways to try and kill. I still do it anyway. Sarge is probably an expert on all the true combat moves used by the old time pros we only read about.

Remember this for the DRI when wanting to execute a turn: Rudder first, then aileron. It's opposite of all other planes. If you apply aileron before rudder in the DrI(especially when trying to turn left), you will enter a stall.

Challerain -> RE: Was on the verge... (1/5/2010 4:07:22 AM)

Based on this thread and the half price deal I decided to make the purchase.  Then I remembered that I don't have a joystick anymore.  Go figure.  Anyone have a recommendation for a relatively inexpensive stick to get me started?  Don't want to drop too much cash if I don't end up liking the game.

Thanks!
