I originally got that connection for steam and other DD providers just so I dont have to d/l games for days. My old connection was capped at 2GB per day so it made it very hard to use DD. Reinstalling lots of games is actually easier for me from DD since I dont have to manually find all the games from shelves and patches from internet. All I have to do is click a mouse button once per game. As for the spying thing I tried to google "steam is spying on users" and I found only one discussion from 2003 and on it people say its not true: quote: Come on, get with the program guys, this is old news. Valve responded to it immidiatly after it caused an uproar on the OGC forums. It's not at all spyware, it's caused by the user using FAT32 filesystem instead of NTFS. Why the hell would Valve put in spyware anyway, everyone knows spyware sux0rs, it's not like we wouldn't notice it them putting it in. And besides, they'le be earning millions on it, imple ting spyware would just be moronic. The guy was d/l mp3s from kazaa and then falsely blaming valve for spying on him because the info was still on the FAT32 cache file when he used steam. It might be that older people prefer hardcopies but I allready have two-three shelves full of mostly pc games from the past 25 years. They take way too much space and make me look weird because noone I know is interested of such collection. The people I know steal most if not all the pc games they want so they have zero value for such collections. Once I die sombody will propably throw the hardcopy games into trash because I doubt the cds/dvds even work anymore at that point (they dont last). Also its hard to sell used pc games - nobody buys them for more than few euros. So Im not all that interested of big physical games collection. I even bought ebook readers just this fall to get rid of physical books (and to read pdf game manuals) because they are a similar problem for me. I dont want to spend expensive floor-space on shelves! Allthough I will still always buy som games physical. But only in som special cases!

I do prefer a retail copy of enhanced editions and the like...I want my bonus items in tangible form! [:)] Overall, I don't love Steam, nor do I hate it. To me, it's just another distribution outlet. I've used all of the 'big' ones...Steam, Impulse, Direct2Drive, Gamersgate, Good Old Games...all have their pluses and minuses. The one big plus they have as a group is that the competition between them has led to constant sales on a weekly basis. The only game I purchased in 2009 for full price was Batman. I bought probably 35-40 other games, and every single one of them was at least one third off, most were more than 50% off. The one argument that doesn't really make a lot of sense to me is the one that if you buy a game on Steam, you can't resell it. That argument is perfectly legit, but it's bigger than Steam. Can you resell a game purchased from any other digital outlet? Outside of using Amazon or eBay, you can't resell a retail copy of PC games anymore, either. One other thing, and this is more of a question. I notice a couple of you refuse to use Steam, and yet you seem to be fine with Impulse. This is an odd mix to me. Sure, you don't need to run games through Impulse, but you are forced to use it to download them in the first place, and to access any updates or patches. If Stardock cancels your Impulse account, you're unable to patch or update your games, or to install them again, period...same as with Steam. So why is one form of access control bad, and yet another form of access control is acceptable?

Got Fallout3 disk last year.. slight crack in the center.. got worse and worse.. eventually disk stopped working.. went on their site to see if you could get replacements.. nada... ended up having to buy another copy on ebay... If I had bought it on Steam, I would've been all set.. I have Steam on 3 PC's in my house, so I can copy to any machine if a rebuild happens...

I also have some physical copies of GamersGate and Impulse games that I saved to CD or DVD. With a bit of ingenuity it's not hard to figure out how. Direct2Drive is simple as they are like Matrix. Just a serial number and no encrypted files (unlike Steam). Impulse does not require me to ever log into them again after I install a game. Unless I reinstall Windows, then of course I have to download again. I just replaced the operating systems (XP Pro) on two of my desktops last week. I installed Impulse and they reinstalled the games I picked. Easy. If they went out of business then I would be out of about ten games when I need to reinstall or install to another PC. Same as Steam in that regard. Impulse is not as strict and sly as Steam. It just seemed like everything about Steam modeled a bad commercial. Around every corner of installing a game was some unmentioned item I would find out about soon after I paid. My main PC got some viruses from Steam in 2007 and during that ordeal I used their customer support. That was when I dropped them and decided I would never again use their service. I let the games go. I posted about it here I believe in April or May of 2007 and the thread was quite long. I don't remember all of the facts, but it soured me on them. There are many more negative reasons why I despise that company, but nobody should take my outlook as a slam to their mother here. I mean, some people really get bent out of shape if you say something negative about a game or company they like. It's like slamming a relative of theirs! I don't like seeing a slam against Matrix, but I never feel it personal like some posters do. So far I have not read any posts like that here in this thread, and I hope it doesn't change. It ruins good debates. [:)] Now in 2008 my wife bought me the Orange Box game package. After opening it up I found out it required Steam. I installed it with an open mind and I was pleased to find that I could play it without being online, after it was installed of course. That was a nice feature and it wasn't bad. However, I ended up taking it off the PC as Steam was not as unintrusive as I wanted them to be. I am glad that some gamers like Steam. I wish them the best of luck with all of their games. I also hope that they can appreciate the others that don't. [;)]

Because of the Steam sale I bought Pacific Storm Combo for $2+. Any other WitP fans got this game? Played the tutorial and impressed at the depth but dunno if the game is really that engrossing. Logistics is quite complex to the point that it counts ammo, torpedos and bombs (that you have to build). You have sailors, pilots, soldier, engineers with varying degrees of experience. Playing the single missions was fun as well.� Better WW2 PTO experience than Battlestations Midway and Pacific.

Try starting one on Microsoft, Linux v Windows, DRM or anything else that people have strong and very different opinions of and you'll always end up with a huge debate like this. The beauty of these forums is that although the discussions do sometimes get rather heated, it generally stays polite and respectful.

I am willing to change my opinion on Steam, though what would I do with all my valve games?Also, I want to play Half Life 2 Episode 3.(if it ever comes out) I would be with you guys but I love the Half Life Series.Oh, and lets not forget Counter Strike Source, the best Multiplayer FPS of all time.(IMO)

And that's fine. To be clear, I have zero problem with someone choosing not to use Steam, or any of the other digital retail platforms for that matter. I only become annoyed when it's done as it was by NefariousKoel on the first page. And incidentally Larry, I didn't post the question about Steam vs. Impulse for any other reason than I've seen A LOT of people complain about Steam for being access control to their games and presenting the scenario of being one account ban away from losing access to their purchases there...but then praising Impulse to the high heavens, which makes no sense. In no way was that meant as anything more than just a question. Anyway, overall this has actually been a pretty good conversation. In the end, it comes down to one simple thing (as everything else does), learn what you can and make up your own mind. [:)]

If there's something on Steam I would like and I can't get it anywhere else for similar or better price, Steam will get my money. At the end of the day, I just want to play games and I might have one or two issues with Steam, but generally, in the several years I've been using them, they've brought me trouble free gaming.
