I'll second the Torchlight love. Really fun little game. I normally don't love dungeon crawler RPG titles, but I've enjoyed this one quite a bit.

And Larry...actually, for 2 days of the sale you missed it at $5. [:D]

Oh man, $5! Oh well. Now that I am reevaluating Steam, I will have to keep tabs on these $5-$10 sale games. There is a bunch of them too. So far, Steam is everything good that I have read plus some. That game downloaded fast and as soon as it did, it was ready to play. Slick! [;)]

However, I had to replace XP on my main desktop today, after doing it two weeks ago. Malwarebytes was scanning for bad stuff while I was doing some email stuff and for some reason, it ruined some dll's. Beyond repair too. What a day. [:(]

Ugh. I had Avast do the same thing a month or so ago. They issued an update that was flagging all kinds of software as viral, Avast would start throwing it in the Quarantine Chest...and wouldn't let me take it back out. So in the end, my firewall, Avast itself, Ad Aware, Games for Windows Live and Thunderbird were all messed up.

Oh, and I second JD's Plants vs. Zombies recommendation. Really, really addictive tower defense style game. [:)]

Avast did that? I use that too. I have lots of issues with firewalls and virus software in comparison to the viruses themselves. Sometimes it makes me wonder if just dealing with the occasional Trojan would be more worth it. In the past I used RemoveIt and that gave me false positives every scan! It got so bad I stopped my subscription. Some mornings I spent most of my time having virscan.org scan each dll that it said was infected, and never was it correct. Even my printer driver, it kept saying it was a Trojan. If I had never had a virus or Trojan, I would think that it was a scam like Scott_War said in a post here. However, I know the truth now and I can't go back...[:(]

[;)] I know that a lot of companies are making gobs of money, banking on continuous virus output by online terrorists (another word comes to mind). Similar to Al Gore becoming a billionaire over this global warming, or global cooling now is it?! Wait, that's not a good comparison because one is a fake and the other is real. Guess which one? [:D]

Here's something funny, or ironic... in 2007 I replaced XP from a virus and trojan attack. Big time. Two days ago I replaced XP from a virus scanner gone bad. I mean it trashed some dll's beyond repair. In the end, I replaced XP and both times were just as much of a pain in the butt. One from the bad guys, one from the good guys. Go figure... [:@]

I have never replaced XP, vista or windows7 due to viruses. The main anti-virus program I have used is avast together with hardware firewall. I simply never have viruses. I guess Im lucky.

The first "anti-virus" thingie I had was on amiga. It was this on/off hardware switch that you plugged into one amiga port. It simply stopped all disk-write attempts or somthing like that.

If the switch was on and I wasnt writing a disk I knew it was a virus that was trying to do it. That enabled me to know which disks were infected. Som people I knew had 90% of their disks infected. All gone.

You simply have viruses never detected. I would wager I could come to your house (if I lived close enough) and find a virus within 5 minutes or less. Mainly because there is no one program that detects "all" of them. So, while you might have Avast it certainly doesn't mean you have no viruses. Which then presents the problem virus protection programs cause if you use more than one at a time. They can conflict with each other and also cause crashes and other problems sometimes worse than a virus itself.
I was using Avast for over a year and then Live Care told me I should install Microsoft Security Essentials because it detected some java viruses that Avast never did detect. So I uninstalled Avast and installed Microsoft Security Essentials and it found 3 java trojans and 1 keylogger trojan that Avast never showed. So it really saves to periodically uninstall your usual virus protection program and install another and run it because as I said not one of them is 100% effective.

I have tried other anti-virus programs in the past. I usually run a trial of one best AV programs I can find and if it doesnt find any viruses I can keep trusting on avast. So far that trust has not been broken. I really doubt you could find viruses from my computer!

Also I always keep my operating system updated. Instead of running old XP with full of holes, I use the latest Windows7.

NOTE:

I might use avast as my main AV but it doesnt mean that its all thanks to avast that I dont have viruses.

Yep, that's why I never install JAVA, or if I really need it, say for certain games, I just install it temporarily.

I wouldn't go that far, no need to uninstall. Most AV programs can be disabled/halted (eg. you can pause all of avast's providers/drivers), so that you can run other AV software. Key here is that you run and install "secondary" AV scanners without active shield/real-time protection, reserve that for your fav scanner.

But even avast has security issues at times, I did some research (I wanted to know what the file "aswRdr.sys" does, as I found it in the device-manager under "non-pnp drivers" [which you can see if you set the view to "show hidden devices"], I check that regularly as that's where some Viruses and DRM-drivers like SecuroROM or StarForce show up):

Killroy is right, and - in my experience, with some Viruses it's actually like only 1 out of 7 AV programs would find them. That's why I go to online-scanners (where you can upload a suspicious file and have it checked by ~ 15-20 scanners) and to trendmicro (online-scan) once in a while. Depending on (and trusting) only one scanner is a tiny bit erm... "naive", no offense. [:)]

A quick warning regarding Trendmicro though, if you use Thunderbird as Email-client: Trendmicro is able to open/check Mozilla-based (compressed) mail-databases, so if you receive a lot of spam you may actually have some viruses (viruses placed in the spam's html code or in attached/embedded pictures) or trojans without knowing it, if you don't delete the spam daily. That's also the reason why I disable images in my mail clients. Mozilla has this option, Outlook and other clients may have it too.

Anyway, if you then tell trendmicro to delete or disinfect ALL affected files (including the files/virus bits within the compressed database) you end up with a corrupted mail folder. You can still access your mails (but it takes Mozilla ages to process and decompress the mail database [takes up to 20 mins]) each time you fire up Mozilla.

If you export the mail folder to a new file, and if you delete the original file in Thunderbird's folder, you can import that file ("import mail" function) to get a proper mail database, without losing ANY data.

Thought I'd share that info :P
