They may not even realize they are doing it. [;)]

I am not sure if you are wearing glasses but I cannot see your ears. I usually am not one to judge but trolls ears are an odd fetish.

EDIT: Here is a link that addresses the problem of needing to be online to play offline Offline
I read the rules of how to properly set up playing offline, but if a gamer was in between doing these items he could be left with games that won't play. I played off line last year when I bought a game, and it worked perfect. I can see both sides though. [;)]

I have no problem with intelligent dissent. A lot of the arguments against it in this thread are based on fear, inability to understand or by people who have already adopted the model for other things and our paranoid about this one particular use.

I can see the benefits and downside of downloadable media from both sides but it does not matter. It is not going away any time soon.

Posting on a forum counting coup in front of your buddies does not change reality.

Scott_WAR -> RE: Insane Steam Holiday Sale (1/10/2010 10:50:15 PM)

It defaults to a folder within the steam folder,....and it lets you choose where to install steam, so yes they changed it.

I remember what you are talking about. It defaulted to a different folder than steam, on drive c before. You COULD change it back then,....I did it once,....but it was hard to find the option to change it,....and if you changed it AFTER you downloaded something you would have apps is two different locations,..which did cause a little bit of a mess with mods. Thankfully they changed it.

You seem to confuse the issue and the people discussing it here.

Sceptic (which means careful) people aren't fools. Then there are people who rather have had bad experiences using "new" services. With both groups, it doesn't deal with them dismissing the tech, as they're already using it (eg. DD from MatrixGames), but with Services/portals that either lack in the support department or in the convenience department (online activation/check), or with services that overdo in the "greedy"- or "A-hole"-department.

Example, I got MassEffect from D2D yesterday. BioWare put SecuroROM into the DigitalDownload version (really unnecessary) with patch 1.02, with an online check-module. It's a hassle. Also, one check should be sufficient, after I enter the serial number, but no, I have to register the number in their customer database, so that I can obtain the patch and a free expansion. And heaven knows what else is going to be transmitted during this check.
Last but not least, the patch README informs me that there have been problems removing SecuroROM from some customers' PCs, and that the drivers will be removed no matter what - even if the installation routine crashes, and even if it looks like they are still there. Um... mmmkay.
To top that, the patch readme informs me (FOR THE FIRST TIME, this is against European laws) that I can install the game on 5 unique machines only, and that I have to use the "SecuroROM revoke ability" to regain a used activation slot. Hmmm more hassle.

The game is great.... but this isn't really necessary with a DD. I'm not sure whether the retail version features that same level of unconvenience (it does have SecuroRom at least), the unpatched DD version surely doesn't have that. Whatsoever, Direct2Download DID NOT state this (online activation for a SP game and SecuroROM) on the product page.

The discussion here isn't just about "new tech", but mainly about less customer-friendly majors / services who know shyte about being honest (reg. features or the lack thereof) and being customer-friendly. Ppl's experience or (if you will) level of frustration may vary, but if you call critical/suspicious/careful people fools, just because some of their opinions may be the result of their experiences with some half-assed customer support, or other experiences, then you should look in the mirror.

Yeah my problem was really easy though,..so the first person that got my e-mail was probably able to copy and paste the answer instead of having to send it up the chain to a smarter monkey.

You know what I've spent the ENTIRE weekend playing? Plants versus Zombies. £6 from Steam and the best little addictive game I've played in a long time.

Kids love it too

Scott_WAR -> RE: Insane Steam Holiday Sale (1/10/2010 11:02:34 PM)

See thats where some of the negatives listed here are actually positives to me. I have found far too many games for other DD outlets, are just too large to burn to a single CD, and I havent invested in a DVD burner yet (about to build a new PC that will have one).

I like to be able to download my game anytime I choose,...as many times as I choose,..without having to find a CD and hope it isnt scratched or broken,...find a manual for the CD key, etc,...instead I can just download steam and get every game I have bought from them right there at my fingertips.

You dont have the activation hassles,....you just log in. You dont have to worry if you have exceeded your download limit, or time limit,...etc.

So to me, of all the DD outlets steam, is by far the easiest and most convenient to use.

But of course that is just my opinion.

You have good valid reasons to like it. I have been doing a lot of research on my own into Steam. That's why the questions here. I have read everything I could at their site, I have also read a lot on their forums. I also did some searches for complaints and read those. However, most of the complaints were from users that were clueless to computers and how they function. Like working with files.

I very much understand why a gamer would not want to store saved CD's. I have lots and I am tired of the boxes. Maybe they will get played again, maybe not. And the bargain bins are full of what I have saved for pennies on the dollar. I understand why Steam would be a welcome choice.

When Steam first came out, I boycotted it for years, and I thought it was horrible DRM. Then early last year, I decided I was fed up with buy retail copies with CDs or DVDs. Just tired of keeping them around so long. So I started paying more attention to download stores.

The thing that sucked me in with Steam is I tried a few cheap games on their weekend deals. I think I got the orange box with Half Life 2, and Portal, and more games in it for a dirt cheap price. Then I picked up Plants vs. Zombies on another weekend deal. Then this past holiday season was the first time I paid attention to Steam during a holidayseason, and I went nuts. I averaged under $4 a game that I bought. It will probably take me all of this year to play them every game I bought. I absolutely love steam at this point.

With that said, it's very much buyer beware, and you must do you due diligence as a buyer to make sure that a game will run on your box before buying. Make sure that you are happy with the patch level, and it's compatible with your OS/vid card/...

I already knew that. I prove that to myself everyday when I wake up. [:)]

I played a demo of Torchlight and found out that the purchased version had SecuRom. I liked the game but in no way was I going to install that garbage DRM. I got to checking into Steam more through their forums and also did a global search through Google about complaints. I posted some questions in their forums and decided that since XP is easy to install (if I had to), I would give them another try.

Long story short, I have been playing Torchlight offline and the entire process worked perfect. I have it installed to my F: partition which I use for games only. I also figured out how to use the firewall and virus protection along with it so I am safe, well, as safe as I can expect. I am never online with them unprotected and when I play I am not online. While playing, I also use the option in my Comodo firewall to "block all traffic." That way nothing or nobody can come through my Internet connection. I lack trust. [:D]

By the way, Torchlight is one of the best games I have ever played in the RPG-Action genre. It also plays well on my laptop which can overheat easily. Not with this game. They did it right. Great game for $20. However, it was only $10 over the holidays but I missed that deal, as I was over here arguing. [;)] [:@]
