I'm quite sure the corp hq and army hq staff are not extremely pleased with having to squat in foxholes and act as a blocking force. What do they shoot with, pencils?

"Generalleutnant, here come the Soviets again. I am out of pencils."

"Throw the typewriter, Oberleutnant." [:D]

If you only knew what the overzealous overage security platoons of any HQ are capable of... ;)

I'm also playing with D21 around turn 20 and at a similar overall position. I think the PO would need to slow down a bit, it's feeding divisions piecemeal into pocketable packages. I am all over the Crimea, close to Stalino, taken Kharkov, Brjansk, Smolensk, Rzev, Staraya Rus, and entering the inner Leningrad defences. No human opponent would allow all this.

Now that you've said that I'll bet Steve Sill is thinking of making a modification to D21 so that all the reinforcements are held back until about turn 20 when they are ALL allowed to appear at once. LOL

Kabooom![:D]
Yes the problem for Elmer is that I appeared before Moscow way too soon[:'(]

Silvanski -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (1/29/2010 9:44:58 AM)

Here are some screens at the end of my turn 19

I reached the Moscow fortified ring. Immediate south of the city one of my panzer units even penetrated the ring, but Elmer has been moving in some reinforcements. The units which raced to Taldom and Dimitrov received a pretty good beating but are still holding their positions. I hope to move behind Moscow from the south.
Further west I cleaned up resistance at Rzhev and am advancing.
The upcoming turns will be decisive. I have to get a tangible result before the mud season. Either way, even if my attempt to take Moscow in 1941 I plan to continue the campaign, how bad it may get for me.

Silvanski -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (1/29/2010 9:49:01 AM)

Further south I eliminated the Bryansk pocket and decided to push on to Orel. If things go horribly wrong near Moscow I wanna be sure to be deep enough in other sectors.

Silvanski -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (1/29/2010 9:53:25 AM)

After a few turns of probing (read "limited") attacks, I broke out of the Kiev and Chernigov bridgeheads. The most weight was put in the Kiev operation with massed artillery.
These operations will be coordinated with the Bryansk and upcoming Dniepropetrovsk (see below)operations. The ultimate aim is conquest of the entire Ukraine and a drive to the Don. Pausing at the Dniepr in the first phase of Barbarossa seems to be paying divident.

Silvanski -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (1/29/2010 9:56:48 AM)

Approaching Dniepropetrovsk, but there seems to be a substantial Soviet force defending the city and river crossings.
Romanian units are blocking the Crimean isthmus and we're racing to Nikopol and Melitopol, another phase one stop point.

Thanks for the comments guys[:)]

I think you might stall in the suburbs yet, you could have use for one or two infantry corps more to take Moskau. Could you have four transferred inf divs up front in three turns?

I cleaned up some pockets further west, so I am in the process of rushing in reinforcements.

I notice a lot of red dots on your counters...

Yes, I pushed many of my units to the limit, but that's the only way to get speedy results. I know I'm taking risks by moving so fast and leaving thin flanks... We'll soon see if it paid off.

They catapult typewriters towards the Soviet lines[:D]

And the movie from turns 15 to 19

Silvanski -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (1/31/2010 9:34:53 AM)

Here are some screenies taken during turn 20, before combat

While converging on Moscow, a substantial enemy force can be trapped at Volokolamsk
I may be able to push all the way to the canal, but doesn't this look much like Stalingrad?[sm=innocent0001.gif]

Silvanski -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (1/31/2010 9:38:00 AM)

Further south the follow-up operations after the battle of Bryansk look promising
The Soviets defending Orel find themselves caught in a substantial salient.

Silvanski -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (2/1/2010 3:50:52 AM)

The action from turns 20 to 24
My offensive is starting to stall due to exhausted units and increased Soviet opposition.

Silvanski -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (2/1/2010 4:05:59 AM)

Here's the situation from Moscow down to Orel, where I'm mopping up the last pocket.
Moscow is being defended well... I'm starting to wonder if I'm gonna be able to capture the city before the mud season... We're well into september now

Silvanski -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (2/1/2010 4:18:09 AM)

Further south the break-outs from Chernigov and Kiev went well and we are on the move there, despite stubborn opposition.
I failed to get into Dnepropetrovsk.. am gonna try to sneak some units around the city from the south where I took Zaporozhe

Silvanski -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (2/2/2010 7:42:16 AM)

The situation on 17 September 1941
I'm not fighting along the entire frontline anymore.
After the capture of Novgorod, Staraya Russa and Demyansk I'm gonna consolidate my positions on that line.

Silvanski -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (2/2/2010 7:50:17 AM)

Still no all-out assault on Moscow. I'm probing but my units yet have to recover from their whirlwind advance. Two recce units managed to get into the suburbs earning their Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds... posthumous[sm=fighting0043.gif]

Still neatly advancing beyond the Dniepr, capturing Kursk in the process
Very pleased with the outcome of the Kanev operation

And to wrap up this series of screenies, Dniepropetrovsk where after weeks of stale-mate things finally seem to be going my way

Good luck with the assault on Moscow! I lined up all the artillery and blasted my way into the center with as many panzer and panzer grenadier divisions as possible. Even with 10+ artillery batteries and fortified infantry, the Soviet's Winter Offensive successfully recaptured the center portion of the City. It was rough.

Silvanski -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (2/4/2010 4:12:36 PM)

Halfway Turn 27.
Moscow or bust!!! I commenced the assault on the Soviet capital.
Isolated the southwest portion of the defenses

At the start of turn 28... a cold front is announced

Elmer sure defends the city with some gusto
He broke the encirclement and pushed me back here and there. This ain't over yet

And here's how it looks at the start of turn 29. I destroyed the pockets and am ready to smash my way in the city center
Behind Moscow my units came under attack, so I started to abandon my positions there.
Meanwhile in the south I'm way passed Melitopol and near Voronezh

5 Oct 1941 - Turn 31

During my final combat round of turn 30 I pushed the last defenders out of Moscow's center, but my attackers were unable to enter the vacated hex.
This gave Elmer the opportunity to send in reinforcements. And on turn 31 he got to move first... [:@]
2 Pz Div is rushing in from the southwest to tackle Soviets crossing the canal north of the city.
I finally got pushed out of Taldom, to the very north of the canal.. I cosider plling back behind the canal befoe the winter
I still hope to enter the city before the mud season which is getting very close now.

Further south I captured Voronezh and Kharkov
