Silvanski -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (8/8/2010 8:46:20 AM)

Another area where I'm shortening the frontline before I get the "No retreats" order is the bulge south-east of Borisoglebsk

Turn 149 - 22 Nov 1942
Here's the more or less stabilized situation after extracting my units from the Borisoglebsk bulge

Silvanski -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (8/9/2010 5:47:47 AM)

I was driven out of Stalingrad!!! I'm not gonna try to retake it or resist too much. Extracted some units left in the western outskirts

Silvanski -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (8/9/2010 5:50:29 AM)

Here an overview from the southern sectors... I'm retreating gradually from eastern positions in an effort to prevent the front from starting to slide.
I still have to get the (self imposed) No Retreat order from Hitler and wanna be in better defensive positions before my hands get tied

And here's the latest animation, showing the repositioning near Borisoglebsk

Fungwu -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (8/9/2010 10:56:39 PM)

Any place to get this scenario?

Silvanski -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (8/10/2010 4:28:44 AM)

Steve and Rick have updated Directive 21 which will be shipped with patch 3.4. It features an additional 4th objective track for the Red Army

Silvanski -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (9/7/2010 7:39:09 AM)

Am continuing D21 in 3.4.0.178 ... New Turn Order ON, but New Supply Rules OFF cuz in this 3.2 version of the scenario it would cause the Northern Cape from being left unsupplied

EDIT!!! Under .178 Elmer was overrunning too easy... Fixed in later versions... Anyway, it helped him to cause my problems here... If I'd saved this turn I would replay it, but there ya go...[;)]

December 2, 1942... Humongous Mega Disaster!!![sm=00000028.gif]
My lines in the Borisoglebsk area were obliterated, and on top of this Elmer got the first move after the turn he broke through... Soviet Tank brigades oozed through the widening gap, are racing towards Voronezh and I have nothing in the near vicinity to secure the river crossing.
Good thing I have lots of reinforcements arriving this turn, but they are of dubious quality and have to be railed in (see next post)

Low proficiency Luftwaffe Feld Divisionen... awesome[sm=00000030.gif]

Silvanski -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (9/7/2010 7:45:56 AM)

The Soviet Voronezh offensive is not the only trouble I'm faced with.
Northwest of Stalingrad a small breakthrough sees Ruskis roaming freely behind my lines, and more's to come...
In order to save my southern front I'm gonna have to pull back behind the Don...

Silvanski -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (9/7/2010 7:49:16 AM)

Pulling back from the Caucasus is a must... I wasn't making any progress there so it would be useless to hold on to my positions there with all the trouble further north... A redeployment has been set in motion which hopefully will result in an orderly retreat without being chased

Silvanski -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (9/11/2010 5:02:28 AM)

Snippets from turn 154 - 9 December 1942

Well, these were a few nail biting turns, which saw the Soviets eventually capturing Voronezh and me re-establishing a continuous front line.
The hastily railed in Luftwaffe Feld Divisions prevented the Red Army crossing beyond Voronezh.

Soviet winter offensive shock has ended, not a moment too soon cuz we received Hitler's temporary "No Retreats Allowed" order in the news panel(the self imposed house rule)

Really nice AAR.
Isn't there a late war event that lets the German player choose if he wants panzer brigades or more replacements instead?
I wonder if this could be done with the LFDs too, so instead of getting 20 LFDs you get a bunch of extra counters holding replacements composed of infantry, flak & artillery(as in was historically first intended but Göring convinced Hitler to those LFDs) and that can be disbanded by tha player to fill up his inventory.
I think it's an interesting "What if".

There are events throughout to convert certain units. To have the option for replacements instead of the LFD's would need a huge rewrite, plus the slots for units are already maxed out

sPzAbt653 -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (9/12/2010 2:35:10 PM)

Also ... the need for more units to help cover the front outweighed the interest in the 'what if' when we considered it. Since then we've also used up all the events. Imagine using up 1,000 events!

BigDuke66 -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (9/12/2010 8:33:56 PM)

As you speak of events, the old FitE had 499, what did you do to fill up the other 500?

More withdrawing Axis units for the comings and goings between fronts, the refits for the panzer divisions, air unit change outs, Soviet formation order changes, mud events that affect various things, PO activation events and settings, things that change Axis supply throughout the campaign, events that affect what goes on up in Finland, events concerning Soviet locations on the new map, EEV settings to control the 5 objective tracks. Using them all up shouldn't affect possible future development, there are things we can redo to gain back some slots if we need to.

BigDuke66 -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (9/13/2010 3:28:27 AM)

Not sure but for what version was the last release?
The release that comes with the patch is for 3.4 so I wonder if just minor adjustments were made or if something bigger was changed.

Also how good is D21 for a PBEM match, the readme clearly states "Axis human only" & "Soviet PO only" so is it not good for a PBEM match?

Silvanski -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (9/19/2010 3:12:37 PM)

27 December 1942
Bound by a Hitler order I had to withstand the Soviet assault for 2 turns before retreats were allowed. I pulled back behind Don and Donets, and out of the Caucasus... Losing Maikop of course reversed the supply, so we'll have to do with less... Anyway, despite heavy losses I saved the bulk of the southern armies and am hopeful that I'll be able to prevent losing much more ground before the spring thaw comes.

The version with 3.4 is the latest. We plan on having a v2.0 ready for 3.5. We've got a list of stuff that Rick and I need to hammer out, but we're sure we are redoing the objective tracks to use all 5.

D21 is not designed for PBEM.

Here's the latest overview of Axis on-hand hardware

Silvanski -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (9/19/2010 8:46:15 PM)

30 December 1942
I may be nuts but this was a target of opportunity, as the Soviet offensive shock is wearing off... Dashed to Maikop and recaptured it while units still retreating from further south link up. The Romanians take up a holding zone and I also establish a second holding zone.

Silvanski -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (9/19/2010 8:49:12 PM)

Further north however, a new crisis is looming... Soviet units captured Demyansk and created a considerable gap.. I'm gonna have to rush in reserves and/or redeploy units from nearby sectors...

Silvanski -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (9/23/2010 7:44:41 PM)

After two weeks of heavy fighting we managed to contain the Red Army's offensive near Demyansk

The general situation on 13 January 1943. In the south I re-established a coherent front

Silvanski -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (9/24/2010 7:01:50 AM)

20 January 1943.
In order to survive the winter and get myself established for the '43 summer campaign, I deemed it necessary to pull back from a few bulges.
If I manage to reach the spring mud season without too much damage, and don't indulge in reckless behavior during 1943, I stand a decent chance of staying in Russia till the end...

OK here's the areas where a frontline correction is being carried out

Silvanski -> RE: Moscow or bust! D21 (9/24/2010 7:03:09 AM)

This area has become known as "The Knee"... it's where the line southeast of Moscow takes a sharp turn to run to the south...

And lastly, we're finally letting go of Maikop and the Caucasus and will dig in near the lower Kuban area
