JD, you misinterpret that one, it means ONE activation at a time. Once it's installed you cannot install it on any other machine ! Also, you can't uninstall without deactivating, usually. Once you uninstall it, you usually get a new (deactivation/"clean") code, which you can use for your next activation/machine. You install the game on all machines you plan to use, and you activate THE machine you're currently using. They just enforce such EULA more thoroughly than other games/companies. Some of these activation systems are set up in a way that there's a small "sting" indeed, means that - in case your HD fails - you can't retrieve the uninstall/deactivation key, so that you have to contact their tech support. I am not sure whether they cater for such situations or not. Some companies (eg. Battlefront) give you the possibility to receive an offline/alternative activation key.

What is this? Take Command: Gettysburg?[:D] Seriously the game looks like take command. I do agree with Judge....the activation thing would get tedious after a while. Considering I go to LA every weekend I don't want to have to do this every time I go somewhere with my laptop. EDIT: Oh nevermind. It's made by one of the same people that worked on Take Command. So this essentially IS Take Command: Gettysburg.

It means if you have a hard disk fail or forget to deactivate before removing, then you have lost you activation and have to call home. I have software with activations. 1 is downright stingy and does not cater for error or disaster. I have a couple of games that give me 3 activations. I have a couple which give me quite a few...1 is ridiculous.

[:)] I don't think it is usually a problem for the person who reformats, its a problem for the person who system crashes before they could deactivate. Although I'm sure while the developer is around they would provide a new key, but what happens if/when the developer retires or just decides to no longer support the game? No way for you to get a key. Although I do not like this limitation, in full disclosure I have bought the game because this battle interests me and I liked the past games. However, still a risk.

Norbsoftware was a developer in Mad Minute Games. They split, Norb took the code with him. But Mad Minute insists that they own it since the game's under their brand. Don't know what's the outcome of the conflict. Would appreciate if anyone fills me in.

True, there is some risk involved. I got TOW2, for example. Do I know whether Battlefront will be around in say 5 years? No. I bought the DD versions of Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2, where the latter employs an online activation. Do I know whether Bioware will be around in 5 years, especially since EA has the tendency to close down attached (smaller) studios, or to shift business away from contracting studios? No. But there's at least a chance that EA (and Bioware's auth servers) will be around for a while. With Battlefront, I've decided not to do business with them anymore, not because of their online activations and their limited download policy (10 downloads only, and I think limited to 3 years), but because of the terrible lack of content in TOW2 and the bad patch policy (they release[d] a sequel instead of patching serious defects in AI routines and weapon balancing). So, for me, it's rather about who's employing such limitations/restrictions. Btw, is this the same gettysburg game discussed in the other thread? Is this real time? Please let me know what you think about the game, I may be interested. I've ignored 1800 something games for quite a while, as I use to prefer WWII games or modern era games. Your correct that other places use some kind of activation, no argument here. Just like JD, I just think (1)activation is too little to account for the accidental system crash. I won't turn this thread into DRM specific since there are plenty of those already started:) As for the game, if you have played Take Command 2 in the past, then you'll know this game. There are supposed to be a number of changes under the hood but when you play it seems very familiar. For me, I like Civil War games so most of these are a must buy for me and I liked the TCM system plus Gettysburg is probably one of my favorite battles. So far I have only played a tutorial or two so haven't much to say how good it really is. I imagine I'll get my money's worth, although I do think it is a little over-priced. To me $34-$39 would be a better range, especially on the surface since it doesn't look significantly different. It is a realtime game which allows you to play as different levels of a commander so its kind of interesting from that perspective. There is a demo over at their site, give a look and that would be the best way to know if it is for you.

It means if you have a hard disk fail or forget to deactivate before removing, then you have lost you activation and have to call home. I have software with activations. 1 is downright stingy and does not cater for error or disaster. I have a couple of games that give me 3 activations. I have a couple which give me quite a few...1 is ridiculous. I agree with Judge.. one activation is ridiculous... I play on both a desktop and laptop and to have to go through that process every time... and the 'crash' scenario... ridiculous... With Matrix or even Steam, I install on any of my computers... This is like DRM with music.. I bought songs from Walmart years ago.. and even though it said I could play them on up to five computers. it only worked on one.. that Computer has long since been rebuilt.. so those songs are unplayable for me now... Now I only buy DRM free music on Amazon... Guess at this point and time I won't be doing the Gettysburg thing... maybe head for Midway or Flanders Field instead.. [&:] BTW my Take Command that I bought on Steam.. I don't even have to start Steam to play it.. it just works on it's own, and that's the way it came..

I will at least try to get a peek at this game. But to be honest, I have very high doubts this can match the addiction and nostalgia I have for Civil War General. Those were the days....[:(]

I tried the demo. I played TC2M to death - only had about 3 scenarios to go before I lost my saves - I think I reinstalled windows . . . The game plays just like TC2M, but with smaller buttons. I think Norb had lunch with Gary Grigsby or something ;-D The graphics are a disappointment - only marginally better than TC2m. I thought he was dropping sprites in favor of 3d models. Must have dropped that somewhere along the line. It has multiplayer with a builtin lobby system. That is going to rock. May be worth the price of admission. I noted one bug. I had Archer flanked, and started advancing on one of the regiments. They disappeared out of no where. I thought it was some kind of surrender routine, but one of my regiments was still firing. Must have been a glitch of some kind.

One important distinction from TC2M is that this has online multiplayer. Played the demo co-op with a friend against a random, and it was a blast.

Agreed....with games like Total War series being able to fully render 3D models with thousands of horses and soldiers with good performance, I think it's time to step it up. EDIT: However graphics aren't deal breaker for me....

I have taken a look at this now, and some of the previews. It just doesn't seem up to my fancy (again). I'd much rather have some decent looking sprites on a hex-grid. I don't care for 3D right now, and never have. I will probably purchase a new graphics card to handle Civ V, but at least THAT game will come with a hex grid, haha! Not that I would consider Civ a wargame by any means.

I purchased "SoW:G" this morning after playing the demo this weekend. The 2D sprites are definitely dated, but the gaming is so good that I'm willing to overlook this. At least the games has widescreen support, and you can edit a config file to bump up the AA and AF to give it a crisper look. I found the terrain to be outstanding! It's my feeling that the multiplayer aspect is going to be the best part of the game. Imagine engaging in a virtual Battle of Gettysburg, where every army, corp and brigade general is a real person! This is the true selling feature in my opinion. While I agree that the activation/deactivation DRM is annoying and inconvenient, it's not going to stop me from enjoying the heck out of this game. [8D]

Heck, JD, if my HD crashes on my gaming rig, I'm going to have bigger problems than not being able to play Gettysburg for awhile! [;)] And you can bet I've got the Gettysburg activation key and installable file on my thumb drive. Then again, I look at hardware failures as the perfect opportunity in which to upgrade! [:D]

i just purchased SOW Gettysburg and 3 expansions i suppose they are, chansellorsville, pipe creek, and antiendam (spelling sorry).. i bought the Download versions.. ok i have some issues i would love some help with. i jujst bought a new Desktop PC and it came with Windows 8. i installed SOW gettysburg first and tried it out and it was working perfectly, not even a slight possible issue. now i know this was my fault but there should be a way to fix it I hope without having to purchase everything again. i started downloading the other three and didnt realize that the games naturally were being installed to my download folder but as the SAME file.. for instance, SOW gettysburg DL'd to My GAMES/downloads/sow-gettysburg and the then asked for a desktop shorcut and SOW-Gettysburg was the name of the shortcut. all the other games DL'd under the same file name and when i ran SOW gettysburg i could no longer read the words.. pictures loked fine and the game didnt look harmed but i couldnt read any words at all. they looked like they blurred out.. i uninstalled everything that had to do with SOW from my computer after hours of troubleshooting to my best ability which drove me crazy. i empty the Recycle bin and cleaned my hands of all the mess i made.. i waited a day (today) top reinstall and properly file the DL's... i i just DL'd gettysburg and Chancellorsvile and they both r doin gthe same thing as before (words look like they were blurred out) and i installed them correctly.. what did i do? and most impotantly, how can i fix it? PLease help
